Holistic Massage School: Our Instructors

Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (HHSHH) prides itself in retaining an incredibly strong teaching staff.  Here are just some of reasons students enjoy their courses

  • Experts in their field: Instructors at Healing Hands School are experts in the fields they teach. Most massage schools, pay one or two teachers a salary to teach a wide variety of subjects.  But here at Healing Hands School, we have a wide variety of teachers who teach very specific subjects.  This means that when you take a course in Advanced Circulatory & Sports Massage (better known as Sports) you are receiving instruction from an instructor who specifically practices Sports massage and can give you real world experiences.
  • Long Healthy Careers: The average time length for a staff instructor at Healing Hands School is 10 YEARS! Take a look at any spa, any facility, how many of that staff have been on-board for 10 or more years?  How much experience do they have helping students grow, learn and flourish?  We have instructors who have been with Healing Hands for TWENTY years!  They love the school, love to educate, and love to participate in a strong community of healers.  When you take courses at Healing Hands, you know you can expect a fun, energizing and inspiring classroom experience.

  • Inspiration: “That was the best Instructor I’ve ever had in my life!” – is a quote we often receive from students. Instructors here are dynamic.  If you do not understand a subject matter – just ask! And the Instructor will find a different way to explain the curriculum to you.  When a course is over, students often have a happy/sad feeling.  Happy to have received such an amazing instruction, sad that it’s over.  When you are done with a course, we hope you feel inspired to bring Massage and Holistic Health into the world around you.

Shannon Gonzales

Dr. Shannon Gonzales

Each year we choose one teacher from our faculty of master teachers, to be honored as our Healing Hands Teacher of the Year. As with all our students, when we first met Shannon Gonzales, we knew little of her. Shannon came to us in 2004. We knew Shannon as an earnest student, dedicated to perfecting on her hands on skills. We also came to know Shannon as a woman working on her inner energy. To describe Shannon is to describe a woman of inner strength and deep faith in the healing process. Shannon finished her Holistic Health Practitioner program at Healing Hands School in 2005, and began teaching in 2006. Shannon’s thirst for understanding healing led her to study Traditional Oriental Medicine where she became a Certified Acupuncturist. It is this dedication to understanding the power of inner healing and her faith in the healing process that are a wellspring of inspiration for her students. Shannon, it has been truly wonderful to see your growth from a beginning student at Healing Hands School blossom into the master teacher you have become. Congratulations Shannon Gonzales, Healing Hands Teacher of the Year!

The New Year is often showed as a new baby. This year, Healing Hands School staff welcomed new babies to Teo and Blueray, and Shannon and Kenny. Welcome Amelia and Eli and all the new babies of the year!

We wish you peace in this New Year. May your health, your happiness and your homes overflow with love and joy.

Holistic Massage School – Best Study Tools for MBLEx

Passing the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination, better known as the MBLEx, has been a requirement to become a Certified Massage Therapist in California for almost 3 years.  Through these years many students have come to us with various study apps, tools, books, and they all have same question: ‘Which one is best?’

Here is a list of potential tools for the massage therapist to study the MBLEx with some of the pros & cons we have found:

Holistic Massage School – When Should I Renew My License?

In the state of California there is one state wide Certification for Massage Therapists issued by the California Massage

CAMTC Certification RENEWED!

Therapy Council.  It is a voluntary Certification, but it takes the place of most city licensing so that a Massage Therapist can work in multiple cities without having separate licenses for each city.  A Certification by the CAMTC is required by the vast majority of employers since it guarantees that the Therapist has had a background check, and proper training before becoming a Certified Massage Therapist.  So most massage therapists in California are CAMTC Certified.

A CMT (Certified Massage Therapist) is supposed to renew their CAMTC Certification every two years.

We STRONGLY advise massage therapists to renew their license / certification 60-90 days before it expires.

This will guarantee that there is no gap, or lapse while the license is being processed.  We have heard several stories from our graduates where a therapist didn’t renew until close to their expiration.  When their license expired, and they were still waiting for their new one – they were unable to work. So – make sure to renew your CAMTC Certification early!

Holistic Massage School – Get to Know Our Office Angels

“Hello, you have reached Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, my name is _______!  How may I help you today?” says one of our Office Angels.  For many people these are the first words they hear when they call the school for more information.  And like all people looking to connect with the school, they find themselves answering questions that allow

Michelle Vonn

our office staff to connect with them.

In Escondido & San Diego, we have a staff of 7 Office Angels: Amanda Gleason, Mina Robinson, Erick Valdez, Jeremy Jarauguy, Michelle Vonn, Peregrine Curtiss, and Vivianna McCormick.

In Laguna Hills we have 2 Office Angels: Vanessa Leal and Trey Powell.

Erick Valdez

Each one of these wonderful Angels has taken, or is currently taking one of our Programs.  As a team, they are dedicated to helping students reach their goals.  Whether someone is calling for more information about the school, or about their individual account – these office Angels go above and beyond to help students.  And if an Office Angel does not know the question, they will take your name and number and get back to you.

Office Angels all have two important things in common:  they LOVE the school, and they LOVE to help people.  Office Angels originally come to Healing Hands as a student.  They come, they sign up for courses and enroll in a program, and then they stay to help others do the same.  Office Angels are drawn to working in the office for several reasons: they want to expand their own office skills, want to know more about how a

Vanessa Leal

small business works, want a regular schedule that is still in the field of holistic health, but most of all, they want to help people.

Office Angels are the reason why people join Healing Hands.  Without the Office Angels guidance we would not be able to receive Financial Aid, or have someone to talk with regarding  course options and goals.  Office Angels do more then answer the phones, they also guide people through their program and into fulfilling careers.

Holistic Massage School – Honoring Our Passed Graduates

On this sacred night, Healing Hands School would like to remember those students and graduates who have passed on from this world, and who touched the souls of the people around them who remain.

Though it is not possible to know all those who have passed, we are always honored when someone decides to join the legacy that is Healing Hands School of Holistic Health.  We know, that the students who come here move on to touch, and heal dozens, hundreds, thousands of other people.  Extending their touch and their belief of a  harmonious world to the furthest reaches of the earth.

Created by Josiah Elkins

This is especially poignant as a young man, a graduate, recently passed – Josiah Elkins.  He was a light, an inspiration to those around him.  And through his passing many graduates and Instructors have reached out to say their prayers, and to share their sorrow. It is with great honor that the Director of Healing Hands, Paula, Neha and Harmony Curtiss, had commissioned from Josiah a dream-catcher to bless the student clinic less then a year ago.

No amount of dream-catchers could replace the light that is Josiah, however we are honored to have a piece of his creation looking down on our clinic.  Josiah’s light will continue, in a small way here, as all of our graduates lights continue in each of their clients.  We know, in our hearts that Josiah’s light will continue to spread, on each student who joins our school, who takes the journey into compassionate touch that is massage and holistic health.

So, for all our graduates who have passed, we know that there is a small piece of them still with us.  Who’s light has touched their peers in class, their clients, their loved ones.  That their time on earth led them to bring peace, light, and healing to the world.  We honor those that have passed, and pray for their families, friends, and those that they have left behind.  We honor our graduates.

Bill & Tedd’s Excellent Adventure: A story about turtles & growth

Bill & Tedd

Bill & Tedd are two red-eared slider turtles housed at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, the Laguna Hills campus.  Today they turned 5 years old!

The growth of Bill & Tedd is directly tied to my growth into the Director of Laguna Hills.  Here is our story:

My name is Harmony Curtiss, I am the daughter the founding owners of Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, Paula and Neha Curtiss.  In some ways I have  worked for Healing Hands as long as I can remember – digging through boxes of registrations, carrying books, ect.  It was a running joke in our family that we couldn’t possibly drive into town without stopping by the school.

In 2012 I moved to Orange County to establish a full-time office presence to support our students.  I had to be self-motivated in order to fill the time with projects that would enable the school to grow.  And I am happy to say that not only did I accept the job, but I accepted the challenge that it came with.  I overcame so many struggles that first year: communication, massage clinic growth, ect.  But the hardest thing, was being alone 40 hours a week.

About 7 months into working all alone, I was out on the town with some friends in LA, when Jilly Bee, a leader in the Flow Arts Community, bought a pair of turtles as a surprise gift for a friend.  At the time I knew my roommate had a small fish tank he didn’t need – and I figured – ‘Hey, these guys could fit in my office! Without taking up to much space!’ And so I bought a pair of turtles for myself to keep me company.  They were about the size of a half dollar when I bought them.

At first the turtles names were Lomi Lomi and Mertle the Turtle.  Lomi was the bigger, lazier one that would punk on Mertle.  Lomi loved to bask on the rocks while Mertle loved to swim.  Constantly. But my parents insisted they be named Bill & Tedd.  Over the years, after much laughter from prospective students and current students alike – I embraced the names Bills & Tedd.  And as they have grown – so have I.

They started in a small 5 gallon tank.  And I hired my first part-time employee – Andrea Pinsonneault.  Andrea helped teach me

Bill & Tedd’s 50 Gallon Tank

professionalism.  From dress, to marketing, and sales.  But eventually the turtles outgrew the 5 gallon tank and we upgraded to a 50 gallon tank.  About this time, Andrea moved on to be our Marketing Coordinator and I hired Haley Simon as a full-time employee and co-worker.  I moved the turtles into their new home, and proudly showed them off to visitors.

From that moment on, I too had a partner in the office.  Hayley and I struggled to bring Healing Hands into the digital world.  Getting student files to be digital, digitizing handouts so they could be emailed, creating systems to track all these files and forms.  And as we grew into a powerful team, we outgrew our office.  In 2014 we moved into the Suite the Laguna Hills office is in today, and of course the turtles came with us.

Bill and Tedd had always been the center of the office, people sit by them, feed them, play with them through the glass.  And Bill & Tedd respond.  Don’t believe me? Just go give them a look in the tank, they will jump off and splash around – hoping you’ll feed them some shrimp.

Bill & Tedd’s 150 gallon home

In 2015 I acquired a 150 gallon tank for Bill and Tedd.  With the help of about 20 friends, we got the 150 gallon tank up the stairs and into the small room in the back where I could refurbish the tank.  I repainted and re-glazed it so it could be professional enough for an office.  By the time I had the tank installed, Hayley was moving on to go to Acupuncture school, and I hired 2 people to replace her.

These two people, Jennifer Acuna and Adam Bovenkamp, dealt with one of the hardest years I have had at Healing Hands School.  The laws and regulations surrounding a massage school became tighter on a national, state, and local level.

During the height of our stress, Bill became sick!  Bill was swimming lopsided, not quite able to swim right.  So off to the vet we went!

After having to give poor Bill anti-biotic shots for pneumonia every day for 2 weeks, I got him back swimming and gave the tank a new make-over.  Increasing the plants and items in the tank, giving them both their own platforms and lights to bask on.  My turtles had become teenagers, and they needed separate areas.

At the beginning of 2016 there was roughly 300 massage school approved by the California Massage Therapy Council.  By the beginning of 2017 there was 100.  Bill got better, and the paperwork surrounding the school stabilized.  Jenn moved on to pursue a career in counseling, and Adam moved into a partnership with a clothing company, so I hired 2 new people.

Loving those hide-away places!

One year later my newest employees, Vanessa Leal and Trey Powell, have become Healing Hands School advocates of their

own.  Feeding the turtles every morning, turning on their lights, and turning them off every night.  They enjoy taking care of Bill and Tedd, our 2 mascots, on a daily basis.  And as my daily work load has changed to working on the future of Healing Hands – I still clean the tank.  In the end, I am still responsible for the well-being and health of Bill & Tedd just as I am responsible for the well-being and health of the Laguna Hills Campus.   And I hope we are able to grow together for many more years.

So, without further ado – HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILL & TEDD!!!!!! You are some of the luckiest turtles in the world, just like the students who find Healing Hands School, may your Adventures Be Excellent!

Holistic Massage School Offers Spring-time Course in Lomi Lomi (Hawaiian) Bodywork

Lomi Lomi is a highly spiritual form of body work that originated thousands of years ago in Polynesia, before being brought to Hawaii.” said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health.  “While many forms are passed down from generation to generation, Lomi Ka Ala Hoku, the form taught at Healing Hands, was created by Master Healers (Kahunas) as a ‘Rite of Passage’ ceremony,” she added.

The intention of Lomi Lomi is to help clear the recipient’s Spirit of unresolved issues and help them gain clarity about their their life-path”, said Jennifer Peterson, Staff Instructor. “The Lomi Lomi practitioner’s job is to facilitate a state of Pono Pono for the recipient; that means conflict free and aligned with the Divine,” she added.

Lomi Lomi is based on a Martial Art form called ‘Lua’, and often is often described as a moving meditation for the practitioner. Ideally the bodywork is performed in a harmonious, “sacred” environment accompanied by traditional Hawaiian music. The massage begins with a prayer for the recipient.  Then, a hands-on body scan is performed to locate areas of tension before initiating passive joint movement to relax, and warm up the body.  A pure coconut oil or an aromatherapy/oil blend is applied as the practitioner ‘dances’ around the table applying smooth, rhythmic, strokes.

Lomi Lomi practitioners use hands, fingers and forearms to execute the massage. Although the modality has a limited number of strokes, each massage is creatively customized for its recipient. While some report feeling a deep sense of calm following their massage, others describe it as emotionally profound.  Most, however, do report that the experience opened their hearts, and left them feeling especially loving and connected to themselves and others.

In the Lomi Ka Ala Hoku course offered this Spring (starting June 2nd), Jennifer teaches the traditional, full-body Lomi Lomi massage as well as advanced strokes and techniques. Students practice ‘pule’ or pray-full intention, and are encouraged to find a place of acceptance of their clients’ uniqueness and place upon their life’s journey.  Jennifer teaches that it is the practitioner’s un-conditional acceptance of their client that creates a sacred space for healing where the greatest change occurs.

In addition to Lomi Lomi, Jennifer teaches a series three Ayurvedic massage therapies for Healing Hands, namely THE VISHESH; UDVARTANA; and ABHYANGA.  An exceptional practitioner and caring individual, Jennifer has earned the distinction of Lead Therapist for the Spa at the Grand Del Mar Resort in San Diego, where she currently practices Lomi Lomi massage, body-work and integrative Spa therapies.
