Holistic Massage School Shares Five Strategies for Grocery Shopping for Optimal Nutrition

“We all know that food ordered at a local Diner or Buffet can be filled with empty calories and ingredients that aren’t always the healthiest” said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health – Laguna Hills (Healing Hands).  “By selecting and cooking your own meals, you are empowered to take charge of your nutritional intake which is essential to Holistic Health”, she continued.

According to researchers in Australia who examined the habits of 1, 136 women, food shoppers who made a habit of planning meals made better shopping decisions.  The evidence showed that those who pre-planned and shopped with grocery lists ate more healthfully than those who did not.  Shopping choices for these women included more fruits, vegetables and healthier product options. The study also found that approaching grocery shopping as a holistic practice to nurture yourself (and your family) as opposed to a chore, made a huge difference.

To ensure that your next trip to the grocery store is one you’ll look forward to, the Faculty at Healing Hands has put together five ‘Insider Tips’.  These tips will help you navigate grocery stores and find the best products, so you receive the best return for your nutritional dollar.

Tip #1 – Even those of us who do read labels acknowledge they can be extremely confusing. Fortunately, experts say that as a rule, the fewer the ingredients listed on the label, the healthier the food.  So, the best option is to select the product with the shortest list of ingredients.

Tip #2 – Observe your product’s positioning on the shelf.  Be aware that the big food companies pay “slotting fees” to position their products on the shelves at eye level.  The tactic usually leaves the top and bottom shelves open for healthier, more natural alternatives.   So, be prepared to look high and low for the most nutritious options.

Tip #3 –Shop the circumference of the store to find foods with the best nutritional values.  In most grocery stores, the healthiest food items can be found along the walls, rather than within internal isles.  Fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and fresh meat, poultry and seafood can all be found around the edges of the store. Typically, nutritionally less potent, processed food items are moved to the inner isles, and often can be avoided all together.

Tip #4 – Remember the Nutrition Pyramid and be sure to include your daily requirement of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and low-fat protein sources when planning meals and creating a shopping list.  The Pyramid model does not take into account dietary restrictions of all individuals, so learning what YOUR individual needs are, is equally important.  Having healthy selections readily available can keep your blood sugar balanced and curb unhealthy food cravings and impulsive eating.

Tip #5 –  Beware of deceptive marketing tactics. Many conglomerate companies use words that sound healthy to ‘spin’ the description of their food product.  For example, the term ‘Whole grains’ ensures the product has not been refined and stripped of most of its nutritional value.  The term ‘Multi-grain’ on the other hand, is deceptive as it may or may not have been refined, so it offers no guarantee of its nutritional value.  Learning differences such as these can help you avoid consuming foods with empty calories.

Healing Hands School: Building Careers and Lifelong Relationships

We pride ourselves on our dedicated staff, which average many years with our schools. Their passion for massage and holistic healing resonates not only with our team but also with the students that enroll at Healing Hands School. Some of our staff members were our students once upon a time!

We want to share a post with you that Pilar Chandler posted on her Instagram recently.

Chandler posted her Teacher of the Year honor from April 2011 with this note, “Found this today… sweet memories! I taught massage therapy at Healing Hands School for about 10 years! Right before I left on sabbatical, they awarded me teach of the year! I fell in love with the school the day I walked in. I sat down in the classroom and then made it a part of my life for the next decade! It was such a wonderful environment for growth and learning and healing, (I am) forever grateful for my time and experiences there. I found my calling and my voice and so much more!”

We couldn’t have been more touched by Pilar’s words.

Paul Curtiss responded, “Awww, Pilar it was wonderful to teach you, then to watch you become a teacher, and now to think of how many you have touched. Your healing work is an inspiration to all of us!”

Tera Ratinoff then shared her experience, “I finished my Holistic Healing Practitioner over eight years ago, and she’s still my favorite teacher.”

Michal Ettinger also shared her sentiments, “A special school indeed. And you were definitely worth of teacher of the year.”

Jess Dyrenforth, ART, HHP, shared her experiences with Healing Hands School and Pilar Chandler. “You were my sports massage teacher. So grateful to have had the experience, and tap into your vast knowledge.”

The common thing is that we all had a love for holistic healing. What is also important is that we walked away with these lasting friendships.

People come to our school searching for a better way to give back to the universe, and we are fortunate to guide these people through the techniques and to help set them up for a successful and enriching career in massage therapy and holistic healing.

Are you considering a career change? Are you looking to start a new life with a new purpose? We can help.

We help students every day with financial aid options to cover the costs of tuition. Once they’ve completed the coursework, we can help place them with some of the top spas and massage therapy practices in Southern California.

Thank you, Pilar, for celebrating your honor and your passion for what you do.

Holistic Massage School Offers Memorial Day Special for Veterans and Military Members

“San Diego County is known for having the largest percentage of Veterans in California”, said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health.  “This year, in addition to honoring those who lost their lives, we want to recognize all Veterans and Active Service Members for their service and sacrifice.  Toward that end, Healing Hands will be offering complimentary, one-hour Massages to Service Members who present a U.S. Military ID at any of our three SoCal locations”, she continued.

Healing Hands’, “We’ve Got Your Back!” Memorial Day special will run Tuesday, May 29th and Wednesday, May 30th at all three Healing Hands’ Student Massage Clinics.  Veterans may call to schedule their free massage during the school’s office hours which are 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM Mondays through Fridays.  (See contact info in the closing paragraph below.)

Paula’s appreciation for Military members is nothing new to the Faculty and Students at Healing Hands. Aware that massage can be of significant value in treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, (PTSD), affecting close to 50% of Vets returning from war zones, Paula created a Community Internship Program.  The Program has given students opportunity to provide therapeutic massage to Veterans at Recuperative Care Centers, Wounded Warrior Clinics, Stand Down events and Resident Facilities for more than 25 years.

Veteran Student at Healing Hands School

The symptoms of PTSD include feelings of hyper-arousal, high-anxiety, digestive disorders, super-vigilance and insomnia.  These symptoms are experienced when Cortisol levels (stress hormones) are elevated for extended periods of time. Massage therapies like Circulatory Massage and Deep Tissue have been found to substantially reduce Cortisol levels and associated symptoms.  In addition, studies found that Massage also increases Serotonin and Dopamine (good feeling hormones) levels.  Higher levels increase one’s feelings of well-being, reduce feelings of anxiety, and relieve Insomnia.  Massage Therapists help to facilitate the neuro-chemical changes that allow our body’s healing systems and processes to kick in.

Healing Hands students take pride in serving U.S. Veterans, and it shows.  Many Veterans on the receiving end of our students’ therapeutic massages became interested in learning massage themselves.  In addition to fulfilling a growing demand for therapeutic massage in our communities, we discovered that Veteran/Graduates are uniquely qualified to work with service men and women still suffering from the demands of their military service.

Veterans interested in a career as a Professional Massage Therapist can count on Healing Hands for the best Massage Therapy and Holistic Health training available!  Approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education, Healing Hands is authorized to accept Veterans Benefits (Title IX and Post 9/11, chapter 30, 31, 33, and 35), on behalf of Military Service Members who qualify.  All that’s needed is for the Veteran/applicant to submit a Certificate of Eligibility when enrolling.

Healing Hands boasts two nationally accredited Certification Programs, 80+ Massage and Holistic Health courses, plus an unrivaled number of career placement opportunities, which gives YOU the competitive edge!  At Healing Hands, you can begin a rewarding career as a Professional Massage Therapist in less than 1 year. Holistic Massage School Celebrates ‘Correct Posture Month’ and Shares How Posture Causes Pain

“Did you know, more than 540 million people worldwide suffer from back pain”, asked Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health – Laguna Hills (Healing Hands). As a school of Holistic Health, we have a responsibility to educate students about how posture  dramatically impacts their health.  By teaching Students actionable measures to strengthen their own posture, they in turn help raise awareness among clients in our communities, she continued.

According to the Faculty at Healing Hands, strong posture is the key to moving with grace, ease and confidence.  It is also key to avoiding pain and injury.  In fact, studies  show that focused exercise (for posture correction) combined with mindful meditation reduce pain and improve range of motion better than medications.  More importantly, holistic strategies achieved desired results more frequently and with fewer negative health consequences.

May begins a month of campaigns that unite thousands of Therapists, Doctors, Physical Trainers and Health Educators.  Intent on addressing the mind/body consequences of poor posture, they recommend the A-C-E posture model, developed by Dr. Steven Weiniger.  An Internationally renown Posture Specialist, Dr. Weiniger encourages people to consider how their posture affects their overall health by emphasizing Awareness, Control and Environment.

Awareness is best accomplished by taking photos of yourself standing face forward to the camera and then in side-view.  While most individuals ‘feel’ they are standing tall, a picture can help them recognize areas of weakness. These weaknesses can undermine how the body functions and contribute to muscle strain causing joint pain, limiting range of motion, and negatively impact our overall sense of wellness.

Control refers to the actionable strategies one can implement to increase strong posture.  These include therapeutic stretches, postural practices, massage therapies, Chiropractic adjustments, physio-therapies, strengthening exercises as well as increased activity levels.    Strong posture is the key to moving with ease and confidence while avoiding pain and injury. Studies also show that focused exercise and mindful meditation can reduce pain and improve movement better than pain medications and with far less negative health consequences.

Environment, or the creation of a posture-smart environment, refers to optimizing your home, work, play and sleeping environment to align each of your 4 posture zones.  These zones include your head, which should be centered over your body, and the alignment of your torso, pelvis and legs.

Posture studies show that when integrated, these strategies can speed healing of injuries, relieve pain, restore musculo-skeletal balance, elevate mood, increase alertness, boost energy, and enhance one’s self-esteem.  Conversely by allowing your bad posture to continue, one may experience increased pain which can lead to depression and contributes to headaches, lack of energy and a feeling of being drained and uninspired.

At Healing Hands, students are given the choice of a variety of posture enhancing courses, such as Therapeutic Stretching, Principals of Structural Integration, Neuro-muscular Therapies and Somatics to name a few.  To learn more about Healing Hands and the 80+ Massage and Holistic Health classes offered, go online to www.HealingHandsSchool.com or call us at (858) 505-1100 in San Diego, (760) 746-9364 in Escondido, or (949) 305-2722 in Laguna Hills.

What is a circulatory massage – and what are the benefits?

Massage therapy has many various techniques that promote wellness and improved lifestyles. There are many different strokes and techniques that all deliver diverse results.

While it isn’t the first phrase that pops into people’s heads when they think of massage therapy, circulatory massage is one of the most common healing methods used to help restore proper blood flow to the bodies muscles.

Originally developed and perfected in Sweden, this specific massage helps relieve stress from the body and muscles, and can help improve a person’s overall mental and physical health. Using a variation of five different strokes, this therapeutic massage involves applying pressure (medium to deep), tension, vibration or motion to the different parts of the body either with hand, arms or electronic massage devices.

When applied with expertise, this massage technique has several benefits. It not only helps by increasing oxygen to flow to the bloodstream and relaxing tense muscles, but also expelling harmful toxins from the body by boosting the lymphatic system’s ability to cleanse lactic acid, uric acid, and metabolic waste. This results in better bodily function and can lower blood pressure.

If someone also suffers from chronic headaches, mobility issues, or joint pain (such as osteoarthritis) these massages can improve or resolve these issues long-term (with regular treatment).

Combined with the right diet and an exercise routine tailored to meet your needs, a circulatory massage can yield potentially life-changing results! With stress reduction and the ability to soothe sore muscles or painful joints, the benefits of circulatory massage can help almost anyone more fully enjoy their lives – and you can learn the skills necessary to empower the lives of others through the power of massage therapy!

Healing Hands School offers hands-on classes and instruction on circulatory massages as a part of our comprehensive massage therapy education. If you’re seeking to open a new career path in massage therapy, learning the five strokes and care involved in circulatory massage will serve as laying the foundation in a lasting career helping others.

Laying the foundation in Eastern Massage Therapy: Tui Na Acupressure Massage

Fine-tuned from over 5,000 years of practice and application in China, Tui Na is an intensive holistic method of massage therapy that can help treat a variety of conditions.

About Tui Na

Using a combination of healing herbs, ointments, heat application, acupuncture, and finger/hand massage strokes both relaxed and energized those it treats. The primary benefit of Tui Na massage is that it concentrates on the specific problem areas – whether it may be a sharp or a chronic pain located in the joints or locked in tense muscles. This technique is extremely beneficial for reducing aches and pains associated with neck and shoulders, hips, back, and ankle disorders. It is a very effective therapy for anyone suffering from arthritis, sciatica, or muscle spasms.

Tui Na Benefits

The most beneficial advantage of Tui Na is that it focuses on maintaining overall balance with both mental and physical health. Anyone who wishes to bypass any drug side effects or chemical-based treatments may do so by adopting this effective and holistic massage technique to alleviate their pain.

Tui Na VS. Western Massage

While Tui Na may be the form of Eastern massage that is the most similar in technique to Western massage (as both emphasize the kneading of muscles to rid the body of toxins), there are a few drastic differences that separate them. However, Tui Na, like most Eastern forms of massage and healing, tend to be more “rigorous” than Western, addressing specific concerns via diagnosis.

Meanwhile, Western massage uses more broad strokes and focuses on relieving tension and stress throughout the entire body as a whole and tends to have a medium pressure intensity (as compared to Tu Na’s more vigorous technique).

However, don’t let the variety and differences between the two confuse you – both methods of massage therapy can help benefit anyone! It all depends on the individual’s needs.

Where to learn Tui Na

Healing Hands School provides hands-on classes in Tui Na with instructors who have implemented this extremely effective healing technique in the field. Learning the skills to help others through Tui Na’s focused methods not only empowers you but can access new career opportunities for anyone seeking a new path in massage therapy!

Holistic Massage School Offers Exceptional Course in Reflexology

“An effective holistic health practice that goes well with most massage modalities, Reflexology treatments are deeply relaxing and therapeutic”, said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, (Healing Hands).   “When integrated into each therapeutic massage session, Reflexology allows students to positively impact their clients’ endocrine, immune, circulatory, respiratory, and neuropeptide systems.  Our 30-hour course will be offered on Sundays starting May 27th, from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM, so mark your calendar!”,   she added.

Reflexology is a form of touch therapy that involves the Practitioner stimulating various pressure points on the feet and hands to promote health and healing.  The course is taught by Staff Instructor Denise Fultz, who combines lecture, demonstration and hands-on practice to familiarize students with reflex points and techniques for their manipulation.  Students learn which reflex points relate to specific organs, glands and other systems of the body, so they can customize client treatments.  The modality has been shown to improve a variety of common ailments including Plantar Fasciitis, Stress, Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Anxiety and various digestive disorders.

“Remembering the exact location of reflex points has always been the biggest challenge for Reflexology students”, said Denise.  Toward that end, co-faculty member Raina Colvin and I developed a Reflexology Chart for students to use as a quick-reference.  The unique, hand-painted chart includes a stand-up design, shows the underlay of bones in the foot, and displays the orientation of the feet and hands as they would appear during a treatment.Reflexology charts can be purchases at any Healing Hands Bookstore or online at Denise’s website: www.InnerWellness.org, To purchase multiple copies please email your request to:  denisehhp@cox.net or call her at 760-594-2473.

Denise Fultz is a Certified Massage Therapist, Holistic Health Practitioner, Public Speaker, and multi-subject Instructor for Healing Hands.  A gifted Practitioner and Instructor, Denise has been a valued member of the Faculty for over 20 years and currently teaches a total of seven classes. These include: Homeopathic First Aid, Anatomy for Bodyworkers, Geriatric Massage, Circulatory Massage, Tui Na, Manual Lymph Drainage, and of course, this 32-hour Reflexology course.

In addition to Denise’s many contributions at Healing Hands, Denise is an aspiring Author in the process of writing her first book.  The book,  “Compassionate Care” is designed as a ‘How to’ guide for families and caregivers of terminally ill patients.  The book will provide a wealth of information about natural therapies and holistic remedies to support and comfort individuals going through the dying process.

Holistic Massage School Students Share – How Sound Makes Art!

“It’s nearing the end of the Winter Semester at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, which means it’s time for students of our Anatomy for Bodyworkers class to take their finals and give their last, live team presentation” said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands – Laguna Hills.  “Our Anatomy class presentations are often the high-light for student practitioners.  It gives them an opportunity to show-case newly acquired knowledge in a creative, fun and interactive way.  In addition to team building, these group presentations provide students with an excellent public speaking opportunity which further develops their self-confidence and professionalism” she added.

This semester’s Anatomy for Bodyworkers class at the Laguna Hills campus, was taught by Staff Instructors Denise Fultz and Shaunna Avila-McClure. Students were separated into five groups and tasked with creating a group presentation on each of the five human senses.

One of the students’ presentations on ‘Hearing’ incorporated all the basics on how the human ear receives, and processes sound, then introduced an especially interesting pictures and new concepts.  One such concept came from a You-Tube video that demonstrated how vibration and frequency organize matter into geometric forms.

The ‘Resonance Experiment’ as students named it, showed the surface of a speaker topped with fine grains of sand.  As music played through it, its sound resonance vibrates.  As a result, the areas of maximum and minimum displacement are made visible, creating exquisite geometric shapes.  Different patterns emerged depending on the frequency of the sound.

The photos on the left show just a few of the geometric shapes resulting from the vibration and resonance of sound.

You can learn everything you need to know about Anatomy and the body’s five senses at Healing Hands. Considered a trail-blazer for Holistic Health education in Southern California, Healing Hands has a reputation for excellence among Massage Therapist employers in the SoCal area.
