Holistic Massage School Reveals a Holistic Approach to Treating Osteoarthritis

OsteoarthritisCommonly referred to as “wear & tear” arthritis, Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that affects an estimated 27 million Americans.  The condition occurs when joint cartilage loses elasticity and deteriorates.  Without cartilage to reduce joint friction and absorb shock, one’s ligaments and tendons are over-stretched and bones may rub together causing symptoms such as pain, swelling, stiffness, bone spurs and restricted motion.

Risk factors for OA include: joint injury, over-use, obesity, and other diseases that affect joints like rheumatoid arthritis.  Early diagnosis and treatment can help stop or at least slow the progression of most forms of arthritis. There are a variety of medical treatments for arthritis.  These include medicine to reduce inflammation and pain, injections to reduce friction and improve function and sometimes, surgery to repair damage and/or optimize function of a joint.

More recently, therapies that focuses on improving a patient’s over-all emotional and psychological well-being are proving most effective in reducing pain and increasing range of motion in joints affected by arthritis.  These therapies include: physical activity to strengthen muscles; weight management to avoid over-burdening joints; stretching and massage to keep muscles flexible, and cognitive/behavioral modification such as creative visualization (imaging), creative problem solving, and relaxation techniques such as breath work, yoga, and meditation.

Healing Hands School of Holistic Health offers a variety of classes that teach effective strategies to manage the pain and symptoms of Osteoarthritis.  These include:

Somatics – a holistic practice that engages a patients thinking, emotions, commitments, visions and actions;

Therapeutic Mobilizations – a highly effective method for treating joint pain and restrictions within the joints;

Therapeutic Stretching – an advanced stretching modality that involves passive stretching and contraction of targeted muscles to optimize joint movement and diminish pain;

Tui Na (Acuppressure) – that involves stimulation of acupressure points to diminish pain and balance the energy running through injured areas of the body;

Yoga – exercises and poses, meditation techniques and breathe-work to create space between the vertebrae, within the joints, and around the internal organs to create more balance and ease in the body.

Healing Hands School of Holistic Health has been serving residents through two regional campuses located in Escondido and Laguna Hills for over 23 years.  With more than 80 Holistic Health courses and two Certification Programs to offer, HHSHH is considered a trail-blazer for Holistic Health education in Southern California.  To date, HHSHH has prepared more than 6,000 students for successful and rewarding careers in Massage Therapy and Holistic Health. Holistic Massage School Shares – Top Rules for Nutrition

Most people today know that to improve the way their body looks, feels, and performs, they need to watch what they eat as well as how much they eat.  But what exactly are the rules of good nutrition? What does one have to do to help their body achieve optimal health?  Below is a list of rules, as suggested by the faculty of Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HHSHH).

Top Rules for Nutrition

 Eat ever 3-4 hours throughout your day.

Forget about the 3 meals a day rule we learned as kids.  Today’s nutritionists suggest we eat every 2-3 hours to keep our metabolisms burning and give our bodies the fuel needed to stay mentally sharp and energized throughout your day.

Eat vegetables every time you eat.

Keeping read-to-eat veggies at your finger-tips can go a long way to helping you cut calories and maintain a healthy weight.  Try filling a Tupperware container with strips of cucumbers, carrots, celery, red/green/orange bell pepper, tomatoes, avocados, and zucchini.  Dip them in olive oil or a Hummus dips such as spicy red pepper or lemon garlic for a tasty treat!

Eat complete, lean protein every time you eat.

No exceptions! So, listen up vegetarians, because you’ll need to find non-animal sources such as beans, legumes, or tofu for every meal or snack you consume.

Avoid “simple” carbohydrates.

caution breadWhile nutritionists will encourage you to eat fruits and veggies whenever you want, simple sugars like white rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, should be kept to a minimum and eaten only after exercise, when your body can best tolerate it.   Acknowledge the relationship between heavily processed grains and heart disease, diabetes and cancer and avoid these conditions, by avoiding simple carbohydrates.

Choose healthy fats.

There are 3 types of fat – saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated.  Eating all three kinds of fat (saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated) in a healthy balance of equal parts can substantially improve your health, and may even help you lose fat. Choose saturated fats from animal products, polyunsaturated fat from mixed nuts, and fish oils, and monounsaturated fats from nuts, olives, and nut & olive oils.

Give up Sodas and other sugary drinks!

sugar drinkResearch to evaluate the link between the intake of sweet beverages (juices and nectars, sugar-sweetened soft drinks, and artificially sweetened soft drinks) and type 2 diabetes suggests that just 1 Can of soda a day ups one’s Diabetes risk by one fifth or 20%.  Avoid these risks by choosing calorie-free liquids such as Water or Green Tea.

(Research Citation: Dora Romaguera, PhD, from the School of Public Health, Imperial College London, United Kingdom, and colleagues published findings are online in Diabetologia April 24.)

Focus on whole foods.

The majority of your dietary intake should come from whole, unprocessed foods like whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Take a Diet Day Off!

If you’re able to do the hard work of sticking to the above dietary rules all week long, allow yourself a “Diet Day Off” when you allow yourself a few “special treats” to reward yourself for a job well done!

Try New Foods Regularly!

Like anything in life, the same old, same old can get pretty boring.  Don’t allow yourself to get into a food funk by incorporating a healthy new recipe into your weekly dinner mix at least twice a month.  Doing so can keep both your taste buds and need for adventure satisfied!  You can find healthy and nutritious meal recipes online at www.HealingHandsSchool.com/News/nutrition-recipes.

Holistic Massage School Discusses the Benefits of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a holistic health practice that uses essential oils and aromatic plant compounds to improve a person’s physical health and emotional/mental wellbeing.  Used by most ancient civilizations, Aromatherapy dates back at least 6000 years when ancient Egyptians used essential oils with massage to treat a wide array of common illnesses and conditions.

Essential oils are the aromatic compounds extracted from fragrant, medicinal flowers, fruits, leaves, roots, resins and barks of plants.  These plant oils are concentrated and smell much stronger than the plant from which it was derived. Believed to stimulate brain function, hundreds of essential oils are used today to positively impact one’s mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing.

Clinical studies on Aromatherapy revealed that when essential oils are inhaled, they activate the limbic system and emotional centers of the brain. When applied topically to the skin, they activate thermal receptors and destroy microbes and fungi.  Studies on various internal applications (usually in prescription form) found that they help to stimulate the immune system thereby promoting whole-body healing.  Below is a list of ten common physical and emotional complaints along with the essential oils used for their treatment.

  1. Energy and focus: Peppermint and Eucalyptus will energize you and increase attentiveness.
  2. Depression and anxiety: You can improve your mood and diminish anxiety using Chamomile, Lavender, Basil and citrus scents.
  3. Digestive problems: Fennel, Ginger, Basil, Coriander can improve the digestive process and serve as mild laxatives.
  4. Insomnia: Lavender, Geranium, Frankincense, Ylang-Ylang can help calm and relax you.
  5. Menstrual or leg/body cramps: Lavender, Chamomile and Rose Geranium are a popular trio used to relax muscles, and reduce bruises and sprains.
  6. Sore Joints: Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Clove and Cinnamon create a sensation of heat that promotes pain relief and facilitates ease of movement.
  7. Sinus Congestion: Eucalyptus can effectively decongest the sinuses and Rosemary is used to open the nasal cavities and treat any blockage or inflammation.
  8. Damaged skin: Lavender, Rosemary, and Rose Geranium destroy bacteria, viral and fungal infections thereby reducing Acne, Eczema and Psoriasis.
  9. Infections: Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Thyme, Tea Tree and Cinnamon are powerful botanical products that will kill bacteria without promoting resistance or causing negative side effects.
  10. Nervousness: Frequently used alongside massage, Lavender’s sedative and tonic effects make it a great balancer of the nervous and emotional systems of the body.

Why Do Students Choose Healing Hands School of Holistic Health?…

Focus on: An Exceptional Faculty

unnamed

“At Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HHSHH), students aren’t just educated, they are mentored”, said Founding Director, Ms. Paula Curtiss.   “Our dedicated team of professional Instructors have been carefully selected to ensure their commitment to our students’ success.  Not only are they specialist in their field, they strive to honor each student’s individuality and to empower students with the skills, information and insight needed to become one of the best in their field”, she added.

Licensed Massage Therapists for over 30 years, Paula and husband/Co-Director, Neha are credited with developing and teaching the first Massage Therapy curriculum for community colleges in SoCal.  Holistic Health Advocates at heart, they soon recognized the need for a more comprehensive Program of study for Therapists and started HHSHH in 1992 to fulfill that need.   Since then, the Curtiss’ have worked diligently to expand their curriculum from 8 to over 80 Massage and related holistic health courses offered at both Escondido and Laguna Hills campuses.

As new courses were thoughtfully added, great care was taken to find subject specialists who shared the Curtiss’s vision and interactive teaching style.  Twenty four years later, HHSHH’s Faculty has grown from 2 to over 20 highly-qualified and caring Staff Instructors plus several modality/subject specialists who contribute regularly as ‘Guest Instructors’.

Since the school’s inception, all Faculty have been encouraged to lead by example, creating a safe space for learning and demonstrating compassion, and respect to all students in the learning process. This is especially important as classes often explore delicate topics such as personal boundaries, professional ethics, client communications, mistakes Therapists make, and the importance of a Therapist’s healing intention.   Fortunately, students at HHSHH say that the insight, knowledge, experience and compassion  of HHSHH Instructors makes classes as thought-provoking and educational as they are practical and fun.

With more than 6,500 graduates working around the state, HHSHH’s Faculty has earned a reputation for producing some of the most talented Massage Therapists and Body-workers in California. Accordingly, our Graduate Placement office receives dozens more job opportunities monthly than we have Graduates to fill them.  Just as importantly, Graduates’ paper-work often reflects the student’s great appreciation for their HHSHH’s Instructors, claiming they facilitated a profound physical, personal and professional transformation that has changed their life for the better.

If you’re considering a career as a Massage Therapist and are looking for a caring and competent Faculty to prepare you for success, consider HHSHH!  From enrollment through graduation and beyond, you can count on the accomplished Faculty of HHSHH to set you on a path toward success.  To learn more, visit us online at www.HealingHandsSchool.com  or call us at (760) 746.9364 in Escondido or (949) 305.2722 in Laguna Hills to schedule a no-pressure introduction and tour today!
