Holistic Massage School Asks… Can You Recognize the Characteristics of an Abusive Relationship?

As Holistic Health Practitioners, the Faculty at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health understands the negative impact toxic relationships can have on one’s health.  By employing a heart-centered approach to education, Healing Hands Instructors model healthy interactions and set firm limits on acceptable classroom behavior.  By creating a safe, respectful environment, they ensure that all students are empowered to learn, make mistakes, and grow throughout their educational journey.

Being subjected to repeated stress, fear, arguments, unkind criticism and manipulation can dramatically impact one’s emotional health. Although psychological abuse is often considered less severe than physical, all forms of abuse can have devastating physical and emotional effects. In addition to injuries from physical assault, abuse victims may suffer from chronic stress, tension, pain, gastric disorders, eating problems and psychosomatic issues.  Abuse is also tied to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, addictions, and post traumatic stress disorders.

So, what happens to Students outside the classroom?  How can they learn to recognize abusive behavior and set boundaries before victimization can occur?  At Healing Hands, we believe the answer is education and awareness.  Click here to read our recent Blog – How to Nurture Healthy Relationships, and read on to familiarize yourself with several common characteristics of abusive relationships:

  1. Physical violence. When someone uses force to get his or her way such as hitting, slapping, grabbing, shoving or blocking you from leaving.
  2. Dishonesty. Withholding information, lying and gaslighting (changing stories) to keep information from being shared. Dishonesty also includes when one person steals from another.
  3. Intimidation. Trying to control aspects of the other person’s life by making threats, or through menacing comments or behavior.  This includes attempt to keep his or her partner from friends and family by threatening violence or a break-up.
  4. Disrespect. When someone makes fun of the opinions and interests of the other person or destroys something that belongs to and is valued by the person.
  5. Hostility. One person vents their anger on another, picking fights or antagonizes another. This may lead to one person changing his or her behavior to avoid upsetting the other.
  6. Control. One person makes all the decisions and tells the other what to do, what to wear, or with whom they may spend time. Unreasonably jealousy, and/or attempts to isolate the other person from his or her friends and family.
  7. Humiliation. – Yelling or screaming at you in public is a ploy intended to make you submissive and to control you in front of others. This is not acceptable under any circumstance and should be recognized as abusive.
  8. Verbal Insults – While it’s natural to occasionally loose our temper in an argument, that never excuses the use of foul language or name calling. Verbal abuse ranges from insulting one’s looks, job or intelligence to blasting one’s competence, or value. Verbal abuse is often accompanied by foul language, but its intention is to diminish one’s self-esteem so they become compliant and reliant on the abuser.
  9. Manipulation – Abusers are skilled manipulators who often succeed at convincing another that their physical or verbal outbursts are the result of misbehavior on their part. The aim is to make one doubt their own self-worth. That’s why most victims continue to excuse or forgive this kind of behavior.
  10. Calculated Outbursts When a person only demeans you, yells at you, or hits you in private. Although they may attempt to convince you that they have no control over their abusive outbursts, they never lose control in front of others or in public. Calculated outbursts are just another of the Abusers tools for manipulation and should not be tolerated.  Let the abuser know you won’t be spoken to in that manner and leave the scene immediately whenever possible.

Holistic Massage School Offers Transformative Course in Sacred Hawaiian Massage

Lomi Lomi bodywork originated in the South Pacific and has been passed down among Hawaiians from generation to generation.  At Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, (Healing Hands), Instructor Jennifer Peterson teaches Lomi Ka Ala Hoku, a form developed in ancient Temples and delivered only by Kahunas (Master Healers) as a ‘Rite of Passage’ ceremony.  Its intention is for the recipient to develop a strong sense of social and family responsibility and gain an expanded awareness and spiritual empowerment.

When asked about her most recent class, held at the Laguna Hills classroom, Jennifer said “It was a wonderful Hawaiian learning experience full of ‘Aloha’ (which means Love, Peace & Compassion) and I am happy to send another talented group of Lomi Ka’Ala Hoku Therapists out into the world to do their healing!”

Considered a transformational massage and healing system, this therapeutic modality provides a holistic approach to healing by balancing the body-mind and Spirit. In this course, Students learn how to deliver the traditional, full-body Lomi Lomi massage.  Jennifer also teaches advanced strokes and unique ways Students can use their hands, palms, knuckles and forearms to apply soft and deep tissue massage.

The practice of ‘pule’ or ‘prayer-full intention’ is also key to the Lomi Lomi healing experience and something Jennifer highly encourages. Before beginning each massage session, the student is directed to consciously release all prejudice, ego, and judgement of their clients. They are encouraged to turn their attention to their client’s uniqueness, focus on positive attributes, and say a prayer for their health and healing.

Hawaiian music enhances the Lomi Lomi experience as the practitioner attunes the flow of the massage with the music to harmonize energies within the body.  When observing this sacred massage modality, it appears the Practitioner is dancing around the table.  The rhythmic, steady pressure of long, fluid strokes make Lomi Lomi a powerful healing modality with affects that can be felt long after a session.

The physiological and emotional benefits of Lomi Lomi include but are not limited to:

  • Improving the health of the body’s Systems: lymphatic, immune, circulatory, respiratory and digestive
  • Facilitating deep relaxation and a sense of peace
  • The release of deeply held neuro-muscular tension
  • Speeds the healing process, increases flexibility, boosts energy flow
  • Physically rejuvenating and energizing – boosts mood and outlook
  • Can act as a catalyst to help one release fear, anger, guilt and grief
  • Provides an opportunity to let go negative beliefs, self-criticism and forgive/transcend the effects traumatic experiences
  • Brings clarity and confidence, and increases trust and open-heartedness
  • Creates opportunities for introspection, increased self-awareness, self-acceptance and self-love.
  • Generates an overall sense of joy, empowerment, vitality, balance, and love of life

Jennifer Peterson brings an innate talent for bodywork and nearly twenty years of experience to her position at Healing Hands and teaches at all three classroom locations.  Her next Lomi Lomi class starts on August 4th at the Escondido campus located at 125 West Mission.

In addition to teaching Lomi Lomi,  Ayurvedic Massage, and Aromatherpy for Healing Hands, Jennifer practices massage, body-work and integrative Spa therapies at select high-end Spas in the San Diego area.  She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from UCLA and received her Holistic Health Practitioner training from Mueller College of Holistic Studies.  For more information on Lomi Lomi or to contact Jennifer directly, e-mail her at: Jennyp8@live.com.

After the Certification: Where Massage Therapists Work

You have reached the end of your Massage Therapy Program – so what’s next?

Massage therapists have a large variety of settings in which they can work in. We offer our students diverse classes so they can discover what types of massage they like best.

One of the most important benefits of being a massage therapist is the amount of work environment options available. Massage therapists can work in any niche field of healing of their choice. Every work setting will provide a different experience as the needs of clients differ.

A few types of environments that massage therapists may work in:

Fitness Centers

Massage therapists have the ability to work in fitness centers with athletes of every kind. Sports massage therapy techniques treat a variety of clients ranging from the moderately active to the serious, competitive athlete. Therapists use deep, invigorating massage techniques to enhance the performance of athletes at athletic events or prior to weight training.

Spas

The most common places you will find massage therapists are in spas. Although spas seem relaxing for the client, that is not always the case for massage therapists as it can be a fast-paced environment. Working in spas allows for many types of massage techniques to be utilized depending on the client’s needs. Some places will offer set schedules while others are based off an appointment.

Healthcare

The need for massage therapists within healthcare environments is consistently growing. Whether it is in hospitals or rehabilitation centers, patients can heal much quicker through massages. Working in this environment is different than most settings because you are working with a team to treat patients. Self-employment options are limited when working in healthcare.

Although there are so many different environments in which a massage therapist can work in, the ultimate goal for all is to heal their clients. Our Massage Therapy Program allows you to choose your classes based off of preference and convenience, so that you can learn and practice the techniques you enjoy most.

Our fall schedule has been released, see what courses we are offering at each of our locations here.

Morning Routine: 5 Great Ways to Start Your Day

Most people can agree that mornings can be hectic from the moment you open your eyes. With so many things to do, we often find ourselves with not enough time to get it all done. The days can feel overwhelming before they have even started.

But don’t be discouraged; you have the power to transform your day from chaotic to productive through healthy morning habits.

Our Holistic Health Practitioner Program  trains students to connect the mind, body, and soul to build a healthy lifestyle. The courses included in this program provide insight on practices that will bring balance to your body. Implementing morning methods such as these helps our students promote overall wellness to their clients.

Here’s how you can start the day with a boost to your energy and mentality:

Stretch

A morning stretch can do wonders for your mind and body. Stretching improves posture, boosts energy levels, and reduces muscle tension.  A couple of minutes of this can ease strained muscles and get the blood flowing to your brain, preparing your day mentally and physically. Get yourself moving right away to enhance your productivity.

Make Your Bed

There’s a reason mom always told you to make your bed!  After a long day at work, a messy space is the last thing you should come home to. Don’t end the day as hectic as it began. Start small by making your bed the moment you wake up. As simple as this task sounds, it may bring you the most beneficial outlook on the day ahead of you. Making your bed will de-clutter your resting space and decrease your stress levels.

Set Goals

Incorporating mindfulness into your daily life is something we encourage all of our students to do at Healing Hands. One way to do this is by determining your attitude for the day through setting goals. Daily goals give us the ambition to get our work done and feel good about it. Take some time before you go to bed to think of your goals for the next day. Waking up with those objectives in mind will bring motivation to any aspect of your life.

Fuel Yourself

Is breakfast really the most important meal of the day? Yes! Your body is like a machine- the better you take care of it, the better it will function. Be kind to it by eating healthy, energizing food in the morning. Give yourself a boost by incorporating foods like Greek yogurt and bananas into your morning meal.

Soak up Sunlight

If you are like most of us, you spend a good chunk of your day indoors. Take a moment to go outside and embrace the natural sunlight and fresh air your body craves. That vitamin D can do wonders for you.  Try this by choosing to set your phone aside and drink your morning coffee in your backyard instead of your kitchen. Just a couple minutes in nature will ease your worries and bring clarity you need to crush the day.

Creating a holistic lifestyle starts with little steps like these. You will notice a positive transformation once you begin to make mindful decisions about your health and wellness.

How Massage Therapy Training Boosts Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence

“Self-confidence and self-esteem aren’t qualities we’re born with” said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands)- Laguna Hills.  “The belief that you are good and worthy of respect from others (self-esteem), and a belief in your ability to meet challenges (self-confidence) is an ongoing process. Fortunately, much can be done to change both for the better. Below is a list of concrete ways our Massage Therapy Training Programs help students gain a sense of competence, enhances their self-image and boosts their self-confidence”, she added.

Promote Health- Be Excellent to Yourself!  As a leader of education in the Holistic Healing Arts, Healing Hands is in the business of advocating for whole health, mind, body and Spirit.  By educating students about Anatomy, Physiology, Massage, and Body-work techniques, Healing Hands’ Instructors empower them to facilitate healing and promote optimal health for themselves and clients.  Through lecture, demonstration, and lots of individual guidance, Healing Hands Instructors help students develop a sense of competency.

Try something New!  Sometimes the familiar path gets a little too comfortable and we can fall into a mindless routine.  Learning a new skill, like Massage Therapy can be invigorating.  Learning massage with a group of like-minded people can make you feel alive and enthusiastic again.  Knowing how to provide immediate therapeutic relief from stress, pain and injury is a skill Students can be proud of.  Massage Therapists experience a a gratifying sense of purpose. Professional pride and a sense of purpose boost self-confidence.

Move Your Body!  The physiological effects of joint movement, muscle exercises, whole-body stretching, Tai Chi and Yoga practice are  beneficial at any age.  Regular workouts boost your sense of well-being. They also contribute to self-esteem as you feel a sense of accomplishment. Students can count on getting plenty of exercise at Healing Hands.  In addition to the full-body work-out they get when giving a massage, all class includes an instructor led, full-body warm-up segment.

Celebrate All Successes!  Rather than wait to celebrate only big successes, acknowledging small accomplishments can be very satisfying, reaffirming and prepare you for even greater challenges.  At Healing Hands, our Instructors provide the guidance that allows students to master basic skills before progressing to those more challenging.  By encouraging students to build on their successes, students move beyond their comfort zones, gaining confidence in the process.

Groom Yourself and Dress for Success!  These are two strategies that can instantly, enhance your self-image, boost confidence and brighten your mood.  Taking time to groom yourself and address your personal hygiene is a must for all Massage Therapists in training. Working closely with others, requires conscientious attention to their breath, body-odor, hair-style, nails, and cleanliness/neatness of their clothes and over-all appearance.

Healing Hands has been serving residents in SoCal for over 26 years.  Boasting more than 80 Massage and Holistic Health courses and two Certification Programs, Healing Hands has prepared more than 7,000 students for rewarding careers. What Meditation Can Do For Your Overall Health

While there are countless ways to promote your health and wellness, people often overlook the importance of meditation. If there is one thing you should be doing daily to remain healthy and happy, it is meditation. The power of your mindset depicts your outlook on life. So why aren’t we trying harder to train our ways of thinking through meditation?

One of our main priorities at Healing Hands is teaching our students how to maintain a balanced and healthy life. An essential piece of this balance is a healthy mind. We teach meditation practices to our students so they can create mindfulness for themselves. Because this type of practice can influence one’s life so heavily in a positive way, they are shown the importance of meditation in their courses and are encouraged to practice outside of the classroom.

We believe meditation has the ability to heal your mind, body, and soul- here are a few reasons how:

Reduce Your Anxiety

Anxiety is no simple struggle, and everyone experiences it in some manner. It leaves our minds and bodies feeling chaotic, confused, and exhausted. One of the best ways to eliminate this feeling is through meditation. Mindful practices will give you the ability to control your thoughts, even in ways as simple as breathing. By activating and training the area in your brain that regulates your thinking and emotions, the feelings of worry begin to diminish. Let yourself truly live in the moment by meditating to feel your anxiety fade away.

Elevate Your Mood

You may believe the only way to get those “feel-good” chemicals in your body flowing is through exercise, but that’s not the case. Meditation practices increase the levels of serotonin and endorphins in your brain, leaving you feeling happier than you began. It allows you to transform your mindset in order to get rid of those negative emotions, giving you more room for lasting positivity in your life. Once you tune into this way of thinking, you’ll notice your ability to make rational decisions will become easier, and you will be happier.

Gain Self Control

Do you ever feel as if you have no willpower? Meditation might be a good way to retrain that! It activates your anterior cingulate and prefrontal cortex; which are the parts of your brain that are connected to self-control. Disciplining your mental weaknesses requires practice, and meditation is the perfect way to train your brain. Meditating will give you the strength to resist those negative thoughts or temptations you may be facing.

Decrease Your Stress

Meditation lowers the amount of Cortisol- the stress hormone- in your body. If you ever feel that the pressures you are facing are too much to cope with, allow meditation to clear up space in your mind. This will give you the opportunity to prioritize your tasks and calm your nerves. Being able to organize your thoughts through self-reflection practices will bring clarity and peace. If you want to discover more ways to reduce your daily stress, check out this blog post

When you begin to put your walls down and let healing energy in, you will notice a positive shift in your mood and thoughts. Meditation is something everyone should incorporate into their lifestyle, and it’s so easy to start! You will be surprised at how just a simple 5-minute practice can enhance your life.

Our Holistic Health Practitioner Program trains students to recognize the connection between the body, mind, and soul through practices such as meditation. Learn more about this program here.

Massage Therapist Instructor, Denise Fultz, Promotes Benefits of Reflexology

We couldn’t be happier for Staff Instructor, Denise Fultz, whose article “Reflexology” was recently featured in the Spring 2018 Issue of California Current” said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands).  Denise is a dear friend and a talented, multi-subject Instructor who has been with us for more than 20 years.  To have her expertise recognized by the American Massage Therapy Association, is well-earned honor and an occasion to celebrate.  Congratulations Denise! Thank you for your dedication, and for your advocacy of the Holistic Healing Arts“, she added.

The article Paula is referring to shares a brief history about Reflexology and specifics about how it works.  It outlines the general health benefits of the modality, like its effectiveness in reducing tension and inducing relaxation. Denise also shares anecdotal stories of her experiences using Reflexology in class, with students as well as with Hospice and Palliative Care patients.

Reflexology’s goal is to remove energy blockages in our body’s system, increasing circulation and re-establishing homeostasis (a state of balance within the body/mind).  It can be used as an integrative therapy, stand-alone therapy, and as an effective technique to soothe anxious clients.

Known to diminish pain and speed healing in areas that cannot be directly manipulated, it’s effective for treating broken bones, cancers, Organ and digestive disorders to name a few.  To read Denise’s full Reflexology article, click here (http://ca.wp.amtamassage.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/55/2018/06/Final-California-Currents-Spring-2018.pdf

A Certified Massage Therapist and talented Practitioner, while teaching for Healing Hands, Denise also worked as a Massage and Energy Therapist for Hospice in San Diego.  There, she was credited with developing, organizing and directing the first Massage Therapy Program for Hospice patients. Her team of Professional Massage Therapists provided therapeutic massage and natural therapies to enhance patient care and comfort. The Program was so well received, it inspired Denise to author her first book; “Comfort Care: Natural Symptom Solutions for Palliative and Hospice Care, which she hopes to publish next year.

The seven classes Denise teaches for Healing Hands include:  Homeopathic First Aid, Anatomy for Bodyworkers, Geriatric Massage, Circulatory Massage, Tui Na (Acupressure), Manual Lymph Drainage, and Reflexology.  To learn more about Denise, visit her website: www.InnerWellness.org, or E-mail her at  denisehhp@cox.net.  For bookings, or to speak with Denise directly call 760-594-2473.

Holistic Massage School Shares the Benefits of ‘Sun Salutation’ for Aspiring Massage Therapists

As a school of Massage and the Holistic Healing Arts, the Instructors at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands) consider exercise as an essential holistic practice.  In fact, most of the 80+ classes include an exercise segment designed to warm up the student’s muscles in preparation for delivering Massage.  These segments may include Tai Chi, Yoga, Chi Gong, Therapeutic Stretching, and a variety of “flow” movement sequences.

“Our bodies work best when in motion”, said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands – Laguna Hills. “It only takes about 30 minutes of continuous exercise daily to make a substantial impact on our long-term health.  Below is a 12-step Yoga flow series known as “Sun Salutation”. Practicing this flow daily increases the fluidity of the body’s fascia (gel like substance that surrounds body structures) which lubricates joints and facilitates greater range of motion. A strength exercise as well, it prompts the body to build muscle, so it’s a great way to get your daily dose of exercise”, she added.

(Photo Credit – ‘The Monday Campaigns’, backed by John Hopkins, Columbia and Syracuse Universities, that dedicate the first day of every week to health.)

The Sun Salutation, as the translation indicates, is a gesture of respect to the Sun.  Today’s practitioners often dedicate each round of this flow series to something they are grateful for. Many claim it uplifts their Spirit and mood.  Additional physiological benefits of Sun Salutation include:

  1. It lengthens and tones your muscles
  2. It immediately Increase your energy level
  3. It increases lymph movement which cleanses and repairs body tissue
  4. It increases our respiratory function, exercising our heart and lungs
  5. It increases blood circulation which delivers oxygen and nutrients to our muscles and organs
  6. It helps stabilize blood sugar and blood pressure
  7. Is a way to experience moving meditation, which enhance emotional wellbeing
  8. It focuses you on the positive so you start your day centered and grateful
