What is FSA and FAFSA?

FSA stands for Federal Student Aid and is the program a student applies for.  FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  Financial Aid is a term that describes a funding package that assists students with costs of tuition, housing, and other fees. The components making up this aid package include federal grants and loans.  Grants are forms of awards that do not need to be paid back. Loans at low interest rates are part of the aid package, which have to be paid back once the student is no longer attending college.

Typically, these awards are determined based on economic needs of students (need-based financial aid) and are calculated from the FAFSA data collected on the students themselves and their parents.
