Holistic Massage School Student, Austin Robles Recognized for Helping Homeless Veterans

“Austin Robles, a Massage Therapy student at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HH), was recognized for his participation in San Diego’s Stand Down Event this past July, and we couldn’t be prouder,” said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for HH.  “The letter of recognition, displayed below, was written by the Founding Owner of RESET Performance Therapy who acknowledges Austin’s exceptional contribution during the 3 day event.   It thanks him for providing therapeutic massage to more than 52 Veterans in transition and for donating 18 hours more in customer service.  We think Austin’s generous contribution of his time, skills and kindness is note-worthy and want to take this opportunity to commend him for demonstrating the traits of a true healer, – – Thank you Austin!” added Paula.

Stand Down events are modeled after a concept used during the Vietnam War.  It allowed battle-weary soldiers time away from the battle-ground to renew their health in a safe and friendly environment. There, soldiers would address personal hygiene, receive medical attention, obtain clean clothes, get a warm meal, and enjoy the camaraderie of friends. Today’s ‘Stand Down’ events offer street-weary homeless veterans a similar safe-haven.  At these events, Veterans receive assistance with VA benefits, shelter, meals, psychological and employment counseling, legal services, integrative medicine, and other services to help them get back on their feet. Holistic Massage School Awards Teacher of the Year to Shana Lipner-Grover

“We can’t select our Teacher of the Year based on student reviews, because all our teachers are held in high regard among students.  Instead, we need to look at the cumulative contribution each teacher makes and this year’s winner is no exception”, said Neha Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HH).

“When Shana first brought her Herbal Studies and Nutrition class curriculum to the school, we knew she possessed a wealth of information that could greatly benefit our students and communities. Since she began over ten years ago, we’ve watched the demand for her classes increase, and our reputation as a school of Holistic Health and not just massage – enhanced.  So it is with deep appreciation and gratitude that Paula and I award Shana our Teacher of the Year award this evening, – congratulations Shana and thank you for your dedication to Healing Hands School” he added.

Shana Lipner-Grover is a clinical herbalist, field botanist, herbal medicine maker, health educator, nature lover and self-proclaimed “forever student of life and wonder”.  Her education includes numerous field based, botanical Apprenticeships including: Columbines School of Botanical Study and Southwest School of Botanical Medicine.

A holistic health advocate with a love for teaching, Shana provides 350 hours of herbal medicine and nutrition class training to HH students at both the Escondido and Laguna Hills Campuses.  Classes Shana teaches include: Advanced Herbal Formulations, Herbal Preparations, Herbal Studies & Applications, Health & Dietary Practices and Holistic Nutrition. A unique aspect of Shana’s herbal classes includes plant walks, intended as an opportunity to identify medicinal plants and, as Shana claims: “to experience the inter-connectedness of our physiology and nature”.

When Shana’s not teaching she manages a private clinical practice, field based herbal school and a high-quality herbal product line called Sage Country Herbs. Featuring topical products that took Shana years to develop, Sage Country Herbs sells muscle relaxing and skin soothing salves and massage oils, lip balms, natural deodorants and therapeutic pain liniments.  Shana can also be sighted as a featured speaker at a variety of herbal symposiums, conferences as well as institutes of higher learning like CSULA and Bastyr University. Holistic Massage School Supports ‘Stand Down’ Event for Homeless Veterans

“The ‘Stand Down’ event for homeless veterans was modeled after the Stand Down concept used during the Vietnam War” said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HHSHH). “The Stand Down concept allowed battle-weary soldiers to get time-away from the battle-field to renew their spirit, health and overall sense of well-being in a safe retreat. There, soldiers could unwind, take care of personal hygiene, obtain clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, and enjoy the camaraderie of friends. Today’s ‘Stand Down’ events, offer street-weary homeless veterans a similar ‘safe-retreat’.  Not a hand-out, but more a hand-up, homeless Veterans are provided VA benefits, shelter, meal services, psychological counseling, legal services, integrative medicine, and employment/job counseling and other services to help them get off the streets and back on their feet.

Stand Down 2016

Healing Hands Massage Therapy student Austin Robles, seen here with co-student Nancy Taylor worked tirelessly on over 52 Veterans during the 3 day event that took place during a SoCal heat-wave!

The recent Stand Down coordinated by the San Diego Veterans Village took place from Friday, July 23, to Sunday July 25th 2016 in San Diego.  Staff Instructor, Sandra Christie, attended the event along with several volunteer Massage Therapy students from HHSHH.  Together, Instructor and students provided hundreds of therapeutic massages to Veterans during the three day event.

“According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, these Stand Down events are recognized as the most valuable outreach tool for homeless veterans in the nation”, said Paula.  “Today, I’d like to thank all Healing Hands Student volunteers for the generous donation of their time, compassion, and therapeutic touch for the homeless veterans who attended this year.  I’m sure the veterans appreciated your efforts and trust the event proved to be an enriching experience for you as well.  A special thanks to Sandra Christie, the Staff Instructor who inspired our students to participate and handled logistics for the group”, she added.

Volunteering for a Stand Down is a great way to show homeless veterans how much we appreciate their service and sacrifice.  To volunteer your Massage Therapy services for a future Stand Down event in Orange County, call HHSHH at (949) 305-2722 and ask to be added to the volunteers list.   For more information about HHSHH or the more than 80 Massage therapy and Holistic Health courses we offer, visit us online at www.HealingHandsSchool.com.

Holistic Massage School Shares Excerpts from a Healer’s Story: Part II

Daniel Pic

Guest Blog by: Daniel Lozano,

Student of Massage Therapy and Holistic Health

I never thought that I would be coming to a school to learn how to do massage and heal others. I never thought that I would be here, but I have been humbled by the experience and grateful for the opportunity to attend, study, learn and grow at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health.

Three of the most influential teachers I have met at HHSHH are Dan Martin, Shannon Gonzalez, and JR Price.  Dan was my first teacher, we met in his Circulatory Massage class. More than just a teacher, Dan has been a friend and a mentor that I have grown to respect and love. In Dan’s class we learned the foundations of massage including proper body mechanics, stance, technique and form while learning to deliver a full body Circulatory massage. I have to admit, my class had enough characters and personalities for a sociologist to have a field day, but Dan demonstrated patience that is admirable and deserving of the Teacher of the Year title he was awarded. Classmates in this first class grew into a close and tight-knit group of friends that supported one another and really encouraged each other to make it to the end.

In Energy work for Bodyworkers, taught by Shannon Gonzalez, I learned so much about myself and experienced a deep level of healing. It was in Shannon’s class that I really gained confidence in my ability to sense, and work with energy and to channel messages from the spiritual plane.  In this class I confronted two traumas that have been held in my body and, I believe, had been holding me back emotionally and spiritually. Through the techniques learned in class, we worked with one another to energetically bring to surface anything that needs to be healed and processed. When things got difficult, Shannon was there to comfort and encourage students to work through and heal any trauma or issue that presented itself.  The worked allowed me to heal from traumas experienced more than 25 years ago, powerful stuff for the brave of heart, and I am grateful beyond belief for the experience.

Another thing that I learned about massage that I had never thought about before was the concept of emotional releases. Though we touched on it in the Circulatory class, we experienced and delved into it deeper in Deep Tissue Manipulations taught by JR Price. In his class we learned that Therapists must remain mindful that muscles hold memory of trauma. When triggered or stimulated, muscles may recall those memories and it is something the client can feel physically, emotionally, mentally, energetically and spiritually. In response to this muscle memory release, some people may laugh on the table while others may cry.  Understanding it is all normal, simply how their body is choosing to release the memory of trauma whether from a sports injury, accident or an emotional injury. While taking Deep Tissue, I personally experienced an emotional release that resonated throughout my entire system. It surrounded a diagnosis that I had not come to terms with for almost 9 years.  JR’s class allowed me to finally confront my issues and find peace.

I spoke with all of my teachers, but felt most comfortable with Dan and JR who provided the male perspectives I needed. I decided to speak with them about my personal concerns, but never expected the overwhelming support and encouragement that I received. It felt great to open up to my teachers and eventually, my classmates.  As a result, I have learned to stay true to who I am and to love and respect myself first. After sharing my struggles, both Dan and JR encouraged me to continue. Supported by my new found tribe, I felt the flame within spark and knew then I would be able to make it.  Thank you Dan, Shannon & JR, for not only teaching me how to massage, but for helping me re-discover my self-worth and gain confidence as a Healer.  I am forever grateful for your mentorship, and caring support.

In Love and Gratitude,

Daniel Lozano

Instructors of Holistic Massage School Create an Educational Guide for Reflexology

“Reflexology is a form of touch therapy that stimulates predefined pressure points on the feet and hands to promote optimal health” said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HHSHH).  “The 32-hour Reflexology course we offer has been taught by Denise Fultz for over 6 years.  In the course, Denise combines lecture, demonstration and hands-on practice to educate students about “reflex zones” and “reflex points” used in Reflexology treatments. Now, thanks to the combined effort of Denise and co-faculty member Raina Colvin, our students have an accurate, easy to use Reflexology Chart they can purchase and use for quick-reference”, she added

Denise and Raina collaborated for two years to develop the images and lay-out in the chart and poster. Unique qualities of this Reflexology chart include the underlay of bones in the foot and the orientation of the hands, which appear as they would when giving a treatment. It is also designed to sit up-right for better viewing while practicing Reflexology, making it an excellent educational guide for beginners and advanced Reflexologist alike.

Reflexology chartLearning how to manipulate the “reflex points” that relate to organs, glands and other systems of the body isn’t the difficult part for students” commented Denise.  “It’s remembering the exact location that has been the challenge, and the reason we created the chart.  Our successful sales of these Reflexology Charts at HHSHH bookstores has prompted us to make them available to massage students everywhere.  Accordingly, Raina and I will be selling individual charts online at my website: www.InnerWellness.org, To purchase multiple copies please email your request to:  denisehhp@cox.net or call me at 760-594-2473”, she added.

An effective integrative therapy that goes well with any massage modality, today’s Reflexology treatments are gaining popularity as a deeply relaxing and therapeutic modality.  It is highly suggested for individuals suffering from anxiety, stress, Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, digestive disorders, Plantar Fasciitis, and many other common ailments.  By including Reflexology as a tool for their massage practice, Healing Hands’ students can positively affect their clients’ circulatory, respiratory, endocrine, immune, and neuropeptide systems of the body.

Denise Fultz is a Certified Massage Therapist, Holistic Health Practitioner, and multi-subject Staff Instructor who’s been with HHSHH for over 20 years.  A gifted massage therapist and qualified instructor, Denise currently teaches a total of 7 classes for HHSHH.  These include: Circulatory Massage, Anatomy for Bodyworkers, Tui Na, Manual Lymph Drainage, Homeopathic First Aid, Geriatric Massage, and of course, Reflexology.

Raina Colvin is a talented Fine Artist, Certified Massage Therapist, Holistic Health Practitioner and valued Instructor for HHSHH since 1997.  A multi-modality Massage Therapist and Instructor, Raina teaches both Eastern and Western massage styles for HHSHH including: Circulatory Massage, Advanced Circulatory & Sports Massage, Chair Massage, Shiatsu, and Tui Na.  When she’s not teaching or practicing on her private clients, Raina creates beautiful works of art, (primarily water-color) which can be viewed online at www.RainaColvin.com.

Holistic Massage School Shares Excerpts from a Healer’s Story

When I first enrolled at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, HHSHH in Laguna Hills, CA, I never thought that I would learn as much as I have. People have said that the road to becoming a Healer is a process that requires a profound personal experience or deep healing to occur on multiple levels, to open you up as a channel for healing yourself and others. I agree, and believe it is a very empowering process. Through hands on work, a clinical and holistic perspective of things and a challenging learning environment, you end up understanding much more about yourself than you ever thought possible.

I have always been a very spiritually inclined individual who was very mature for his age, highly sensitive and intuitive. If my mother asked for help, or if someone was sick or in pain, I always tried to give them the same unconditional love and healing that my mother would give me when I was sick. I’ve always known healing is what I am supposed to do with my life. I feel that it is a part of who I am and who I am destined to be. It is in my blood by birth, in ancestry through Native American roots, and in my Spirit as part of my essence. I am here to serve as a Healer.

Because I am more spiritually and energetically inclined, I chose elective classes that were more geared toward my style of healing. In addition to the basics: Circulatory, Advanced Circulatory and Sports Massage, Deep Tissue and Anatomy for Body-workers, I have taken Reiki I & II, Chakra Balancing, Spiritual Healing, Kundalini Yoga, Energy work for Body workers, Lymph Drainage, Therapeutic Stretching as well as many others.  While I learned something from every class, in Energy work for Bodyworkers, I learned a great deal about myself and experienced a deep level of healing. It was a turning point that allowed me to really gain confidence in my ability to sense, and work with energy.

After graduation, I plan to return to university to finish my Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, and open my own Wellness Center where I can provide services that can address and fit my clients’ needs in a truly holistic approach. These may include: Spiritual Counseling, Life Coaching, Clairvoyant Reading or Healings, Massage or Energy work.  All services I hope to provide will honor clients as a clear and open channel for divine love and healing.

At HHSHH, both the teachers and staff are highly encouraging, supportive and work hard to get you into the school and through graduation and beyond. Throughout your education you will find yourself supported by not only your teacher and staff, but by the many amazing and beautiful souls that you will meet in the classroom. I have met several classmates who became friends and will now be in my life forever.  Through my educational experience I have not only learned about various ways to heal physically, I have also learned how to be a better man, son, brother, lover and one day, a father. I am confident that with my education, passion and faith, my dreams will come true. Thank you Healing Hands for starting me off on this journey of wellness, holistic living and healing.

In Love and Gratitude,

Daniel Lozano
