Massage School Students are Nutty about Holistic Nutrition!

At Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands), our Faculty understands the importance of good nutrition and offers several classes on the topic.  Among these is Holistic Nutrition, taught by multi-course Instructor, Shana Lipner-Grover.   “The Holistic approach to health-care means taking all aspects of a person’s life into account when assessing their overall health”, said Shana.  “These include the physical, psychological, social, and Spiritual.  This course highlights how food provides the energy we need to move our bodies, and the nutrients essential for its growth, maintenance and repair.  If you want a positive attitude, healthy muscles and bones, and an abundance of energy, it is essential to understand Holistic Nutrition”, she added.

The goal of Holistic Nutrition is to help Students create healthy nutritional plans to build a strong foundation for long term health and wellness.  Students can use these plans for themselves, their families and their clients. In Shana’s course, students examine the basic nutrients in food including: vitamins, carbohydrates, fatty acids, enzymes, and amino acids. They explores how the energy of food ingested affects our own energy, and how food choices can impact the mind/body connection and over-all health. Students study the Digestive System and gain an understanding of how food is processed and utilized within the body. The course also includes the preparation and sharing of delicious, healthy recipes.  Upon completion Students will be equipped with the knowledge to customize the optimal nutrition program for themselves and their clients.

Holistic Nutrition is a 60-hour course that Shana teaches at all three Healing Hands classroom locations.  Her next course will be held at the Escondido campus (125 W Mission Ave #212) from 6pm to 10pm starting August 24th and running through October 12th.  The Registration deadline for Holistic Nutrition is August 10, 2018.

Aromatherapy Healing: Essential Oils and Their Effects

While we specialize in the art of massage therapy and healing techniques with our hands, we teach and embrace wellness from a holistic approach.  The sense of smell is a strong tool that can do a lot to energize and reinvigorate our minds, spirits, and bodies Whether you are looking for a better night’s sleep, or just need to unwind from a stressful day, aromatherapy is a natural and effective way to soothe your soul.

Essential oils have been used all over the world for thousands of years because of the healing properties they provide us. By extracting the components from plants, oils contain a variety of restorative features.

Here are some different types of essential oils and their benefits:

Lavender

There’s a reason why this scent is one of the most popular of them all. Although lavender has multiple purposes, it is most commonly used to relax. The calming scent it produces is beneficial to those suffering from anxiety or trouble sleeping. Aside from relieving stress, it also can aid in healing skin wounds and burns.

Eucalyptus

This oil is great for treating colds and congestion. Its antibacterial properties allow for aid in respiratory issues. Adding it to a bath can clear your mind and your airways all at once. Try using eucalyptus in your home as a cleaning product as well. This multi-purpose cleaner will leave your home smelling naturally fresh with no toxins.

Tea Tree

Tea tree provides antiseptic properties that can heal a variety of skin issues. Use this oil to help fight acne, soothe dry cuticles, or reduce inflammation from conditions like psoriasis or eczema. You can also treat skin infections and cuts with tea tree.

Lemon

The look of lemon is as bright as its benefits. Revitalizing and energy boosting, lemon helps promote mindfulness to keep you focused. This acidic fruit also can be used as a detoxifier, just add a couple of drops to your water in the morning for a natural cleanse.

Chamomile

Commonly seen in tea, chamomile’s sweet scent can replace your feelings of anger and disappointment with relaxation and positivity. The physical benefits are just as useful, as this oil adequately reduces pain. Whether you have headaches or muscle pain, you can use chamomile to relieve your suffering.

These natural remedies can provide relief in all aspects of your life. Utilizing essential oils can help you eliminate the use of medication and toxic products while promoting a more balanced and healthy lifestyle.

Aromatherapy is just one of the many classes we teach at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health. This course explores how 30 different essential oils can affect us on physical, emotional, and energetic levels. Class discussions include the history of Aromatherapy; intrinsic oil qualities; extraction and blending techniques; plus safe and effective consulting practices that are in accordance with high ethical standards. Through lecture, demonstration and hands-on experience students learn how to formulate and use essential oil blends to treat a variety of disorders and stress-related problems for their clients.

Holistic Massage School Applauds ‘Food Is Medicine’ Initiative for Californians

Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, (Healing Hands), commends the efforts of California State Senator, Ben Allen and Assembly members, Richard Bloom and Blanca Rubio”, said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director. “On Friday, May 4, they initiated a pilot Program named: “Food is Medicine” to deliver free meals to Medi-Cal recipients in need of a specific diet to manage their medical condition.  As a school of the Holistic Healing Arts, we’re extremely pleased that California Doctors are now recognizing and prescribing food as Medicine”, she continued.

The Food is Medicine initiative was based off recent research published by MANNA, a non-profit organization that delivers nourishing food to chronically ill people in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The study revealed that customized meals reduced the number of patient trips to the hospital and the need for long term care after a hospital stay, by 23%.  These meals not only enhanced patient quality of life, they facilitated a major reduction in hospital costs as well.

Customized meals are being distributed by the Food is Medicine Coalition, comprised of dozens of nutrition service providers, like MANNA.  These providers are dedicated to providing nutritional services to individuals with serious and/or chronic illnesses within their communities.  The Coalition also promotes nutrition education, research on health outcomes, and research on cost of care for individuals receiving medically customized meals.

Medically customized meals are designed by a Registered dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and reflect proven nutritional guidelines for specific medical conditions.  Factors taken into consideration during meal creation include the patient’s illness, medications, allergies and tolerances.  Patients with cancer for example, are instructed to eat high-calorie meals.  Patients with Diabetes, on the other hand, need meals low in sugar and processed carbs.  Individuals suffering from cardiovascular disease require low cholesterol & low sodium diets. Though requirements may differ, one thing’s for sure, what a patient eats has a major impact on their mood, and health outcomes.

The Faculty at Healing Hands believes that while customized nutrition may be key to improving outcomes for those struggling with disease, holistic nutrition is key to preventing it in the first place!  Accordingly, the school offers an exceptionally popular course, ‘Holistic Nutrition, taught by Herbal Medicine and Nutrition Educator, Shana Lipner-Grover. Holistic Nutrition starts August 24th at the Escondido campus (Register by Aug. 10th). In Shana’s class, students examine the basic nutrients in food and how they affect the mind and body. Students are introduced to healthy recipes and develop a customized nutrition plan.  What students learn in ‘Holistic Nutrition’ helps them build a strong foundation for their own and their clients’ long-term health.

A trail-blazer for Massage and Holistic Health education in SoCal, Healing Hands has prepared more than 7,000 Graduates for success as Professional Massage Therapist and Holistic Health Practitioners. Holistic Massage School Shares Five Strategies for Grocery Shopping for Optimal Nutrition

“We all know that food ordered at a local Diner or Buffet can be filled with empty calories and ingredients that aren’t always the healthiest” said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health – Laguna Hills (Healing Hands).  “By selecting and cooking your own meals, you are empowered to take charge of your nutritional intake which is essential to Holistic Health”, she continued.

According to researchers in Australia who examined the habits of 1, 136 women, food shoppers who made a habit of planning meals made better shopping decisions.  The evidence showed that those who pre-planned and shopped with grocery lists ate more healthfully than those who did not.  Shopping choices for these women included more fruits, vegetables and healthier product options. The study also found that approaching grocery shopping as a holistic practice to nurture yourself (and your family) as opposed to a chore, made a huge difference.

To ensure that your next trip to the grocery store is one you’ll look forward to, the Faculty at Healing Hands has put together five ‘Insider Tips’.  These tips will help you navigate grocery stores and find the best products, so you receive the best return for your nutritional dollar.

Tip #1 – Even those of us who do read labels acknowledge they can be extremely confusing. Fortunately, experts say that as a rule, the fewer the ingredients listed on the label, the healthier the food.  So, the best option is to select the product with the shortest list of ingredients.

Tip #2 – Observe your product’s positioning on the shelf.  Be aware that the big food companies pay “slotting fees” to position their products on the shelves at eye level.  The tactic usually leaves the top and bottom shelves open for healthier, more natural alternatives.   So, be prepared to look high and low for the most nutritious options.

Tip #3 –Shop the circumference of the store to find foods with the best nutritional values.  In most grocery stores, the healthiest food items can be found along the walls, rather than within internal isles.  Fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and fresh meat, poultry and seafood can all be found around the edges of the store. Typically, nutritionally less potent, processed food items are moved to the inner isles, and often can be avoided all together.

Tip #4 – Remember the Nutrition Pyramid and be sure to include your daily requirement of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and low-fat protein sources when planning meals and creating a shopping list.  The Pyramid model does not take into account dietary restrictions of all individuals, so learning what YOUR individual needs are, is equally important.  Having healthy selections readily available can keep your blood sugar balanced and curb unhealthy food cravings and impulsive eating.

Tip #5 –  Beware of deceptive marketing tactics. Many conglomerate companies use words that sound healthy to ‘spin’ the description of their food product.  For example, the term ‘Whole grains’ ensures the product has not been refined and stripped of most of its nutritional value.  The term ‘Multi-grain’ on the other hand, is deceptive as it may or may not have been refined, so it offers no guarantee of its nutritional value.  Learning differences such as these can help you avoid consuming foods with empty calories.

  • Maximize Your Schedule: Personal Trainers that provide therapeutic Massage and stretching, are much more likely to keep their schedules filled and avoid “wait” time between clients.
  • Avoiding Job Burnout: Being able to alternate between Personal Training and Massage will give the Trainer more variety, breaking up the monotony that can lead to job burnout.
  • Increase Your Sense of Purpose: Your desire to contribute to a healthier lifestyle for others through Personal Training is meaningful, altruistic endeavor. By adding Therapeutic Massage and holistic self-care to your “tool belt”, you can make a greater contribution, thus fortifying your Sense of Purpose.

Holistic Massage School Students Enjoy Holistic Living Retreat

Every year during Easter weekend, Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, (Healing Hands) offers a Holistic Living Retreat to students, said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands– Laguna Hills. Hosted by school Founders, Paula and Neha Curtiss, the Retreat offers students the opportunity to retreat from the demands of daily life and affords time for introspection.  Taking a holistic approach to life, health and healing requires seeing ourselves as an integrated whole; mind, body and Spirit. This Retreat helps to facilitate that goal. All Healing Hands students and Alumni are welcome and encouraged to bring their friends and family”, she added.

The Holistic Living Retreat ran from 9am on Saturday, March 31st through 4pm on Sunday, April 1st, 2018 and was attended by over 60 guests.  Dozens of Students gathered in a beautiful, privately owned and undeveloped Canyon in the San Diego area. Without the modern conveniences of home, students were immersed in nature, enjoyed nutritious meals, slept under the stars, and experienced two days of fun, learning, and personal growth.

Throughout the weekend, Paula, Neha and Staff engaged students in a variety of holistic practices. These included Yoga, Tai Chi, Breath Therapy and Meditation.  Creative and self-expressive activities like singing, playing musical instruments, tie-dying, beadwork, and crafting were also encouraged.  The goal of the weekend was to help students experience the peace and well-being that comes from living a balanced, health-conscious life.

For some students, Healing Hands Holistic Retreat served as an opportunity to get away from the demands of daily living and gain clarity about their challenges, or life’s purpose.  For others it was more about connecting with like-minded people, sharing experiences and feelings and nurturing a sense of belonging.  Regardless of the student’s motivation, those who enrolled in this course came away with 20 educational credits and a renewed appreciation for the serenity of nature.

Energetic Bodywork: Healing Your Body, Healing Your Mind

energetic bodyworkIn every season of life, we encounter days where we feel less energized, less motivated, and more stressed. Instead of giving yourself a hard time about feeling this way, remind yourself that these symptoms are a sign that your mind and body are in need of a simple rejuvenation. When we’re relaxed and stress-free, we are able to restore our natural ability to heal which, in turn, enables us to fight off health-related issues. Not only does this positive energy aid our health, but it also manifests itself as confidence and outward harmony in dealing with everyday events.

Energetic Bodywork, previously known as Energywork for Bodyworkers, is a hands-on body/mind therapy that addresses healing on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. It helps clear any mental or physical roadblocks you may be experiencing. These disruptions in your “life force energy” can lead to critical emotional or health problems if left untended. Whether this imbalance is caused by an emotional situation, physical trauma, or negative thoughts and feelings (worry, doubt, anger, anxiety), energy healing treatments help relieve these emotions by reducing stress and promoting relaxation. This triggers the body’s natural healing abilities and improves and maintains your overall health.

The healing benefits from this type of treatment can be dramatic, but are often quite subtle and tend to show up later – after the healing session is long over. Often the “results” happen at the level that will provide the most profound benefits. For example, the main benefit of a healing session might come in the form of an insight or change in attitude that results in a change of behavior that leads to a long-lasting improvement in physical health, emotional health, and/or quality of life.

In our Energetic Bodywork course, students learn how physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual blockages can affect the human energy field. Discussions include how the ‘health’ of this field relates to the potential for disease within the body. Students will also learn energetic grounding techniques and discover their unique way of receiving information energetically. Through a deeper understanding of the emotional and spiritual aspects of healing, the student greatly enhances their perception skills often differentiating themselves from less sensitive body-workers. The skills learned in Energetic Bodywork enable our students to create better health and balance for their clients as well as themselves.
