Yoga Therapy: Relaxing The Mind, Healing The Body

Just like any other language, you have to learn what your body is saying. It speaks to you on a daily basis, but you have to be willing to hear what it’s trying to tell you. If your body is telling you that it’s in need of a little extra TLC, always listen and pursue a holistic healing method, like yoga therapy, which can increase your health.

Yoga Therapy is an adaptation of yoga techniques and practices that are personalized to help individuals with specific health challenges. It uses yoga postures, breathing exercises, meditation, and guided imagery to improve mental and physical health. The holistic focus of yoga therapy encourages the integration of mind, body, and spirit.

Here are two ways it can help get your health back on track:

Mental Relaxation

When your mind is calm and free, your body will follow suit. Yoga therapy allows you to slow down and take note of the present moment. Whether you’re focused on your breath or healing a part of your body, this type of holistic treatment can help reduce anxiety, depression and even Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Allowing yourself to heal your mind is generally the first step in healing your body.

Physical Rehabilitation

Yoga therapy can often resemble physical therapy. Its yoga techniques are utilized in the delivery of the massage in order to bring a healing and soothing aspect to the rehabilitation process. These techniques teach you to relax, breathe, and de-stress. Just by doing one yoga therapy session, you’ll begin to notice a big difference in how your body operates. If you maintain a steady practice of this form of yoga, you’ll be able to feel improvements in your organ functions, digestion, and nervous system. Unlike standard yoga classes, yoga therapy sessions are typically conducted in one-on-one or small group settings. Yoga therapy can be paired with other forms of therapy, or it can be used to directly treat a specific issue.

Our introductory Yoga Therapy class will address topics that you can take and use as tools for your massage or personal yoga practice. It will include yoga sequences, meditation techniques and breathe-work for various ailments. We will explore how certain poses can create space between the vertebrae, within the joints, and around the internal organs; other poses feel like they lift the heart and open space between the neck and shoulders. By improving circulation and reducing muscle tension, Yoga Therapy can become a valuable addition to any therapist’s practice.

Aromatherapy: Holistic Healing Of The Mind, Body, And Soul

“Without inner peace, outer peace is impossible.” – Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

Stress has, unfortunately, become a common denominator in many people’s lives but it doesn’t have to be. When you realize that stress only has power if you give it power then you will have opened your world to a whole new set of possibilities. One of the best ways to help your mind see this perspective is by utilizing aromatherapy practices.

Aromatherapy is a holistic therapy that uses essential oils from plants to positively affect an individual’s mental, physical and spiritual well-being. When inhaled or applied to the skin, essential oils have proven to help people overcome a variety of health problems with their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory medicinal properties. For over 5,000 years, aromatherapy has been a trusted practice among cultures all over the world. However, while aromatherapy can help improve your physical health, it can also make a large impact on your mental health as well. Some of the most common reasons that people use aromatherapy are to help improve sleep quality, reduce stress, and overcome depression.

Oftentimes, aromatherapy involves diffusing a combination of essential oils into the air in order to provide a relaxing atmosphere for an individual. Depending on the individual’s preferences though, it can also be inhaled through the nose, soaked in an oil-infused bath, or used as an oil during a massage. By combining massage therapy and aromatherapy, you’ll experience the most rewarding and euphoric feeling that will heal both the mind and body. You’ll notice that your stress levels will have lowered, your mind will feel clearer, and your body will feel lighter and rejuvenated.

Our aromatherapy course explores how 30 different essential oils can affect us on physical, emotional and energetic levels. Class discussions will include the history of aromatherapy, intrinsic oil qualities, extraction and blending techniques, and safe consulting practices. Through lecture, demonstration and hands-on experience students will learn how to formulate and use essential oil blends to treat a variety of disorders and stress-related problems for their clients.

Holistic Massage School Shares… Why Laughter Heals

“Did you know, infants begin smiling within their first few weeks of life and begin laughing just months after birth” says Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health in Laguna Hills.  “Innate to the human Spirit, laughing offers a wide range of holistic health benefits. Though medical doctors instinctively used humor to distract patients from pain for centuries, today there is measurable data that documents its therapeutic value.  Below is a list of just some of the research findings that support the belief that ‘Laughter IS the Best Medicine!”, she added.

  • A good laugh relaxes muscle tension throughout the body
  • Laughing increases oxygen intake and exercises the heart & lungs
  • Laughter has been found to improve sleep
  • Laughter triggers the release of the body’s natural pain-killers (Endorphins)
  • One cannot be anxious, angry or sad when laughing, therefore it naturally boosts our mood
  • Laughter helps us shift our perspective, allowing us to view situations differently
  • Laughter allows us to take ourselves less seriously and increases our self-compassion
  • Laughter produces a general sense of well-being and empowerment
  • Laughter promotes mental alertness
  • Laughter increases memory and creativity
  • Laughing can increase physical energy
  • When we laugh, we reduce stress-related hormones (Cortisol)
  • Laughter also has been found to boost the immune system
  • Laughter, and the stomach contractions it creates, can relieve stomach aches
  • Studies show laughter helps balance blood pressure
  • Laughter is contagious, and people enjoy being others who have a good sense of humor.

Laughing is an important holistic health practice that can help you to feel better about yourself and the world around you.  Just a few minutes of laughter daily can help you to relax and recharge, relieving pain while lifting our spirits, energy and mental capacities.  Best of all, laughter is available to all of us, at all times, and in almost any situation we may find ourselves.

Spring Cleaning: 3 Ways To Clear Your Mind & Set New Intentions

intention settingOne of the few things that are constant in this world is change and, much like the weather, we all go through various seasons of life. These ebbs and flows are what make us who we are and guide us down the path we were meant to take. In honor of this season of change – both in weather and in life – try these three techniques for clearing your mind and setting new intentions for the path ahead.

Yoga and Meditation

Even if you don’t realize it, your mind is constantly thinking about a multitude of things at once. Whether you’re worrying, planning, or stressing, your mental health can take a toll if you don’t provide it with the rest and relaxation it needs to function properly. By practicing yoga and meditation, you can help slow these thoughts down and learn to clear your mind of unnecessary noise. When your mind is still and at ease, you can access the peace that resides within you and channel that energy throughout your entire body. Breathing techniques are also a very important part of yoga and meditation. Since your breathing is directly linked to the state of your mind, you can create a large shift in your overall health when you learn how to control your breathing. For example, when your mind is happy and clear, your breath is long and easy, but when your mind is filled with anxious thoughts your breath becomes shorter and shallower. Whether you’re thinking about making a career change or a personal change, keeping your mind and body relaxed and in sync will help you have a clearer vision for the path you should pursue.

Positive Affirmations

How we speak to ourselves is just as important as how we speak to others. When we fill our mind with positive thoughts, we naturally become happier and more inspired. However, positive affirmations are much more than self-help statements. They can make a significant impact on the quality of your life and can help you be more in tune with your daily thoughts. Depending on where you are on your journey, it can be hard to practice self-encouragement. Start small by beginning each day with one positive thought. You’ll be surprised at how refreshing it will feel to begin the process and even more surprised at how quickly you’ll fall in love with it. Your mind, body, and soul will be thanking you every day.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is a non-invasive practice and is a powerful treatment that aids in healing the entire body. When you’re under a lot of stress, your body produces unhealthy levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, which creates adverse effects on your mental and physical health; anything from weight gain and sleep deprivation to digestive issues and headaches. However, a massage can prevent these negative reactions by drastically decreasing levels of stress and anxiety. When you receive a massage, your body is able to relax, recover, and rejuvenate. This also plays a role in lowering your diastolic and systolic blood pressure.

Whether you’d like to make an appointment to receive a massage or schedule a tour to have a hands-on experience with a potential new career path, Healing Hands is here to provide you with the support you need.

Holistic Massage School Offers Exceptional Career Path for Veterans & Their Spouses

Did you know… Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), is a debilitating psychiatric disorder that affects 30 to 50 percent of US Veterans who spent time in a war zone”, asked Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health.  “Until recently, treatments for the disorder were limited to psychotherapy and medication, so recuperation was often slow at best.  Fortunately, today’s medical technologies make it possible to measure biochemical changes following different therapies.  Multiple studies revealed that even a 1-hour therapeutic massage session was enough to reduce many of the primary symptoms of PTSD, so we want to spread the word”, she added.

The symptoms of PTSD include: chronic muscle tension, irritability, physical pain, anxiety, hyper-vigilance, insomnia, and depression.  Studies performed at Touch Institute at the University of Miami revealed that “Biochemical changes from therapeutic massage include: an increase in Serotonin and Dopamine, which increase feelings of well-being, reduce feelings of anxiety and relieve involuntarily contracted muscles that cause pain and range of motion issues.  Studies also showed that therapeutic massage decreases Cortisol levels (stress hormones) which reduces the feeling of hyper-arousal and super-vigilance which contribute to another common symptom, Insomnia.

While an education in Massage Therapies and the Holistic Healing Arts can greatly enhance emotional and physical recovery for Veterans, it also provides an exceptional career-path for Veterans in transition.  A financially viable choice, Veterans often choose Massage Therapy to support themselves while they travel, explore their passions, or pursue a higher education.

As a Veteran and Professional Massage Therapist you’ll be uniquely qualified to specialize in Massage for Veterans and become a Healer for life in the process. Imagine how rewarding it could be to positively impact the lives of those you served beside.  In addition to providing physical pain relief you’ll help to restore the Veteran’s most fundamental needs of safety, trust, optimism, belonging, and self-love.

Recognized by the Dept. of Education, Healing Hands is authorized to receive VA Benefits (Title ix and Post 9/11) and My CAA (for spouses of Military personnel) funding on behalf of qualifying students.  As part of Healing Hands on going Internship Programs, our student/volunteers provide free massage to Vets at Job Fairs, Recuperative Care Centers, Wounded Warrior Clinics, Stand-Down Events and other commemorative occasions. As a result, they have inspired countless Veterans to enroll in our Massage Therapist or Holistic Health Practitioner Program. With starting salaries for Massage Therapists ranging from $25 to $40 an hour and the top 10% earning $80K + annually, Healing Hands offers an exceptional career path for transitioning Veterans and their Spouses.

Energetic Bodywork: Healing Your Body, Healing Your Mind

energetic bodyworkIn every season of life, we encounter days where we feel less energized, less motivated, and more stressed. Instead of giving yourself a hard time about feeling this way, remind yourself that these symptoms are a sign that your mind and body are in need of a simple rejuvenation. When we’re relaxed and stress-free, we are able to restore our natural ability to heal which, in turn, enables us to fight off health-related issues. Not only does this positive energy aid our health, but it also manifests itself as confidence and outward harmony in dealing with everyday events.

Energetic Bodywork, previously known as Energywork for Bodyworkers, is a hands-on body/mind therapy that addresses healing on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. It helps clear any mental or physical roadblocks you may be experiencing. These disruptions in your “life force energy” can lead to critical emotional or health problems if left untended. Whether this imbalance is caused by an emotional situation, physical trauma, or negative thoughts and feelings (worry, doubt, anger, anxiety), energy healing treatments help relieve these emotions by reducing stress and promoting relaxation. This triggers the body’s natural healing abilities and improves and maintains your overall health.

The healing benefits from this type of treatment can be dramatic, but are often quite subtle and tend to show up later – after the healing session is long over. Often the “results” happen at the level that will provide the most profound benefits. For example, the main benefit of a healing session might come in the form of an insight or change in attitude that results in a change of behavior that leads to a long-lasting improvement in physical health, emotional health, and/or quality of life.

In our Energetic Bodywork course, students learn how physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual blockages can affect the human energy field. Discussions include how the ‘health’ of this field relates to the potential for disease within the body. Students will also learn energetic grounding techniques and discover their unique way of receiving information energetically. Through a deeper understanding of the emotional and spiritual aspects of healing, the student greatly enhances their perception skills often differentiating themselves from less sensitive body-workers. The skills learned in Energetic Bodywork enable our students to create better health and balance for their clients as well as themselves.

Swedish Massage: Increasing Circulation, Decreasing Pain

massage therapy Sometimes our bodies need a little extra TLC. From long work commutes to playing sports, our muscles and joints experience wear and tear in a variety of ways. To keep your muscles healthy and free of tension, you’ll want to regularly treat yourself to a Swedish massage.

This type of treatment is among the most commonly requested massages in spas. It’s the perfect way for anyone who is overworked and stressed out to relax his or her mind and body. A Swedish massage is performed in a soothing environment where the therapist lubricates the skin with massage oil or lotion and performs various massage strokes. These movements warm up the muscle tissue and gradually break up muscle “knots,” called adhesions. In order to achieve this, the technique that is used for this type of massage is very focused on muscle relaxation by targeting superficial muscles – rather than the connective tissues targeted in deep-tissue massages. While the strokes of the massage relax individual muscles, the overall experience eliminates mental stress. In turn, this helps reduce/eliminate tension headaches, increase energy levels, and allows you to get a better night’s sleep.

Since many of the massage’s movements also involve stroking the hands toward the heart, it naturally increases blood flow and drains toxins from the limbs of your body. This means that your muscles are getting more nutrients and oxygen and that your body is removing toxins more efficiently. This benefit is what makes a Swedish massage good for treating minor, sports-related injuries. It soothes and alleviates the inflamed area and increasing blood flow to that particular spot of your body.

Our circulatory massage class involves learning the technique of performing a Swedish massage. It involves lubricating the skin with massage oil and performing a variety of strokes to increase circulation and smooth muscle knots. Through lecture, group discussion, and supervised hands-on practice this course teaches students how to give a full- body Swedish-style massage. Techniques learned include gliding (Effleurage), kneading (Petrissage), and cross-fiber friction (Fanning). Special focus is given to the body’s anatomy, and proper body mechanics used by professionals. Also, students will learn “draping” techniques for assuring their client’s privacy. By the end of this course, the student will be able to deliver a full-body Swedish massage that promotes relaxation, lowers blood pressure, detoxifies the system, relieves pain and facilitates many other health benefits.

Deep Tissue Manipulation: Getting To The Root Of An Injury

When we’re not obviously in pain, we’re often unaware of the small ways we’re injuring ourselves over time. From looking at screens to doing physical labor, our body goes through a lot of strain throughout the day. These small “injuries” can lead to scar tissue adhesions accumulating in your muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. When this problem goes unaddressed, the result is pain, discomfort, and lack of mobility.

To remedy this, a deep tissue manipulation, or deep tissue massage, invigorates and manipulates the deep layers of tissue within the body, including the fascia and other supportive tissue that make up the muscles and joints. Compared to other massage techniques — such as the Swedish massage or acupressure, which tend to be lighter in pressure and can involve moving the body into certain positions — deep tissue massage is generally slower and firmer. This is due to deep tissue massages being meant for therapy and rehabilitation as opposed to relaxation.

Due to the intense nature of this massage, some pain may be experienced. However, as long as the pain isn’t unbearable, remember that this is a sign that your injury is being taken care of at the core. The pain can also be from the massage’s movements against the muscles rather than moving with them. The benefits of deep tissue massages include dramatic improvement in your posture, flexibility, range of motion, and energy level, while at the same time providing relief from tension, aches, pains and stiffness.

In our Deep Tissue Manipulation course, students will discover the Deep Tissue techniques of Muscle Sculpting and Structural Organization as pioneered by Ida Rolf. Students will learn how to manipulate “fascia” (the collagen web-like network that permeates the entire body) to create more balance (as it relates to gravity) and ease of movement in the body. This work requires client participation, and special emphasis is given to the mind-body connection. Students are taught effective communication skills to facilitate the emotional awareness associated with this kind of deep bodywork.

Three Benefits of Sports Massage Therapy

sports massage LA marathonPhysical exercise is essential for keeping your body happy and healthy. However, if you’re an athlete who is working out more than the average person, your body undergoes an immense amount of stress. To keep your body in peak condition all year round, consider investing in sports massage therapy sessions. These soothing yet effective massages will provide you with these three main benefits:

Alleviate Muscle Tension

Heavily exercised muscles tend to lose their capacity to relax. This causes chronically tight muscles and loss of flexibility, which predisposes athletes to injuries; especially muscle pulls and tears. Since blood flow through tight muscles is very poor, excess pain can occur in the athlete’s injury. Since massage therapists can specifically target tender or tight areas, the pain is alleviated much quicker than if you left it untreated. When pressure and massage techniques are applied to an injured area, it signals the mind and body to relax and increases your overall range of motion.

Stress and Pain Reduction

Part of the alleviation that someone experiences during a massage is due to the release of endorphins. Endorphins are morphine-like chemicals produced by the body that help diminish pain while triggering positive feelings. They’re often referred to as the brain’s “feel-good” chemicals and are the body’s natural painkillers. These help decrease anxiety, provide pain relief, improve your mood, and enhance a person’s state of well-being. Whether an athlete receives a pre or post-event massage, this euphoric state of mind benefits them in both situations.

Improve Recovery

When an athlete is injured, it’s a tremendous setback for their career. However, massage therapy sessions can speed up their recovery time by increasing circulation to injured muscles, which helps eliminate toxic debris and enables the muscle to have a healthy healing process.

Our Advanced Circulatory Massage class introduces students to new ways of using their thumbs, fingers, and palms as well as their elbows and knuckles, taking Circulatory Massage to new healing heights. The Sports Massage portion of the class teaches techniques to treat a variety of clients ranging from the moderately active to the serious, competitive athlete. We also provide our students with knowledge about deep, invigorating massage techniques to enhance the performance of athletes at athletic events or prior to weight training. Special focus is given to cross-fiber techniques that release old adhesions and scar tissue thereby promoting better performance and faster healing. This class equips the student with a whole new range of Massage techniques that enhance their bodywork and its impact on their clients.
