Massage Therapy School Encourages Student Application for Federal Student Aid

“Whether you are interested in attending a 100 hour Circulatory Massage Course, a 500 Hour Massage Therapy Program, or a 1000 hour Holistic Health Practitioner Program, Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HH), can assist you in finding the very best financial solution for your educational needs” said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for HH.  “As of October 1st, 2016, students became able to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2017-18 school year three months earlier than usual, and the process has been simplified. Now students have the convenience of using prior-prior year tax data so they can get college applications in before the start of the winter term in January”, she continued.

Completing a FAFSA is a student’s first step to getting federal money for education which includes subsidized and unsubsidized student loans, plus Pell Grants (Pell Grants do not require pay back).  The information on a FAFSA is also used by colleges, state governments and others to determine if the student qualifies for other types of financial aid or scholarships.  These may include but are not limited to: the Workplace Investment Opportunity Act (WIOA) Educational Funds, VA Benefits, Post 911 Veterans Benefits & Training, and Employment Development Department (EDD) Education & Training benefits.

For students interested in a career in Massage Therapy or as a Holistic Health Practitioner, HH is one of the few schools that is Nationally Accredited, State Approved (by CAMTC) and qualified to receive all forms of financial aid on behalf of students. For those who don’t qualify, or are awarded only partial benefits, HH offers in-house financing plans making a career as a Massage Therapist attainable to all who desire it, one of the school’s founding visions.

In the past, filing for financial aid involved researching your family’s tax returns and documents to complete a lengthy 10-page work-book.  Today, application is far less complicated as the on-line form is automatically filled using IRS data, cutting the filing process down to an average of 20 minutes.  Finding out if you qualify for financial aid is as easy as 1-2-3:

  1. Go online to:
  2. Click on: “Start a New FAFSA”
  3. Complete the online form

After filing, you will be sent a report on your eligibility for the Pell Grand and the amount you can expect to receive. Note:  If you are seeking a loan, fill out a Federal Direct Loan application along with your FAFSA at

According to the education advising site:, nearly two million students who would have qualified for the Pell grant in the 2011-12 never applied, assuming they wouldn’t qualify.  Don’t let that happen to you!  Call HH to speak with a Financial Aid Advisor who will be happy to walk you through the process and address your individual concerns. Open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5:30 pm, call our Admissions Offices at 949-305-2722 for HH – Laguna Hills or (760) 746-9364 for HH – Escondido.

Holistic Massage School Talks Tax Deductions for Massage Therapists

With Tax Deadlines just around the corner, students at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health are asking, “If I open my own practice, what can I deduct as a legal business expense?”  In response we quote information posted at the IRS at, that identifies two criteria which deem expenses valid; they must be ‘ordinary’ and ‘necessary’.

An ‘ordinary’ business expense is defined as one commonly accepted in your trade. A ‘necessary’ expense is considered any expense helpful and appropriate for your trade. The IRS adds, “an expense does not have to be indispensable to be considered necessary”.  So, while legitimate expenses may vary from profession to profession, a valid business expense for Massage Therapists is basically anything one spends money on to run your practice.

Healing Hands Instructors suggest that students keep track of any expenses they incur after beginning a business that they had not incurred previously.  A few specific expenses include:

Supplies – face cradle covers, sheets, blankets, hand and face towels, holsters, massage oils, lotions, gels, boxed tissues, hand sanitizer, aromatherapies, candles, hot stones, complementary holistic products, cleaning supplies/sanitizers

Equipment – massage tables, table-warmers, table-covers, massage chairs, floor mast (Shiatsu / Thai massage), massage room fans, fresh water dispenser, CD player, CD’s and Theracane (MT self-care)

Accessories – body bolsters, breast pillows, pregnancy wedges, arm supports, side-tables and chairs

Laundry expenses– laundry service fees (for sheets), detergent, bleach, dryer sheets, washer/dryer for towels, blankets used for massage are all deductible expenses

Utilities – Some utilities like cellphones and electricity are often used for both personal and professional use.  Massage Therapists are urged to estimate the percentage of time an item is used for business, versus personal use use that sum to calculate percentage of cost, which you’ll use as a valid business expense.

Car Expenses – The IRS allows you to deduct auto expenses based on either actual car expenses or a standard mileage rate, currently at 53.5 cents per mile.  Be warned, however, that you can’t buy a car and deduct the purchase cost unless you take aggressive steps to make it an asset of your company.  Even as such, you’ll still need to keep track of your business versus personal use expenses.  Massage Therapists and Holistic Health Practitioners can search google for smart phone applications designed for this purpose specifically.  One such app is as MileIQ.

Healing Hands School of Holistic Health

“Touching Lives – Touching Hearts”

Holistic Massage School Now Enrolling for CranioSacral Therapy

“Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a holistic (whole person) approach to healing that recognizes the inter-connectedness of our minds, bodies and spirits” said Harmony Curtiss, Operations Manager for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health – Laguna Hills.   “It has proven to be an effective treatment for a wide range of illnesses as it encourages the body’s free flow of energy, promotes vitality and facilitates a greater sense of well-being.  Classes start on April 11th so I’m reminding all interested students to register by March 28th to ensure your spot this Spring.” she added.

For more than 35 years, thousands of practitioners world-wide have demonstrated Craniosacral Therapy’s effectiveness, and its practice has evolved into a highly respected form of integrative therapy. Clinical applications include a wide-range of musculoskeletal, developmental, and neurological issues, as well as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorders. Additional conditions that benefit from craniosacral therapy include: headaches and migraines, chronic neck and back pain, central nervous system disorders, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, stress and tension-related problems, connective tissue disorders, neurovascular disorders and many more!

This Spring, HH’s 32-hour Craniosacral Therapy I course will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 5pm starting April 11th and ending on April 20th.  Students will learn how to use traditional techniques to facilitate a comfortable realignment of the soft tissue surrounding the cranial-sacral mechanism.  Students are given opportunity to develop their perception skills so they can tune in to the natural rhythms of the cerebrospinal fluid. By understanding how cerebrospinal fluid protects the brain and spinal cord, and its role in the nervous system, students can help restore natural balance for their clients and help them to re-boot of their  innate healing powers.

Craniosacral Therapy can be used as a stand-alone therapy or in conjunction with other massage and body-work modalities.  It is safe for use on all age groups including infants, children and the elderly.  Although soft and gentle in its application, the effects of Craniosacral Therapy on the mind and body are reported to be deep and profound.

In a typical treatment, the client lies on his or her back while the Therapist uses a gentle touch, usually no greater than 5 grams of pressure to induce relaxation.  Therapists also gently move joints including the cranial sutures which span the top of the head and accommodate subtle changes in intracranial pressure. Craniosacral therapists are taught to maintain a neutral presence and intention when practicing this therapy in order to foster self-healing.

Healing Hands School of Holistic Health

“Touching Lives – Touching Hearts”

Holistic Health Pioneer, Seymour Koblin Endorses Healing Hands School of Holistic Health

Seymour Koblin

Seymour Koblin

As 30 year veteran of San Diego’s Holistic Health and massage world, many people ask Seymour Koblin about the Holistic Health and Massage Therapy School scene in San Diego. Below is Seymour’s answer:

“In 1989 I began a Holistic Health and Massage school called School of Healing Arts in Pacific Beach/ San Diego California. We were one of 5 Holistic Schools including IPSB, Mueller College, Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and Body Mind College. A few years later, Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, and two other schools opened in North County. All of these schools were created by Holistic Health conscious individuals who had years of experience in the Holistic Health field.

Fast forward to 2017, all of these, with the exception of Pacific College and Healing Hands, have closed down. The challenge of creating a balanced Holistic Health School with increasing regulations and standards dictated by Accrediting agencies, Federal Funding and other financing agencies were more than many of these schools could manage.

The common concern from the original schools was the difficulty of offering creative, heart-centered education while following the increased regulations. I am so happy to say that Healing Hands School of Holistic Health has met that challenge and is even adding a new campus in San Diego.  I believe Healing Hands captures the heart of Holistic Healing mostly because it is run by a Husband/Wife team, Paula and Neha Curtiss, long-time Holistic Health Practitioners who both administer and teach many of the classes. Their vision of Holistic Health and Massage prioritizes creativity, highly skilled technique that includes compassion as well as all the technical skills necessary for passing all State and National Exams. Healing Hands is Nationally Accredited, offers federal loans, WIA and VA benefits (to students who qualify), to help pay for their tuition.

When asked, what school should I go to for certification in San Diego, I can with complete confidence and long sought after relief provide an answer that honors my integrity. Healing Hands School of Holistic Health offers the Certification training necessary for Massage Therapists and Holistic Health Practitioners to create long lasting, rewarding and lucrative careers in the fulfilling field of Holistic Health and Massage. The quality work they have been teaching for so many years combined with an administrative team that operates with compassionate, and heart – centered business practices provides a foundation that students will carry into their successful practices. I recommend before you sign up anywhere, visit the schools in person. I’m pretty sure you will feel the same difference I and so many other students do at Healing Hands.”     – Seymour Koblin

Seymour Koblin is now offering continuing education classes and holistic health programs in various countries around the globe.  For more information write to

Holistic Massage School Shares Natural Ways to Reach Your Personal Potential

Practice Positivity!

Nothing is more important than your ability to be a positive with your Self. When you are positive, in word, thought and deed, you will begin to feel that while you’re not perfect, you ARE on the right track.   This self-assurance goes a long way toward calming nerves and reducing anxiety, while boosting confidence and one’s sense of happiness. This doesn’t mean that you should stop calling yourself out on negative behavior or performance, but it does mean that you should focus on the good in your life first and foremost. In fact, if you practice positivity in your words, attitude and all aspects of your life, you can be sure you will begin experiencing dramatic improvements.

Take Time for Creative Self Expression!

Getting in touch with one’s creative side and not being afraid to think outside of the box, or color outside of the lines, can help you develop critical thinking and enhance your life in exciting ways. Try putting aside an hour a day to really embrace unrestrained creativity. Don’t limit yourself to projects or goals, simply take time to do or create something artistic and embrace the joy of child’s play.

Read, Read, and Read Some More!

Teachers agree that incorporating reading time into your daily routine is a great way to better yourself at any age. Reading is not only educational, it gets the creative juices flowing, expands your vocabulary, sparks your imagination, and creates a yearning to learn even more.

Move beyond your Comfort Zone!

While creating a comfort zone for ourselves is healthy, stepping out of our comfort zone on occasion can also be.  Especially when it’s time to transition, grow, or transform!  If one remains wrapped up in a safe little cocoon all their life, they can miss out on the joy of establishing new friendships, the lessons learned through new experiences, and the confidence and personal growth that comes from meeting challenges.

Allow Yourself to Fail, Then Get Back Up!

During the process of reaching your maximum potential – you may experience failure and/or embarrassment several times before you get there. Give yourself permission to try, and fail, and even embarrass yourself. Once you realize that ‘winning’ isn’t everything or that ‘losing’ or being ‘embarrassed’ won’t kill you, you’ll be better equipped to deal with whatever life hands you in the future. Then, if /when you fail, you’ll recognize it as an opportunity to demonstrate self-love…and get right back up!

Holistic Massage School on Why Students Choose a Career in Massage Therapy

At Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, we’re always asking prospective students three questions.  Are you interested in health and wellness?  Do you need to achieve financial independence, fast? Are you seeking a flexible career that you can take anywhere?   If they answer yes to any or all of these questions is yes, we invite them to consider the career of Professional Massage Therapist.

At Healing Hands School, our curriculum offers two Certification Programs and over 80 Massage and Holistic Health courses.  Students may enroll in the 500-hour Massage Therapy Program, or the 1000-hour Holistic health Practitioner Program.  Both programs prepare students to become State Certified as Professional Massage Therapists.  Take a look below at a few comments Healing Hands students’ gave for why they choose a career in Massage Therapy.  (Names are withheld to protect students’ privacy.)

“For me, school meant a financial commitment.  The cost for tuition at Healing Hands School is only a fraction (1/10) of the cost of a traditional 4 year education which averages close to $130,000.  Rather than become saddled with unmanageable debt for an uncertain professional future, Healing Hands School prepared me for an in-demand career in less than 1 year!”

“I wanted flexibility and a part time career since I’m a Mom.  Massage Therapists can pick their hours, and their days; an advantage for our family as my husband’s schedule is constantly changing.  The flexibility this career allows, gives me the best of both worlds, my own career and a family!”

“Healing Hands’ Job-placement Department texted me several job opportunities each week, even before I graduated.  After 25 years, the school’s reputation has attracted the best Massage Therapy Employers.  I received multiple employment offers just as soon as I started looking, and I’ve been gainfully employed ever since”

“I’ve always been interested in Sports and body-building activities.  As a personal trainer, I had already established a clientele of sports enthusiasts who would benefit from regular massage.  Choosing Massage Therapy as a complementary profession made perfect sense, and has allowed me to substantially increase my monthly income”

“As a Massage Therapist, I work one on one with clients in a quiet, relaxing and therapeutic environment.  I find this to be a very welcome relief from the loud, busy, and competitive corporate environment in which I had previously worked” –

“Becoming a Massage Therapist empowered me to increase my income. Straight out of school I was earning $25 -$35 an hour with tips at a massage clinic.  Today, I also receive $65 to $75 from private clients I visit at their homes.  By combining these two revenue streams, I can increase my income incrementally, without the risk of going it alone from the start”.

“Pursuing a career in Massage Therapy allowed me to focus on an area of specialty that fit my personal interests, Movement Arts and Sports.  By tailoring my education to Sports related therapies, I am able to use deep-tissue, neuro-muscular, and myo-facial therapies to affect substantial positive change for my clients.”

“Working as a Massage Therapist allows me to help others heal and feel better right away.  That gives me instant satisfaction; knowing I’ve made a positive, therapeutic impact, fulfills my sense of purpose.”

Holistic Massage School Offers Advanced Classes in Therapeutic Stretching

“New research on the physiological effects of stretching now support what Athletes and Massage Therapists have known for decades; stretching helps to promote body awareness, blood flow, flexibility, range of motion and performance,” said J.R. Price, Staff Instructor for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HHSHH).  “The school’s 58-hour, Therapeutic Stretching course allows me to lead students through a safe and proven protocol for stretching all muscle groups of the body to facilitate maximum performance for themselves and their clients” he added.

Through lecture, demonstration and hands-on practice J.R. teaches students about a variety of stretching techniques with focus on an advanced modality called Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation or (PNF).  PNF’s goal is to increase flexibility, enhance ease of movement, improve range of motion and facilitate balance in the musculoskeletal body.  Special attention is given to body-mechanics (movement & support) when facilitating the stretches as well as optimal breathing techniques and client-therapist communication.  An integral part of any holistic wellness program, PNF stretching has been shown to greatly enhance athletic performance.  With so many sports enthusiasts and competitive athletes seeking massage regularly, therapeutic stretching is a MUST-HAVE modality for today’s Massage Therapist.

Ideally, a PNF session begins with the Massage Therapist warming the targeted muscle group with techniques and manipulations to increase blood flow, lubricate joints, and oxygenate muscles and nerves.  Once warmed, the Massage Therapist then directs the client through a series of facilitated stretches in which the client is alternately actively and passively participating.  The breath-work involved lends a relaxing and meditative aspect to the bodywork, yet each move requires focus and effort on the part of the recipient and facilitator. Care is taken to stretch areas without causing pain and identify muscles that are weak and in need of strengthening.

J.R. is a Certified Massage Therapist, Holistic Health Practitioner, and Staff Instructor working with HHSHH since 2006.  A specialist in Myofascial Therapies and Deep Tissue Manipulations, J.R. worked alongside a Chiropractor where he witnessed the healing capacity of the human body and the effectiveness of therapeutic bodywork on a daily basis.  Having gained a deep respect for physiology and the body/mind connection, J.R. investigates the core cause of the dysfunction in the body rather than just address symptoms.  As a result, he enjoys a successful bodywork practice that focuses on injury rehabilitation and chronic pain.

Voted “Teacher of the Year” in 2009, JR is held in the highest-regard among HHSHH Staff and Faculty.  Students who’ve had the pleasure of attending one of J.R.’s classes say he takes great pride in creating a sacred space for learning.  Leading by example, they say he inspires a sense of safety, always treating others with respect, kindness, honesty, while encouraging open communication.  Students attribute J.R.’s teachings to taking their massage practice to new heights allowing them to facilitate “serious change” for their clients.

Healing Hands School of Holistic Health has been serving residents in Escondido and Laguna Hills for over 24 years.  To date, HHSHH has prepared more than 6,500 students for successful and rewarding careers in Massage Therapy and Holistic Health. To find out more about  J.R.’s upcoming classes of: Deep Tissue Manipulations, Advanced Circulatory & Sports Massage, Therapeutic Stretching or any of the other 80+ classes offered at HHSHH, please visit us at or call us at (949) 305-2722 in Laguna Hills or (760) 746-9364 in Escondido.
