What Meditation Can Do For Your Overall Health

While there are countless ways to promote your health and wellness, people often overlook the importance of meditation. If there is one thing you should be doing daily to remain healthy and happy, it is meditation. The power of your mindset depicts your outlook on life. So why aren’t we trying harder to train our ways of thinking through meditation?

One of our main priorities at Healing Hands is teaching our students how to maintain a balanced and healthy life. An essential piece of this balance is a healthy mind. We teach meditation practices to our students so they can create mindfulness for themselves. Because this type of practice can influence one’s life so heavily in a positive way, they are shown the importance of meditation in their courses and are encouraged to practice outside of the classroom.

We believe meditation has the ability to heal your mind, body, and soul- here are a few reasons how:

Reduce Your Anxiety 

Anxiety is no simple struggle, and everyone experiences it in some manner. It leaves our minds and bodies feeling chaotic, confused, and exhausted. One of the best ways to eliminate this feeling is through meditation. Mindful practices will give you the ability to control your thoughts, even in ways as simple as breathing. By activating and training the area in your brain that regulates your thinking and emotions, the feelings of worry begin to diminish. Let yourself truly live in the moment by meditating to feel your anxiety fade away.

Elevate Your Mood

You may believe the only way to get those “feel-good” chemicals in your body flowing is through exercise, but that’s not the case. Meditation practices increase the levels of serotonin and endorphins in your brain, leaving you feeling happier than you began. It allows you to transform your mindset in order to get rid of those negative emotions, giving you more room for lasting positivity in your life. Once you tune into this way of thinking, you’ll notice your ability to make rational decisions will become easier, and you will be happier.

Gain Self Control

Do you ever feel as if you have no willpower? Meditation might be a good way to retrain that! It activates your anterior cingulate and prefrontal cortex; which are the parts of your brain that are connected to self-control. Disciplining your mental weaknesses requires practice, and meditation is the perfect way to train your brain. Meditating will give you the strength to resist those negative thoughts or temptations you may be facing.

Decrease Your Stress

Meditation lowers the amount of Cortisol- the stress hormone- in your body. If you ever feel that the pressures you are facing are too much to cope with, allow meditation to clear up space in your mind. This will give you the opportunity to prioritize your tasks and calm your nerves. Being able to organize your thoughts through self-reflection practices will bring clarity and peace. Massage Therapist Instructor, Denise Fultz, Promotes Benefits of Reflexology

We couldn’t be happier for Staff Instructor, Denise Fultz, whose article “Reflexology” was recently featured in the Spring 2018 Issue of California Current” said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands).  Denise is a dear friend and a talented, multi-subject Instructor who has been with us for more than 20 years.  To have her expertise recognized by the American Massage Therapy Association, is well-earned honor and an occasion to celebrate.  Congratulations Denise! The article Paula is referring to shares a brief history about Reflexology and specifics about how it works.  It outlines the general health benefits of the modality, like its effectiveness in reducing tension and inducing relaxation. Denise also shares anecdotal stories of her experiences using Reflexology in class, with students as well as with Hospice and Palliative Care patients.

Reflexology’s goal is to remove energy blockages in our body’s system, increasing circulation and re-establishing homeostasis (a state of balance within the body/mind).  It can be used as an integrative therapy, stand-alone therapy, and as an effective technique to soothe anxious clients.

A Certified Massage Therapist and talented Practitioner, while teaching for Healing Hands, Denise also worked as a Massage and Energy Therapist for Hospice in San Diego.  There, she was credited with developing, organizing and directing the first Massage Therapy Program for Hospice patients. Her team of Professional Massage Therapists provided therapeutic massage and natural therapies to enhance patient care and comfort. The Program was so well received, it inspired Denise to author her first book; “Comfort Care: Natural Symptom Solutions for Palliative and Hospice Care, which she hopes to publish next year.

Holistic Massage School Offers Exceptional Course in Reflexology

“An effective holistic health practice that goes well with most massage modalities, Reflexology treatments are deeply relaxing and therapeutic”, said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, (Healing Hands).   “When integrated into each therapeutic massage session, Reflexology allows students to positively impact their clients’ endocrine, immune, circulatory, respiratory, and neuropeptide systems.  Our 30-hour course will be offered on Sundays starting May 27th, from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM, so mark your calendar!”,   she added.

Reflexology is a form of touch therapy that involves the Practitioner stimulating various pressure points on the feet and hands to promote health and healing.  The course is taught by Staff Instructor Denise Fultz, who combines lecture, demonstration and hands-on practice to familiarize students with reflex points and techniques for their manipulation.  Students learn which reflex points relate to specific organs, glands and other systems of the body, so they can customize client treatments.  The modality has been shown to improve a variety of common ailments including Plantar Fasciitis, Stress, Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Anxiety and various digestive disorders.
