Holistic Massage School Honors All US Military Families This Memorial Day

“Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for the brave men and women who died while in service to our country”, said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HH).  “On behalf of HH’s Faculty and our Community of Healers, I want to say thank you to all military personnel, deceased and living.  As we remember those who died with great appreciation for protecting our freedoms, we must also acknowledge those still living, your service and sacrifice will not be forgotten!”

Traditional observances of Memorial Day include Memorial Day Parades, visits to Cemeteries and Veterans’ Memorials, and the placing of flags and flowers on the graves of fallen heroes.  Federal and US Military Installations also practice Memorial Day flag etiquette, as a way of honoring the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.  On Memorial Day, it is customary for our flag to be hoisted to the top of the staff and then slowly lowered to the half-staff position.  At noon, the flag is raised to full-staff position representing our vow to rise up and continue the fight for liberty, ensuring their death was not in vain.

Memorial Day serves as a reminder to us that we are the land of the free, because of the brave. Accordingly, we need to acknowledge that the US Military Family faces many new challenges following discharge from military duty.  Among these is the dramatic transition from a military service job to a career in the civilian work force. As education is essential for a career, both in and out of uniform, it’s important for Vets to use their education benefits wisely.

For Veterans interested in a career as a Professional Massage Therapist or Holistic Health Practitioner, HH has good news!  Approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education, to process Veterans Benefits including Title IX and Post 9/11, chapter 30, 31, 33, and 35, HH can help Veterans prepare for a new career in less than a year!  All that’s needed is for the Veteran/applicant to submit a Certificate of Eligibility when enrolling at HH. Massage Therapy School Honors All Veterans this Memorial Day

Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HH) says: “On behalf of the HH Faculty and Community of Healers, we wish to acknowledge and honor all our military personnel, past, present and fallen, this Memorial Day…..  Thank you for defending our country and ensuring our freedom, your service and sacrifice will not be forgotten!”

HH Faculty and students are no strangers to Veterans and members of Military families.  In fact, HH has been involved with Wounded Warrior Programs, Stand Down Events, and other Military support initiatives since it was founded in 1992.  Owners, Paula and Neha Curtiss believe that every service member, Veteran or member of a military family who desires an education in the Healing Arts should be able to pursue one.  Toward that end, they sought approval by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education to process Veterans Benefits (Title IX and Post 9/11, chapter 30, 31, 33, and 35).

HH approval to accept VA and Government funding, opened the door for Military family members to enroll in HH’s 500-hour Massage Therapist Program, or the 1000-hour Holistic Health Practitioner Program.  Since then, dozens of US Veterans have graduated from HH and successfully re-integrated to the civilian work-force with a job they love.

As a professional Massage Therapist, Veterans can help to fulfill a growing demand for therapeutic massage in our communities.  In addition to flexible schedules, a variety of work environments, and a starting salary of $25 – $45 an hour, they will enjoy the satisfaction of helping others feel their best through the healing power of touch.

HH’s culture promotes a heart-centered approach to Holistic Health Education, preparing Healers and not just Practitioners. All courses are delivered by top-notch Instructors who are specialists in their subjects.  HH offers day-time, evening and weekend classes to accommodate busy schedules, and students may attend year-round.  With a curriculum that offers more than 80 massage and holistic health courses, HH is well-equipped to proudly serve those who have Served our country.

Holistic Massage School Asks Which Meditation Technique is Best for You? (Part 1)

According to Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HH): Meditation techniques gives our minds a single focus that allows us to slow racing thoughts and lull it into a calm, healing-receptive state.  The three types of meditation techniques described below, are proven to be conducive to health and healing when used regularly.

Though there are literally hundreds of meditation techniques, this blog-series will focus on a few popular techniques for the beginning Meditator. To find out which technique is best for you, consider trying each for a full week.  Make note of how you feel before and after each meditation session as well as the duration of each practice.  At the end of your trial, review your notes to determine which type of meditation was your ‘Best Fit’.  By choosing a meditation technique you enjoy, you’ll be more motivated to practice and include it as an essential part of your holistic wellness plan. Which meditation style resonates with you?  Read on to learn about Mantra meditation…and check back weekly to learn more.

Mantra Meditation

Ideal for individuals who learn best by speaking or listening to lessons, a Mantra Meditation involves the silent repetition of a sound such as “Om”, or a letter, word or phrase.  Traditional Mantras are believed to possess an energetic quality conducive to quieting the mind and were held in secrecy, handed down from teacher to student only.  A Mantra meditation can also be unspoken, with focus on the sound of your breath, which is always available to you.  The intention of Mantra Meditation is to help clear the mind, let-go worries and allow your body/mind to deeply relax.  The practice of Mantra meditation, whether spoken or not, will naturally focus your attention inward, slow your breathing, and help you calm tumultuous or worrisome thoughts and emotions.

Credited with developing and teaching the first Massage Therapy Training Programs for community colleges within the state of California, Paula and husband, Neha, opened HH in 1992 and have maintained a leading-edge curriculum ever since.  Most of HH’s classes touch on the physical (exercise, nutrition) as well as mental (emotions, expectations) and spiritual (meditation, self-nurturing) components of Holistic Health. The goal of all classes is to empower students with knowledge to create immediate, cumulative and profound health benefits.  Classes are offered during the day, evenings or on weekends to accommodate almost any schedule. Although HH offers two Nationally Accredited Programs, Massage Therapy and Holistic Health Practitioner, classes can also be taken a-la-carte.

At HH, Mom will learn about simple yet powerful holistic practices she can adopt to increase her body’s energy, strength, flexibility and overall health.  She’ll learn about the body’s most common problem areas, and the role her posture and exercises play in relieving pain and increasing flexibility in these areas.  HH also offers proven Mind/Body classes and strategies to help Mom reduce stress and promote deep relaxation.  Best of all, she’ll learn how to deliver a full-body Circulatory Massage, a skill that can be used to nurture, comfort and heal her loved ones for many years to come!

Holistic Massage School Appoints New Instructor for Advanced Circulatory and Sports Massage

Christopher Morgan demonstrated an exceptional understanding of Anatomy and Physiology right from the start of his educational Program” said, Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HH).  “In addition to mastering a variety of massage modalities and techniques, Chris possesses strong leadership abilities, making him an asset to our school and a blessing to our Students.  Please join me in recognizing Chris as the newest member of the HH Faculty”, she continued.

Christopher (Chris) Morgan is a Certified Massage Therapist and Holistic Health Practitioner whose focus is clinical sports massage therapies and soft tissue injury rehabilitation.  A Los Angeles native, Chris is naturally athletic and enjoys practicing a variety of the ‘Flow’ or Movement Arts (Fire-spinning, Prop Manipulation, Acrobatics). Prior to pursuing an education in Massage Therapy, Chris served as a Customer Support Analyst and Professional Corporate Trainer. He became interested in Massage Therapy as it offers a combination of physical, mental and energetic work that enables him to help others.

As a Massage Therapist Chris uses strong communication and analytical skills to establish client rapport, discern the cause of his client’s pain, and customize a treatment plan.  As the Instructor for HH’s 100-hour Advanced Circulatory and Sports Class, Chris takes great pride in teaching his students to facilitate that same kind of therapeutic healing.

Enthusiastically recommended for the Staff Instructor Program, Chris completed training months after graduation and began teaching in October of 2016.   Though Chris’s class was previously taught by seasoned Instructors JR Price and Raina Colvin, his students enjoyed a 100% pass rate, attesting to Chris’s conscientious and competent nature.

In Chris’s classes, as with his clients, he initiates an educational conversation, rather than lecture. He listens and observes closely before employing knowledge, experience, patience and skill to achieve results.   By teaching students the skills to assess clients and the techniques to customize their bodywork, Chris hopes to raise awareness of Therapeutic Massage as essential to any wellness plan. Going forward, Chris intends to teach body movement (body mechanics) training to Massage Therapists.  He also looks forward to establishing a private practice and incorporating life-coaching into his service offerings.

Chris is proficient in several Eastern and Western massage modalities.  These include: Swedish (Circulatory), Deep Tissue, Sports Massage, Neuromuscular, Structural Integration, Lymphatic Drainage, Tui Na (Acupressure), and Thai Foot Massage.  Chris maximizes his practice by combining the best of bodywork manipulations and neuromuscular therapies with structural integration and stretching exercises.  His passion and dedication translate to an excellent quality of care for his clients and an exceptional role model for aspiring Massage Therapists.

Holistic Massage School Offers Spring-time Course in Lomi Lomi (Hawaiian) Bodywork

Lomi Lomi is a highly spiritual form of body work that originated thousands of years ago in Polynesia, before being brought to Hawaii.” said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health.  “While many forms are passed down from generation to generation, Lomi Ka Ala Hoku, the form taught at Healing Hands, was created by Master Healers (Kahunas) as a ‘Rite of Passage’ ceremony,” she added.

The intention of Lomi Lomi is to help clear the recipient’s Spirit of unresolved issues and help them gain clarity about their their life-path”, said Jennifer Peterson, Staff Instructor. “The Lomi Lomi practitioner’s job is to facilitate a state of Pono Pono for the recipient; that means conflict free and aligned with the Divine,” she added.

Lomi Lomi is based on a Martial Art form called ‘Lua’, and often is often described as a moving meditation for the practitioner. Ideally the bodywork is performed in a harmonious, “sacred” environment accompanied by traditional Hawaiian music. The massage begins with a prayer for the recipient.  Then, a hands-on body scan is performed to locate areas of tension before initiating passive joint movement to relax, and warm up the body.  A pure coconut oil or an aromatherapy/oil blend is applied as the practitioner ‘dances’ around the table applying smooth, rhythmic, strokes.

Lomi Lomi practitioners use hands, fingers and forearms to execute the massage. Although the modality has a limited number of strokes, each massage is creatively customized for its recipient. While some report feeling a deep sense of calm following their massage, others describe it as emotionally profound.  Most, however, do report that the experience opened their hearts, and left them feeling especially loving and connected to themselves and others.

In the Lomi Ka Ala Hoku course offered this Spring (starting June 2nd), Jennifer teaches the traditional, full-body Lomi Lomi massage as well as advanced strokes and techniques. Students practice ‘pule’ or pray-full intention, and are encouraged to find a place of acceptance of their clients’ uniqueness and place upon their life’s journey.  Jennifer teaches that it is the practitioner’s un-conditional acceptance of their client that creates a sacred space for healing where the greatest change occurs.

In addition to Lomi Lomi, Jennifer teaches a series three Ayurvedic massage therapies for Healing Hands, namely THE VISHESH; UDVARTANA; and ABHYANGA.  An exceptional practitioner and caring individual, Jennifer has earned the distinction of Lead Therapist for the Spa at the Grand Del Mar Resort in San Diego, where she currently practices Lomi Lomi massage, body-work and integrative Spa therapies.
