Holistic Massage School Offers Spring-time Course in Lomi Lomi (Hawaiian) Bodywork

Lomi Lomi is a highly spiritual form of body work that originated thousands of years ago in Polynesia, before being brought to Hawaii.” said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health.  “While many forms are passed down from generation to generation, Lomi Ka Ala Hoku, the form taught at Healing Hands, was created by Master Healers (Kahunas) as a ‘Rite of Passage’ ceremony,” she added.

The intention of Lomi Lomi is to help clear the recipient’s Spirit of unresolved issues and help them gain clarity about their their life-path”, said Jennifer Peterson, Staff Instructor. “The Lomi Lomi practitioner’s job is to facilitate a state of Pono Pono for the recipient; that means conflict free and aligned with the Divine,” she added.

Lomi Lomi is based on a Martial Art form called ‘Lua’, and often is often described as a moving meditation for the practitioner. Ideally the bodywork is performed in a harmonious, “sacred” environment accompanied by traditional Hawaiian music. The massage begins with a prayer for the recipient.  Then, a hands-on body scan is performed to locate areas of tension before initiating passive joint movement to relax, and warm up the body.  A pure coconut oil or an aromatherapy/oil blend is applied as the practitioner ‘dances’ around the table applying smooth, rhythmic, strokes.

Lomi Lomi practitioners use hands, fingers and forearms to execute the massage. Although the modality has a limited number of strokes, each massage is creatively customized for its recipient. While some report feeling a deep sense of calm following their massage, others describe it as emotionally profound.  Most, however, do report that the experience opened their hearts, and left them feeling especially loving and connected to themselves and others.

In the Lomi Ka Ala Hoku course offered this Spring (starting June 2nd), Jennifer teaches the traditional, full-body Lomi Lomi massage as well as advanced strokes and techniques. Students practice ‘pule’ or pray-full intention, and are encouraged to find a place of acceptance of their clients’ uniqueness and place upon their life’s journey.  Jennifer teaches that it is the practitioner’s un-conditional acceptance of their client that creates a sacred space for healing where the greatest change occurs.

In addition to Lomi Lomi, Jennifer teaches a series three Ayurvedic massage therapies for Healing Hands, namely THE VISHESH; UDVARTANA; and ABHYANGA.  An exceptional practitioner and caring individual, Jennifer has earned the distinction of Lead Therapist for the Spa at the Grand Del Mar Resort in San Diego, where she currently practices Lomi Lomi massage, body-work and integrative Spa therapies.

Holistic Massage School: Structural Integration

Holistic Massage School Offers Advanced Courses in Structural Integration

Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HH) offers a 1000-hour Holistic Health Practitioner Program that gives students a well-rounded, broad range of specialized skills and knowledge in the Holistic Healing Arts.  Going beyond HH’s 500 hours Massage Therapy Program, which is necessary to become State Certified, students who enrolled in the Holistic Health Practitioner Program (HHP) chose to take their knowledge and skills to the next level.  By selecting the HHP Program, these students gained access to more than 80 massage and related holistic health classes. Many of which are advanced techniques and complimentary classes such as: Neuro-muscular and Trigger Point therapies, Myofacial Meridians, Nutritional Superfoods, and Advanced Herbal Preparations.

HH’s Holistic Health Practitioners are uniquely qualified to promote the benefits of natural health in our communities.  While many bring their expertise to Spa or Massage Clinic settings, others enjoy the challenge of working with Athletes, Physical Therapists, Doctors and Chiropractors who require they have advanced knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology.

A trail-blazer when it comes to holistic education in Southern California, HH is one of the few massage schools in the state that offers 156 hours of Structural Integration. According to the school’s course Instructor, Ken Smith, “Structural Integration aligns and balances the body by lengthening and repositioning the fascia. (Fascia surrounds the muscles, bones and organs in the body and gives muscles shape and the body its structure.) Through massage, the fascia is lengthened, allowing muscles to move more freely and efficiently. In Structural Integration, the therapist applies pressure to the body systematically to release restricted fascia so the body can return to its optimal position.”

Principals of Structural Integration is a prerequisite for the 10 Sessions of Structural Integration and is a 36 hours course.  Principals of Structural Integration teaches students how the continuing pull of gravity and stress of daily activities and physical injuries can pull the body out of alignment. The body’s fascia gradually shortens, tightens and adjusts to accommodate misalignment resulting in body aches, pain, stiffness, and diminished energy. In this class students learn how gravity can be a negative or positive force, and how to apply geometry to balance structure and improve posture. They gain a clear understanding of the role connective tissue plays in our bodies and learn how interactive movement with the client can achieve longer lasting results. This course emphasizes how to touch our clients’ awareness, not just their bodies.

In HH’s 10 Sessions of Structural Integration course, students learn Ida Rolf’s original 10 session series. This is a systematic approach for taking the human frame apart and reorganizing it with a more balanced and efficient one. Each of the 10 sessions is not a series of techniques, but rather a series of goals that students and clients work together to achieve. Through lecture, dialogue, demonstration, and hands-on practice, students are able to experience being both the giver and receiver of a new progression in the series of 10 each week. When a body is aligned through Structural Integration, it is able to move with greater ease making good posture effortless, breathing easier, and requiring less energy to function. As the body becomes more flexible and coordinated, everyday function and performance improves.

Holistic Massage School Asks: Want a New Career in the New Year?

If pursuing a new career is one of your new year’s resolutions for 2017, Paula Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health wants you to know your timing couldn’t be better!

“In 2014, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics announced its projection that employment growth for Massage Therapist will continue to grow at a rate of 22 percent (vs the average 7%) between 2014 and 2024, adding 36,500 more professionals to this field” said Paula. “The astounding number of job opportunities received by HH’s Job Placement Department in 2016 is evidence of this growing demand. With the assurance of job security for years to come and a starting salary of between $25 to $45 an hour, becoming a Professional Massage Therapist is more rewarding now than ever” she added.

Massage Therapists employ their knowledge of Anatomy/Physiology plus a variety of hands-on strokes and manipulations to relieve pain, reduce stress, relax tight muscles and positively affect every system in their client’s body! With dozens of modalities to choose from, today’s Massage Therapists have a variety of ways to facilitate health and well-being for their clients. Some Massage Therapists may choose to specialize in relaxation, employing modalities such as Circulatory (Swedish) or Lomi-Lomi (Hawaiian Massage), Pregnancy and Geriatric (Elderly) massage. Those more oriented toward rehabilitation, may choose to specialize in Sports Massage, Deep-tissue Manipulations, Myo-facial or Trigger Point therapies.  Most often, however, Massage Therapists become adept in several modalities, each of which require specific skills, strokes and techniques.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the median annual wage for Massage Therapists was $37,180 in 2014. The best-paid 10 percent in the profession made more than $71,950, while the bottom 10 percent made less than $18,460. According to an articles published in US News, Massage Therapists rank #50 in The 100 Best Jobs and, ranked #8 in Best Health Care Support Jobs based on the following 6 component measurements:

  • Median Salary
  • Employment Rate
  • 10-Year Growth Volume
  • 10-Year Growth Percentage
  • Job Prospects
  • Stress Level
  • Work-Life Balance

What’s even more inviting, Massage Therapists now work for employers in a variety of private and public environments.  These include the traditional Spas, Massage Clinics, and Chiropractic offices plus the not so traditional jobs now being offered on Cruise ships, in Casinos, in Shopping Malls, at Gyms, and in Corporate board rooms to name a few. Regardless of their working environment, Massage Therapists still enjoy the satisfaction of providing instant relief and facilitating long-term health and healing for the clients they serve; what can be better than that!

Holistic School: Circulatory Massage for Hospice Patients

“Circulatory Massage is an excellent integrative therapy that can be used to enhance the quality of life for Hospice patients”, said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, (HH). “Massage Therapists who work with Hospice patients provide a very nurturing experience that helps reduce pain and discomfort while restoring feelings of self-esteem and self-acceptance”, she continued.

Paula is a Certified Massage Therapist, Holistic Health Practitioner, and the Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HHSHH).  Possessing over 25 years of experience as a multi-modality Massage Therapist and Instructor, Paula understands first-hand how providing a gentle, therapeutic touch delivered with focused attention can diminish the feelings of isolation and loneliness many terminal patients experience. Proven to be useful as a primary or integrative therapy for any condition with a stress component, Circulatory Massage can provide substantial relief to patients diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, one of the most stress-full events one can experience.

In HH’s Circulatory Massage class students are educated about age-related changes and their impact on the Hospice patient. These include, thin, fragile skin, bones, joints as well as common clinical conditions. Students examine the causes and contraindications associated with chronic and terminal illnesses. Through lecture, demonstration, and hands-on practice, students learn a variety of bodywork styles and techniques to address aging concerns while also promoting relaxation.

Circulatory Massage facilitates the release of neuro-chemicals that reduce stress and alleviate pain.  With regular Circulatory Massage, many Hospice patients enjoy a reduction in the need for narcotic and psychotropic medications which often come with their own negative side-effects.  In addition to physical benefits, Circulatory Massage delivers many significant and immediate psychosocial benefits for terminally ill patients.  Once diagnosed, many experience a roller-coaster of strong feelings, emotions, thoughts and fears.  These may include but are not limited to:

  • Denial about their diagnosis
  • Anger about the negative mental and physical effects of their disease or treatment
  • Frustration about the limitations imposed by the disease
  • A sense of being powerless and vulnerable
  • Depression and hopelessness
  • Guilt about how their illness and dying will affect loved ones
  • Mood swings caused by drugs, dementia, or simply the situation itself
  • Fear of death – the unknown, and/or the progression of the disease

Paula shares the reality of this work with students, explaining how working with the dying isn’t easy and often presents uncomfortable, even confrontational challenges.  It requires a willingness to face our own limitations and emotional vulnerabilities and to stay present and engaged despite of our fears.  She also shares how Circulatory Massage given to the terminally ill allowed her to share many enriching and fulfilling moments with patients she might otherwise have missed. Paula believes that providing Circulatory massage for Hospice patients can facilitate profound growth, both personally and professionally for the Massage Therapist and encourages all students to explore this soul-enriching massage specialty.
