Shiatsu Massage: Restoring Health and Balance

Shiatsu Massage: Restoring Health and Balance

When it comes to delivering a balanced massage to the body and soul, many people turn to Shiatsu. Shiatsu is a form of massage that originated in Japan and traditional Chinese medicine. It uses a caring touch to aid in self-healing and also uses gentle stretching and manipulation techniques. Shiatsu, meaning “finger pressure,” creates pressure with the thumbs, hands, elbows, or knees on various pressure points of the body.

We recently invited the public to attend a Shiatsu massage workshop. While our students were able to practice and fine-tune their skills with this form of massage therapy, their patients were provided with a soothing and healing massage. Here are three benefits someone receives after getting treated with shiatsu:

Restore and Maintain The Body’s Energy

In Shiatsu, physical touch is used to assess the distribution of “qi” throughout the body and correct any imbalances. Qi, pronounced “chee,” is the harmony of the body. By stimulating the person’s immune system, Shiatsu can treat the body as a whole and help to restore physical functions of the nervous and circulatory systems, musculoskeletal structures, and internal organs. Whether someone has experienced an external or internal trauma – such as an injury or depression/stress – Shiatsu can help ease those pains and bring everything back into balance.

Reduces Problems With Stiff Neck, Shoulders, and Back

From working at a desk all day to performing labor-intensive tasks, our body undergoes various types of stress throughout the day. While we’re able to do little things to help relieve this stress, our muscles and joints will eventually show signs of ailment. With a shiatsu massage, your massage therapist will be able to work the tension and spasms out of your muscles by pressing on acupressure points that release tension.

Promotes Healing From Sprains and Similar Injuries

Since a shiatsu massage focuses heavily on gently, yet effectively, rubbing and massaging the skin, it naturally helps stimulate circulation in capillaries of the skin’s soft tissue. This increased blood flow is what aids in healing sprains, strains, and other similar types of injuries. This is due to the increased blood flow bringing oxygen and nutrients to the injured area. The massage also serves to stimulate the sebaceous glands and keeps skin moist and smooth.

Holistic Massage School Illuminates A Career Path for Single Parents

Aboce: Rose and Staff Instructor Harmony Curtiss performing Shiatsu massage

Kim Bridges, who goes by the nick-name, Rose, is well on their way to a rewarding career as a Professional Massage Therapist.  Although only 500 hours of training are required for State licensure, Rose chose Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands) to enhance their Massage Therapist education with integrative, holistic health practices.  By the end of January, Rose will have successfully completed over 830 hours of education and training.  These courses include: Circulatory (Swedish) Massage, Anatomy, Herbal Healing, Sports, Therapeutic Stretching, Trigger Point Therapy, plus several Eastern and Western Massage modalities.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Rose chose one of today’s most in-demand careers with job growth projected to continue at a rate of 22% (vs the average 7%) through 2023! When asked who inspired them to enroll at Healing Hands, they replied, “My sister, Becky, who currently works as a Professional Massage Therapist at, Montage Hotel and Resort.”  Rose went on to explain that Becky knew of their interest in holistic health,  and heard the Instructors at Healing Hands were exceptional, encouraging them to check it out.  Rose said it wasn’t until after Becky gave them that first massage, that they realized how powerful the Healing Arts were, and their potential to transform lives. It was then that Rose made the conscious decision to enroll at Healing Hands and empower them-self to help others in the same way.

A parent to a 2 year old child, Love,  Rose said a career as a Professional Massage Therapist will afford financial independence and a flexible work schedule, two important considerations for a young, single parent. When asked about their future career aspirations, Rose revealed plans to move North with life- partner, Rusty. There, the two hoped to invest in a home with enough surrounding property to establish a Holistic Healing Center.  Rose says that in addition to providing therapeutic massage, they want to create an Apothecary of Herbal Preparations known to treat many common illnesses and ailments.  Rose’s Holistic Healing Center will offer these integrative therapies to positively impact clients’ health, healing and Mind/Body wellness in meaningful ways.

Holistic Health: Healing Patients The Way Nature Intended

Are you thinking of pursuing a path where you can make a positive impact on somebody’s life? By practicing holistic health, you’ll be able to help heal someone’s mind and body by utilizing natural healing methods. Here are two main benefits you’ll provide people by performing holistic health treatments:

Healthier Living Environment

Our bodies are constantly exposed to new compounds – from chemicals in household cleaning products to various medicines and food additives. More often than not, these compounds negatively impact our health and can limit our ability to lead a fulfilling lifestyle. By taking a holistic approach to healing, a person’s whole being – his physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellness – is taken into account. It focuses on the root cause of a person’s ailment and strives to eliminate it by encouraging the person to strive for wholeness and healthy living. With this type of treatment, our bodies are less exposed to synthetic substances and more exposed to natural medicines, herbs, and vitamins. This allows the body to be cleansed and able to restore itself properly.

Greater Overall Health

When treated holistically, people experience an overwhelming sense of health. This is because a holistic treatment uses natural remedies, such as proper nutrition, exercise, or detoxification, which creates additional benefits aside from correcting the person’s main ailment. For example, one of the side benefits of holistic treatment is the improvement of eye health particularly for those suffering from glaucoma. Their treatment would focus on natural medicines combined with eye exercises, healthy eating habits, natural vitamin supplements and stress relieving exercises like yoga and meditation. This type of treatment enables our bodies to live an overall healthier and happier lifestyle.

Loans at low interest rates are part of the aid package, which have to be paid back once you’re no longer attending college.

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) can also prove beneficial to qualified candidates. WIOA is part of the California Training Benefits Program for people who are unemployed or can prove need.  The Employment Development Department (EDD) helps to determine your eligibility and assigns a type of training you are authorized for.  Healing Hands participates in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, which can provide a grant towards your Massage Therapist or Holistic Health Practitioner tuition.

Massage Therapy: Touching Hearts, Changing Lives

Massage therapy is increasingly growing in demand and popularity. With its non-invasive approach, massage therapy is a powerful treatment that aids in the healing the entire body. By providing this service for someone, you’ll help improve both their health and happiness. Here are four major benefits of massage therapy:

Promotes Relaxation

When our body is under a lot of stress, it produces unhealthy levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, which creates adverse effects on our mental and physical health; anything from weight gain and sleep deprivation to digestive issues and headaches. However, a massage can prevent these negative reactions by drastically decreasing levels of stress and anxiety. When someone receives a massage, their body is able to relax, recover, and rejuvenate. This also plays a role in lowering diastolic and systolic blood pressure.

Strengthens Immune System

When our body is under any type of stress, it’s extremely susceptible to illnesses and injuries. Since massage therapy aids in decreasing stress, like discussed above, it also plays a role in strengthening the immune system. While the best results generally come from receiving massage treatments on a regular basis, even a few sessions can increase the cytotoxic capacity – the activity level of the body’s natural ‘killer cells’ – and enhance the body’s ability to deliver nourishment. This enables you to help keep someone’s body strong, resilient, and healthy.

Improves Circulation

The use of hands-on pressure during each massage moves the blood throughout the body and targets damaged or congested areas. This promotes a healthy healing process and can aid in a speedy recovery for an injured area. Moreover, the motions and techniques of massage therapy help remove lactic acid from the muscle tissues. This results in lymph fluid circulation, which carries metabolic waste products away from internal organs and muscles leading to an improved overall body function.

Improves Posture

From sitting at a desk all day to having a labor-intensive position, people’s necks, backs, glutes, and joints take a beating throughout the day. Massage therapy helps bring the body back to alignment by releasing tension in these common areas. By releasing these muscles from their tense state, due to bad posture or poor lifting form, the body is able to heal and move back to its proper position. The patient will experience greater mobility and flexibility, which will help prevent future injuries; especially if they receive treatment on a consistent basis.
