Holistic Massage School Students Share – How Sound Makes Art!

“It’s nearing the end of the Winter Semester at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, which means it’s time for students of our Anatomy for Bodyworkers class to take their finals and give their last, live team presentation” said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands – Laguna Hills.  “Our Anatomy class presentations are often the high-light for student practitioners.  It gives them an opportunity to show-case newly acquired knowledge in a creative, fun and interactive way.  In addition to team building, these group presentations provide students with an excellent public speaking opportunity which further develops their self-confidence and professionalism” she added.

This semester’s Anatomy for Bodyworkers class at the Laguna Hills campus, was taught by Staff Instructors Denise Fultz and Shaunna Avila-McClure. Students were separated into five groups and tasked with creating a group presentation on each of the five human senses.

One of the students’ presentations on ‘Hearing’ incorporated all the basics on how the human ear receives, and processes sound, then introduced an especially interesting pictures and new concepts.  One such concept came from a You-Tube video that demonstrated how vibration and frequency organize matter into geometric forms.

The ‘Resonance Experiment’ as students named it, showed the surface of a speaker topped with fine grains of sand.  As music played through it, its sound resonance vibrates.  As a result, the areas of maximum and minimum displacement are made visible, creating exquisite geometric shapes.  Different patterns emerged depending on the frequency of the sound.

The photos on the left show just a few of the geometric shapes resulting from the vibration and resonance of sound.

You can learn everything you need to know about Anatomy and the body’s five senses at Healing Hands. Ayurvedic Massage: Mother Of All Holistic Healing

ayurvedic massage“Ayurveda,” which means “Science of Life” in Sanskrit, is an ancient self-care healing system developed over 5,000 years ago. It is considered the “mother of all healing,” and is a beautiful art of balancing the mind and body through the medium of oil massage. Here are three main benefits you can provide someone by performing this peaceful practice:

Decrease Stress

Your body was not meant to undergo stress each day – especially stress that doesn’t receive a proper release, such as exercising – and eventually, it begins to show physical and mental signs of this. From muscle pains and headaches to poor digestion and low energy levels, stress can lead to a multitude of health problems. However, ayurvedic massage therapy can help keep these problems at bay by relaxing your mind and body. Naturally, this leads to decreasing your blood pressure and heart rate, which results in lowering your risk of heart disease and strokes.

Promotes Better Sleep

This benefit is derived from ayurvedic’s ability to decrease your stress, as mentioned above. Stress can cause you to be extremely restless and prevent you from getting the proper amount of sleep you need to keep your mind and body healthy. Unfortunately, this can lead to insominia and depression if it’s not taken care of. With ayurvedic massage therapy, your mind will be able to think clearer and rest easier, which will enable your body to heal and restore itself.

Relieves Chronic Back Pain And Migraines

The gentle pressure that’s provided through ayurvedic massage can have a powerful effect beyond the physical touch. When it’s applied to the face, it will increase the blood circulation in that particular area which can relieve the pain that’s felt from a migraine. It can also help relieve chronic back pain by increasing blood flow and relieving the tension.

Our ayurvedic massage course is an introduction to Ayurvedic principles and practices. It includes an overall view of Ayurvedic healing and Panchakarma including hands-on instruction of three different bodywork modalities based on the Ayurvedic constitutional types or Doshas: Abhyanga, Vishesh, and Udvartana massages. Students will become familiar with the three Doshas (distinct combinations of physical, mental and emotional characteristics: Vata, Pitta and Kapha ), three qualities of mind ( Sattva, Rajas and Tamas ), and three qualities of energy ( Prana, Tejas and Ojas ). In addition, they will learn hands-on the “marmas” (pressure points ), Shirodhara ( “thread of oil on the forehead” ) and Indian Head Massage. These practices restore balance, boost immunity and enhance the quality and duration of life for themselves and their clients.

We have equipped many graduates with the skills needed to provide successful treatment to their patients. Massage Therapy Students Deliver Presentations On the Body’s Five Senses

Throughout the year, Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands) offers a comprehensive, 100-hour course named: Anatomy for Bodyworkers taught by Staff Instructors Denise Fultz and Shaunna Avila-McClure. A requirement for Healing Hands 600-hour Massage Therapist, and 1000-hour Holistic Health Practitioner Programs, Anatomy for Bodyworkers delves deeply into the study of each of the body’s Systems. These include:  Muscular, Skeletal, Cardio-Vascular, Integumentary (Skin), Respiratory, and Immune Systems.

Anatomy for Bodyworkers lets students explore how each of these Systems function, interact with one another, and how they affect one’s whole health. It.is also designed to increase the student’s knowledge of anatomical terms and concepts, giving them opportunity to work with or along-side Physical Therapists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors and in clinical settings such as Hospitals, Doctors offices and Sports/Rehab Centers.

On the last day of class, Anatomy for Bodyworkers students were tasked with delivering a live, team presentation on one of the body’s five senses.  Student presentations included hand-crafted displays, photos, graphics, instructional videos, hand-outs and live demonstrations.  One presentation, on the sense of “Sight” stood out among all others, thanks to a young, female student named Kendall.

Kendall shared her personal story of life without sight.  Born 4 months premature, weighing only 1.5 pounds, Kendall was confined to an incubator for several months after birth. There, she was subjected to a pressurized supply of oxygen that caused the retinas in both her eyes to detach, resulting in blindness. Kendall shared what it was like going to a school for the blind, and about the technology, utility aids and strategies she uses to dress, study, write, read and navigate her physical surroundings.

Kendall also shared some of the challenges she faces, like trying to cross a street at a busy intersection that doesn’t have audible queues.  She also shared how her blindness has been a blessing, citing how her lack of vision keeps her from pre-judging others based on their race, color, sexual preference or appearance.  This kind of insight comes naturally to Kendall and represent just one of the reasons her classmates feel enriched by her presence and inspired by her wisdom.

At the end of class, Instructor Denise invited students to ‘circle up’ to say their goodbyes to graduating classmates.  After reminding them of the self-limiting beliefs and fears they had coming into the class, she commended them for rising to meet those challenges.  Then with utmost sincerity and pride, Denise acknowledged her students for their personal and professional growth, ending class with the same heart-centered approach with which it began.  Students surrounded Denise to deliver a group hug and express their gratitude for lessons learned.

Yoga Therapy: Relaxing The Mind, Healing The Body

yoga therapy

Just like any other language, you have to learn what your body is saying. It speaks to you on a daily basis, but you have to be willing to hear what it’s trying to tell you. If your body is telling you that it’s in need of a little extra TLC, always listen and pursue a holistic healing method, like yoga therapy, which can increase your health.

Yoga Therapy is an adaptation of yoga techniques and practices that are personalized to help individuals with specific health challenges. It uses yoga postures, breathing exercises, meditation, and guided imagery to improve mental and physical health. The holistic focus of yoga therapy encourages the integration of mind, body, and spirit.

Here are two ways it can help get your health back on track:

Mental Relaxation

When your mind is calm and free, your body will follow suit. Yoga therapy allows you to slow down and take note of the present moment. Whether you’re focused on your breath or healing a part of your body, this type of holistic treatment can help reduce anxiety, depression and even Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Allowing yourself to heal your mind is generally the first step in healing your body.

Physical Rehabilitation

Yoga therapy can often resemble physical therapy. Its yoga techniques are utilized in the delivery of the massage in order to bring a healing and soothing aspect to the rehabilitation process. These techniques teach you to relax, breathe, and de-stress. Just by doing one yoga therapy session, you’ll begin to notice a big difference in how your body operates. If you maintain a steady practice of this form of yoga, you’ll be able to feel improvements in your organ functions, digestion, and nervous system. Unlike standard yoga classes, yoga therapy sessions are typically conducted in one-on-one or small group settings. Yoga therapy can be paired with other forms of therapy, or it can be used to directly treat a specific issue.

Our introductory Yoga Therapy class will address topics that you can take and use as tools for your massage or personal yoga practice. It will include yoga sequences, meditation techniques and breathe-work for various ailments. We will explore how certain poses can create space between the vertebrae, within the joints, and around the internal organs; other poses feel like they lift the heart and open space between the neck and shoulders. By improving circulation and reducing muscle tension, Yoga Therapy can become a valuable addition to any therapist’s practice.

Holistic Massage School is… Making Our World a Healthier Place… …One Massage at a Time!”

At Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, (Healing Hands) our Graduates don’t just become Professional Massage Therapists, they become lifelong Healers and Holistic Health Advocates”, said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands – Laguna Hills campus.  “What students learn about the body, mind, and holistic therapies will not only serve their clients, it will positively impact their friends and loved ones for years to come.  Through the delivery of Therapeutic Massage, Practitioners can demonstrate the immediate benefits while educating others about the long-term gains of holistic self-care.  It is our Faculty’s intention that Healing Hands Graduates make our world a healthier place, one massage client at a time!”, she added.

So, what exactly is Holistic Health?  According to the American Holistic Health Association (AHHA) “Holistic Health is an ancient approach to healing that considers the whole person, emphasizing the connection of Mind, Body, and Spirit”.  Rather than prescribe drugs to treat symptoms, Holistic Health Practitioners look for the underlying cause.  This includes exploring their clients’ perceptions, beliefs, interpretation of events, response to stressors, habits and lifestyle choices.   By looking at their own posture, behavior and thoughts, clients can become active, empowered partners in the holistic healing process.

Holistic Health is also defined by Practitioners as “more than the absence of disease, it is a state of physical and emotional balance and wellbeing”.  Science has shown us that the body can not heal when it is in the ‘Fight or Flight’ mode. Assisting the client in achieving a state of relaxation is key to affecting positive change.  Many believe the role of the Holistic Massage Therapist / Practitioner is simply to create an environment of trust, safety, and relaxation that enables the clients innate healing system to kick-in.

Holistic Health includes helping clients grasp the reality that both positive and negative thoughts release chemicals that create physical reactions in their bodies.  By understanding the body’s neuro-chemistry, clients are more likely to make healthier choices.  Holistic Health Practitioners also believe that while all healing traditions from around the world offer valuable tools, the optimal treatment involves an integrative, holistic approach.  The Practitioner’s goal is to inspire an expanded awareness that opens their clients up to enhanced self-awareness, self-care, ease, joy and creative self-expression.

Aromatherapy: Holistic Healing Of The Mind, Body, And Soul

aromatherapy

“Without inner peace, outer peace is impossible.” – Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

Stress has, unfortunately, become a common denominator in many people’s lives but it doesn’t have to be. When you realize that stress only has power if you give it power then you will have opened your world to a whole new set of possibilities. One of the best ways to help your mind see this perspective is by utilizing aromatherapy practices.

Aromatherapy is a holistic therapy that uses essential oils from plants to positively affect an individual’s mental, physical and spiritual well-being. When inhaled or applied to the skin, essential oils have proven to help people overcome a variety of health problems with their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory medicinal properties. For over 5,000 years, aromatherapy has been a trusted practice among cultures all over the world. However, while aromatherapy can help improve your physical health, it can also make a large impact on your mental health as well. Some of the most common reasons that people use aromatherapy are to help improve sleep quality, reduce stress, and overcome depression.

Oftentimes, aromatherapy involves diffusing a combination of essential oils into the air in order to provide a relaxing atmosphere for an individual. Depending on the individual’s preferences though, it can also be inhaled through the nose, soaked in an oil-infused bath, or used as an oil during a massage. By combining massage therapy and aromatherapy, you’ll experience the most rewarding and euphoric feeling that will heal both the mind and body. You’ll notice that your stress levels will have lowered, your mind will feel clearer, and your body will feel lighter and rejuvenated.

Our aromatherapy course explores how 30 different essential oils can affect us on physical, emotional and energetic levels. Class discussions will include the history of aromatherapy, intrinsic oil qualities, extraction and blending techniques, and safe consulting practices. Through lecture, demonstration and hands-on experience students will learn how to formulate and use essential oil blends to treat a variety of disorders and stress-related problems for their clients.

We have equipped many graduates with the skills needed to provide successful treatment to their patients.
