Holistic Massage School Hosts TuiNa (Acupressure) Public Day For Massage Enthusiasts

Welcome to Public Day!!!

“At Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands), our nationally accredited programs ensure students are given a strong foundation in Anatomy and physiology, plus access to a variety of massage modalities and complementary holistic health courses” said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director.  “Our 100 hour TuiNa (Acupressure) class teaches a massage modality based on Traditional Chinese Medicine. This modality involves stimulation of acupressure points to affect the flow and balance of “chi”, (life energy) through “meridians” or pathways in the body”, she explained.

On February 5th, Healing Hands Escondido campus hosted “TuiNa Public Day”,

Practicing the Tui Na Technique of Rolling

directed by Staff Instructor, Raina Colvin.  Public Day is part of Healing Hands student evaluation process and is mandatory for a passing grade in any massage class.  On TuiNa Public Day, students were required to perform TuiNa massage on several public volunteers tasked with evaluating the student’s therapeutic performance and communication skills.

In Raina’s class students learned dozens of manipulation techniques to move chi through ill and injured areas of the body where blockages tend to occur. They practiced specific treatments to address chronic pain and disorders of the spine and joints, such as Rotator Cuff problems of the shoulder or Sciatica which can send pain across the hip and down the leg. Through hands-on demonstration and hours of practice, students learned to  master oscillating techniques to increase energy, as well as the traditional compressions and pulls characteristic of Tui Na. Benefits of this traditional modality include:

  • Chair Massage basics

Increased blood flow thru the body.
  • Reduces muscle stiffness and pain.
  • The warming of stiff muscles, tendons & ligaments which greatly reduce the potential for injury.
  • Increases range of motion and flexibility.
  • Positively impacts the nervous system by reducing stress hormones (Cortisol) and increasing pleasure hormones (Endorphins).
  • Helps speed healing of injured muscles and body tissues.
  • Speeds muscle recovery from over-use.
  • Calms the nervous systems and encourages relaxation.
  • Improves circulation of blood and lymph flow to the massaged area.

Holistic Massage School Hosts Public Day for Shiatsu Students

Shiatsu Public Day – getting started

As the students of Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands) are busy finishing up their semester classes, for many it marks the end of the Program and beginning of a new chapter of life.  In addition to a solid understanding of  Anatomy, Physiology, and hands-on massage therapies, the lessons  learned at Healing Hands, empower students to choose from a multitude of career paths in the Holistic Healing Arts.

Use the full weight of your body to give massage

During the final weeks of each course, students prepare for mandatory written exams and what the Healing Hands’ Faculty calls “Public Day”.  It requires they perform 1.5 hour massages to two complete strangers.  The massage is given to a public volunteer who is tasked with evaluating the student’s newly acquired skills.  Despite the students initial reservations, they almost always report that Public Day was an experience they truly enjoyed and won’t soon forget.

One of the classes hosting a “Public Day” this January was Shiatsu, taught by Staff Instructor, Harmony Curtiss.  Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shiatsu had been used throughout Asia for thousands of years before gaining popularity in the US.  Designed to improve the flow of qi (energy) in the body, Shiatsu helps restore balance in mind and body while activating the body’s innate healing system.  Rather than fluid strokes, Shiatsu Practitioners will use a variety of compression techniques and manipulations to effect the 12 energetic pathways of the body called “Meridians”.

Learn how to use your whole body!

Shiatsu is performed on a floor mat with the patient dressed in loose work-out clothing so his/her body can be moved and manipulated by the Therapist.   Many students start a Shiatsu massage by “crawling the body” before applying finger and palm pressure along the different Meridians.  Meridians can be found on their patient’s back, neck and shoulders, torso, arms, legs and feet, so it is also a therapeutic full-body massage.

While working, students reflected on Harmony’s pre-event words.  She reinforced that Holistic Health is all about creating a space for the ‘letting-go’ experience that facilitates all healing.  The therapeutic and holistic effects of Shiatsu include:  a reduction in muscle stiffness, anxiety, and stress; improved circulation and range of motion; plus an enhanced sense of well-being.

A career as a Professional Massage Therapist offers financial independence, a strong job outlook, flexible hours, a variety of work environments and opportunity to make a positive difference. The educational experience offered at Healing Hands exposes one to both Eastern and Western modalities and dozens of Holistic Health practices,  often serving as a catalyst for the students own personal growth, healing, enhanced self-confidence and sense of purpose.  To learn more visit us on-line at www.HealingHandsSchool.com or call us at (949) 305-2722 in Laguna Hills, or (760) 746-9364 in Escondido, or (858) 505-1100 in San Diego.

Shannon Gonzales

Dr. Shannon Gonzales

Each year we choose one teacher from our faculty of master teachers, to be honored as our Healing Hands Teacher of the Year. As with all our students, when we first met Shannon Gonzales, we knew little of her. Shannon came to us in 2004. We knew Shannon as an earnest student, dedicated to perfecting on her hands on skills. We also came to know Shannon as a woman working on her inner energy. To describe Shannon is to describe a woman of inner strength and deep faith in the healing process. Shannon finished her Holistic Health Practitioner program at Healing Hands School in 2005, and began teaching in 2006. Shannon’s thirst for understanding healing led her to study Traditional Oriental Medicine where she became a Certified Acupuncturist. It is this dedication to understanding the power of inner healing and her faith in the healing process that are a wellspring of inspiration for her students. Shannon, it has been truly wonderful to see your growth from a beginning student at Healing Hands School blossom into the master teacher you have become. Congratulations Shannon Gonzales, Healing Hands Teacher of the Year!

The New Year is often showed as a new baby. This year, Healing Hands School staff welcomed new babies to Teo and Blueray, and Shannon and Kenny. Welcome Amelia and Eli and all the new babies of the year!

We wish you peace in this New Year. May your health, your happiness and your homes overflow with love and joy.

Holistic Massage School Teams up to Host Therapeutic Massage Workshops

Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, (HHSHH), recently announced the release of two new health workshops for massage enthusiasts and their families.  Teaming up with area massage clinics and spas, Paula designed these information packed workshops to empower attendees of all ages.  Offered on a first come, first serve basis and delivered at the hosting Spa or Clinic’s location, these workshops serve to raise awareness of Healing Hands School while boosting memberships for spas and clinics, making it a win/win for everyone.

The first workshop to be released in 2015, Holistic Health and Wellness for All –   is a two-hour workshop offered to Spa/Clinic clients, employees, and their families.  This workshop touches on the physical, mental, and spiritual components of Holistic Health.  Attendees learn simple yet powerful holistic practices to increase their body’s energy, strength, flexibility and overall health.   This workshop has already received rave reviews from Spa patrons and has inspired new ideas for future workshops.

The second workshop, to be promoted for Mother’s Day 2015, Kneading Your Mother–  is a one-hour workshop for Spa/Clinic clients and their mothers.  This workshop addresses common problem areas of the body, and discusses how bad posture and alignment patterns can cause tension, pain, stiffness and even injury.    Paula also demonstrates correct body alignment, proper body-mechanics and exercises to help Moms of all ages keep their bodies strong and flexible.

Credited with developing the first Massage Training Programs for community colleges in the State, Paula and husband, Neha, are considered trail-blazers of Holistic Health education in California.  Since starting Healing Hands School in 1992, they’ve prepared more than 6,000 students for satisfying and rewarding careers as Massage Therapists and Holistic health professionals.

Currently, HHSHH offers two top-notch certification Programs and over 80 massage and holistic health classes.  Nationally Accredited and State Approved, Healing Hands is also the school of choice for So Cal therapists seeking continuing education credits required by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB).

Holistic Massage School Volunteers Help at OCRA, Orange County Ride for AIDS

OC Ride for AIDS (aka OCRA) is a bike ride that supports AIDS Services Foundation (ASF) in Orange County.   “AIDS Services Foundation Orange County’s (ASF) mission is to prevent the spread of HIV and improve the lives of men, women, and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Orange County”

At Healing Hands School of Holistic Health we pride ourselves in supporting our community, and the people around us.  This is the second time that Healing Hands has been a part of OCRA where students have volunteered their time.  A huge thank you goes out to the following students: Viet Vu, Tara Miali, Ivette Brosz, Maryam Lailabadi, Will Wooten, and Alison Jones.

OCRA

As  students and graduates alike, your selfless acts of volunteering will push you into the forefront of the massage therapy industry.  These students worked shifts giving Massage Therapy, pain and joint relief to the riders in the event.  Posted at the mid-line and at the finish line, these students helped relieve cramping muscles, helped stabilize overloaded systems, and brought a sense of peace to the otherwise charged and exciting atmosphere.

The coordinator of the event, Vince Bennet said, “We had amazing feed back from the riders as well as the “OCRA” Orange County Ride for AIDS orgnaizers regarding the exceptional massage team.  Thank you everyone from Healing Hands School of Holistic Health who attended as well as assisting in organizing the massage team.  This was our 5th year and we are thrilled to have Healing Hands as the official Massage Team of OCRA!”

And thank you Vince Bennett for providing our therapists with shade, water, t-shirts, and the opportunity to work with these amazing athletes, mothers, fathers, friends and survivors.  Is was truly an amazing experience.

Holistic Massage School Supports CalWORKs Career Training and Educational Events

Mental Health Systems (MHS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1978 to provide innovative and cost-effective mental health services to California residents state-wide.  MHS operates more than 80 community-based programs throughout California including ‘CalWORKs’ which is designed to transition people from welfare dependency to self-sufficiency through employment.  Toward that end, MHS provides a wide variety of training, professional development seminars and community outreach events year-round. Their training’s and courses are taught by a staff of highly trained, expert behavioral health professionals and their conferences include nationally recognized speakers and trainers. The events are designed to provide a unique interactive learning environment as well as provide networking opportunities for clients.shutterstock_124152457

On Monday, September 8th, 2014, Harmony Curtiss, Director of Special Funding for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HHSHH) was invited to speak at one such event in Oceanside, California.  “All welfare to work participants receive an appraisal of their education and employment background as well as assistance in finding a job or obtaining the education and training necessary to become financially self-sufficient” said Ms. Curtiss. “Healing Hands was invited because we care about our students and we help them through the process of enrollment to employment.  We deeply respect the training and physical work it takes to be a long-lasting massage therapist and we are always here to help our students as well as graduates succeed in their chosen field.  In addition to our ability to help students from all walks of life achieve their dreams, we are a nationally accredited school and listed on California’s Eligible Training Provider List which allows us to provide vocational training to CalWORKs clients.  Another reason we were targeted is because the field of Massage Therapist is considered an ‘in-demand’ career with job growth at 23%, higher than any other industry segment.  Just as importantly, our training can be completed in as little as a year and starting salaries range between $20 and $45 an hour making it a  ‘financially viable’ career as well”, she added.

shutterstock_34840459CalWORKs services are offered through Social Services as well as several Multi-Service Centers where employment related activities take place.  These include: vocational assessment, employment readiness and job appraisal, education and job training services, referrals to community services, and ongoing employment goals coaching.  CalWORKs clients must be either a recipient of assistance through San Diego County’s California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) or enrolled in the Welfare-to-Work Initiative.  CalWORKs clients are referred by Welfare-to-Work Employment Case Managers. They also work with referrals through other community-based organizations to secure necessary Employment Case Manager referrals.  For more information about CalWORKs call (858) 573-2600.

Healing Hands School of Holistic Health has been serving residents through two regional campuses located in Escondido and Laguna Hills for over 22 years.  With more than 80 Holistic Health courses and two Certification Programs to offer, HHSHH is considered a trail-blazer for Holistic Health Education in Southern California.  To date, HHSHH has prepared more than 6,000 students for successful and rewarding careers in Massage Therapy and Holistic Health.
