Holistic Massage School Shares Five Strategies for Grocery Shopping for Optimal Nutrition

“We all know that food ordered at a local Diner or Buffet can be filled with empty calories and ingredients that aren’t always the healthiest” said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health – Laguna Hills (Healing Hands).  “By selecting and cooking your own meals, you are empowered to take charge of your nutritional intake which is essential to Holistic Health”, she continued.

According to researchers in Australia who examined the habits of 1, 136 women, food shoppers who made a habit of planning meals made better shopping decisions.  The evidence showed that those who pre-planned and shopped with grocery lists ate more healthfully than those who did not.  Shopping choices for these women included more fruits, vegetables and healthier product options. The study also found that approaching grocery shopping as a holistic practice to nurture yourself (and your family) as opposed to a chore, made a huge difference.

To ensure that your next trip to the grocery store is one you’ll look forward to, the Faculty at Healing Hands has put together five ‘Insider Tips’.  These tips will help you navigate grocery stores and find the best products, so you receive the best return for your nutritional dollar.

Tip #1 – Even those of us who do read labels acknowledge they can be extremely confusing. Fortunately, experts say that as a rule, the fewer the ingredients listed on the label, the healthier the food.  So, the best option is to select the product with the shortest list of ingredients.

Tip #2 – Observe your product’s positioning on the shelf.  Be aware that the big food companies pay “slotting fees” to position their products on the shelves at eye level.  The tactic usually leaves the top and bottom shelves open for healthier, more natural alternatives.   So, be prepared to look high and low for the most nutritious options.

Tip #3 –Shop the circumference of the store to find foods with the best nutritional values.  In most grocery stores, the healthiest food items can be found along the walls, rather than within internal isles.  Fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and fresh meat, poultry and seafood can all be found around the edges of the store. Typically, nutritionally less potent, processed food items are moved to the inner isles, and often can be avoided all together.

Tip #4 – Remember the Nutrition Pyramid and be sure to include your daily requirement of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and low-fat protein sources when planning meals and creating a shopping list.  The Pyramid model does not take into account dietary restrictions of all individuals, so learning what YOUR individual needs are, is equally important.  Having healthy selections readily available can keep your blood sugar balanced and curb unhealthy food cravings and impulsive eating.

Tip #5 –  Beware of deceptive marketing tactics. Many conglomerate companies use words that sound healthy to ‘spin’ the description of their food product.  For example, the term ‘Whole grains’ ensures the product has not been refined and stripped of most of its nutritional value.  The term ‘Multi-grain’ on the other hand, is deceptive as it may or may not have been refined, so it offers no guarantee of its nutritional value.  Learning differences such as these can help you avoid consuming foods with empty calories.

Holistic Massage School Celebrates International Men’s Health Week

“Led by the Men’s Health Network, International Men’s Health Week, June 11-17, was created to increase awareness of male health issues, and develop policies and health services that meet their specific needs on a global scale”, said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands).  “In support of these endeavors, we are asking all Healing Hands students to encourage the men in their life to be more proactive about their holistic health”, she added.

In support of International Men’s Week, Healing Hands Faculty offers the following self-care strategies for men.  By adopting these 8 holistic health strategies, men can reduce their risk of cardio-vascular and other chronic diseases that can shorten their lives.

Holistic Self-Care Strategies for Men

#1 – Practice Safe Sex!  With HIV/Aids and so many Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) out there, ie: HPV, preventing sexually transmitted diseases is an essential self-care activity for men. Using a condom can greatly reduce chances of getting or spreading a STD.  Other risk reducing strategies include: a reduction in sex partners, mutual monogamy, and Hepatitis B & HPV vaccinations. Get treatment immediately If you suspect you may have contracted an STD.

#2 – Know Your Health Numbers! Keep track of important numbers such as your Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar levels, LDL & LDH Cholesterol, and Body Mass Index (BMI).  If any of these numbers are higher than normal, speak with your doctor for suggested life-style changes.  

#3 – Tune in to How You Feel!  Be sure to get regular health check-ups and any medical screening tests you feel may be needed.  Tune in to yourself and notice signs and symptoms of disease such as: pain in the chest, arms, shoulder, neck, jaw, or back.  Notice if you experience excessive thirst, shortness of breath, feeling light-headed or faint.  If you experience any of these signs or symptoms, don’t wait; seek help from your doctor or neighborhood urgent care facility right away. 

#4 – Say Nighty Night!  Adult men need a minimum of 7 to 8 hours of sleep nightly.  Simple strategies to help men get the sleep they need include: turning off computers and electronic gadgets that emit sleep inhibiting blue-light; adhere to the same bed-time and morning wake schedules; keep the bedroom dark, quiet, and temperature controlled; and avoid large meals or exercise right before bed-time.

#5 – Reduce Stress! – A prolonged bout of stress affects your health as well as your emotional wellbeing.  To keep your worries in perspective and reduce stress, make it a point to take good care of yourself.  Eat well, get plenty of sleep, exercise, laugh, play, and treat yourself to a Therapeutic Massage regularly.  Just one hour of Massage can substantially reduce stress hormones and increase happy hormones positively impacting mood.  

#6 – Let’s Get Physical!  At a minimum, adult men need 2.5 hours of moderate to intense aerobic activity each week.  In addition, muscle strengthening activities two or more days a week will help maintain strong, healthy and flexible muscles and joints.  Regular exercise can substantially reduce the risk of chronic or cardio-vascular diseases that cut a man’s life-span short.  Just a ½ hour walk daily can reduce one’s risk of obesity by 50 % and positively impact one’s physical health and sense of emotional wellbeing. 

#7 – Eat to Thrive!  A healthy diet is one that provides essential nutrients and contains food from all the basic food groups.  There should be a balance between calories-eaten with calories-burned, so daily activity is key to keeping your weight low.  You should also limit high sugar food items or those that are high in salt, fat, alcohol and calories.  Best choices are fresh, un-processed foods such as green leafy vegetables, whole grain products, colorful fruits, and lean protein such as Chicken, Fish, or Pork. Holistic Massage School Offers Memorial Day Special for Veterans and Military Members

“San Diego County is known for having the largest percentage of Veterans in California”, said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health.  “This year, in addition to honoring those who lost their lives, we want to recognize all Veterans and Active Service Members for their service and sacrifice.  Toward that end, Healing Hands will be offering complimentary, one-hour Massages to Service Members who present a U.S. Military ID at any of our three SoCal locations”, she continued.

 Healing Hands’, “We’ve Got Your Back!” Memorial Day special will run Tuesday, May 29th and Wednesday, May 30th at all three Healing Hands’ Student Massage Clinics.  Veterans may call to schedule their free massage during the school’s office hours which are 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM Mondays through Fridays.  (See contact info in the closing paragraph below.)

Paula’s appreciation for Military members is nothing new to the Faculty and Students at Healing Hands. Aware that massage can be of significant value in treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, (PTSD), affecting close to 50% of Vets returning from war zones, Paula created a Community Internship Program.  The Program has given students opportunity to provide therapeutic massage to Veterans at Recuperative Care Centers, Wounded Warrior Clinics, Stand Down events and Resident Facilities for more than 25 years.

The symptoms of PTSD include feelings of hyper-arousal, high-anxiety, digestive disorders, super-vigilance and insomnia.  These symptoms are experienced when Cortisol levels (stress hormones) are elevated for extended periods of time. Massage therapies like Circulatory Massage and Deep Tissue have been found to substantially reduce Cortisol levels and associated symptoms.  In addition, studies found that Massage also increases Serotonin and Dopamine (good feeling hormones) levels.  Higher levels increase one’s feelings of well-being, reduce feelings of anxiety, and relieve Insomnia.  Massage Therapists help to facilitate the neuro-chemical changes that allow our body’s healing systems and processes to kick in.

Holistic Massage School Celebrates ‘Correct Posture Month’ and Shares How Posture Causes Pain

“Did you know, more than 540 million people worldwide suffer from back pain”, asked Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health – Laguna Hills (Healing Hands). As a school of Holistic Health, we have a responsibility to educate students about how posture  dramatically impacts their health.  By teaching Students actionable measures to strengthen their own posture, they in turn help raise awareness among clients in our communities, she continued.

According to the Faculty at Healing Hands, strong posture is the key to moving with grace, ease and confidence.  It is also key to avoiding pain and injury.  In fact, studies  show that focused exercise (for posture correction) combined with mindful meditation reduce pain and improve range of motion better than medications.  More importantly, holistic strategies achieved desired results more frequently and with fewer negative health consequences.

May begins a month of campaigns that unite thousands of Therapists, Doctors, Physical Trainers and Health Educators.  Intent on addressing the mind/body consequences of poor posture, they recommend the A-C-E posture model, developed by Dr. Steven Weiniger.  An Internationally renown Posture Specialist, Dr. Weiniger encourages people to consider how their posture affects their overall health by emphasizing Awareness, Control and Environment. 

Awareness is best accomplished by taking photos of yourself standing face forward to the camera and then in side-view.  While most individuals ‘feel’ they are standing tall, a picture can help them recognize areas of weakness. These weaknesses can undermine how the body functions and contribute to muscle strain causing joint pain, limiting range of motion, and negatively impact our overall sense of wellness.

Control refers to the actionable strategies one can implement to increase strong posture.  These include therapeutic stretches, postural practices, massage therapies, Chiropractic adjustments, physio-therapies, strengthening exercises as well as increased activity levels.    Strong posture is the key to moving with ease and confidence while avoiding pain and injury. Studies also show that focused exercise and mindful meditation can reduce pain and improve movement better than pain medications and with far less negative health consequences.

Environment, or the creation of a posture-smart environment, refers to optimizing your home, work, play and sleeping environment to align each of your 4 posture zones.  These zones include your head, which should be centered over your body, and the alignment of your torso, pelvis and legs.

Posture studies show that when integrated, these strategies can speed healing of injuries, relieve pain, restore musculo-skeletal balance, elevate mood, increase alertness, boost energy, and enhance one’s self-esteem.  Conversely by allowing your bad posture to continue, one may experience increased pain which can lead to depression and contributes to headaches, lack of energy and a feeling of being drained and uninspired.
