Our Community of Healers

Becoming a student at Healing Hands is more than receiving a certification in massage therapy or holistic health. One of the unique aspects of our school is the community support behind every student. Even though your journey with us begins when you enroll, it does not end when you graduate.

Working in massage therapy means you heal others. At our school, we believe the best way to heal is through compassion and support. In order for our students to successfully heal their clients, they must experience healing themselves first. We take a holistic approach to our teachings so that our students can have a comprehensive learning experience that not only benefits their careers but their souls as well.

We provide our students with resources and experiences that further develop their knowledge and passion for holistic healing:

In Nature

Every year a two-day holistic living retreat is held for all students and alumni to attend. This event reminds the student that living a balanced and health-conscious life can foster a powerful state of well-being.

This retreat gives students the opportunity to unwind, rejuvenate and reconnect with nature and a community of like-minded Healers. This popular, Springtime retreat takes place in a beautiful natural setting located in the heart of an undeveloped canyon complete with fresh- water creek. With no modern conveniences to distract them, students are immersed in outdoor, holistic living.

Online

Beyond the courses and exams, Healing Hands is online. Our active community on platforms such as Facebook gives our alumni and friends the chance to network from anywhere in the world. For those who have graduated from our school and have gone on to their dream careers, this is a great place for them to keep up with us.

“This program changed my life and the community this school has created has meant everything to me. They are there for you every step of the way to becoming a Massage Therapist which is no walk in the park.” – Mihaela Nedejde, Laguna Hills Alumni. We are constantly receiving support from old and new students.

Beyond Schooling

Because of the tight-knit group of healers we have established, opportunities for jobs are abundant. The support from our alumni is a continuous journey as people are constantly offering job opportunities for anyone interested.

The relationships we have cultivated with our partners has given our students the opportunity for successful job placements. After years of building great relationships with these businesses, we have been able to give our students the chance to work in different environments and help them evaluate what practices are best for them. Spas and healing facilities all around Southern California are filled with past Healing Hands students.

We encourage our students to dig deep into their own healing to understand how to heal others through the support of everyone around them. By modeling a more holistic approach to life, students help their clients re-discover their own innate power and ability for self-healing.

If you want to begin a new career with the love and care of a supportive community, schedule a tour at one of our three locations.

Holistic Massage School – Fall Schedule Newsletter

Hello Healers,

In Fall’s magnificent abundance, we explore concepts of grace. What it is to be graceful? What it is to be grateful? We ask each student, each healer, at the beginning of every healing session, take a breath. Inhale this exquisite knowledge: by allowing you to practice the craft of massage therapy on their body, your client, your fellow student, your friend, your loved one, has given you the most sublime gift a person can give another. Trust. They trust you. Inhale this trust. When you exhale, exhale gratitude for this most wonderful gift. The gift they give you by allowing you to work with them.

When we hear the term ‘by grace of God’, we take that to mean that God is being generous to us. Gracias, graceful, grateful, gracious, is to be appreciative, to be thankful. When a person is graceful, they are at ease. They are pleasant to be with, easy on the eye, at ease in the world.

We thank you, the students, the teachers, the staff and all the helpers that make Healing Hands School happen. We thank the core instructors who gracefully blend the very best of inspiration, academics, body awareness, and class room structure. This ensures the students’ experience will accomplish the goal of learning a new skill, while the student simultaneously experiences receiving healing the student is seeking to facilitate in others.

Let us also recognize that for students to be in the classroom, our office angels diligently guide the student. From their first contact with Healing Hands, the perspective student is graciously welcomed. Over the next year, we advise on how to schedule their life, how to fund their tuition, how to schedule their family. The office angels help the student feel at ease before they have taken their first class and through out their time with us. How to help if the student gets sick? How to help Veterans receive the benefits they paid into? How to combine funding sources the students are entitled to? One of Healing Hands’ unique qualities is our office angels are, or were, Healing Hands students. We deeply know the students experience and are committed to gracefully guiding the student through the process to accomplish their goal of becoming professional healers.

Some of the many Fall courses we are grateful for include two new courses, two offered by a mentor and master, and two that bring us connection to the community around us. Claudia Baben presents ‘Table Thai’ which transfers some of the matt work of Thai Massage, to working on a massage table. Claudia also teaches the new course ‘Yoga Massage’. Learn to apply Yoga positioning and breathing techniques to release tension and open the recipient to greater flexibility and functionality. Talk about graceful! Guest instructor and author, Seymour Koblin, will lead us in Zen Touch and Body Reading.

In school Director Paula Curtiss’ Community Service Internship Program, Paula meets with our group of interns each week to guide the internship process.   Students elect to do their Clinical hours with specific population groups in our community. We have student healers working with professional athletes, in the spa industry, with chiropractors, in Sharp Hospitals Integrative Medicine Program, in the Free Integrative Wellness events each Thursday at AltHealthNet. Our student healers work with the most compromised of humanity in several hospice care environments, in skilled nursing facilities, with veterans recuperating from hospitalization, and with people recovering from alcohol and drug use. Paula is proud of the generous nature of student healers and looks forward to working with you.

3 Reasons Pre-Natal Massage is Valuable

Pregnancy is a life-changing event that affects a woman’s physical body in many ways. Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, and relieve muscle aches and joint pain. This bodywork can also improve labor outcomes and newborn health through therapeutic movement.

Benefits of massage for pregnant women:

Decreased Stress and Anxiety

The journey of pregnancy is a beautiful process, but it can also be a stressful time. Especially for a first time mommy-to-be, anxious feelings of uncertainty can be overpowering and affect her health and that of the baby. Receiving massage during pregnancy not only affects the physical body, but the emotional health of the recipient as well. Massage therapy releases endorphins and helps reduce stress levels by soothing the nervous system. Therapeutic bodywork encourages relaxation by increasing levels of serotonin and dopamine, leaving both mom and baby feeling at ease.

Pain Relief

Most women experience different levels of pain during their nine months of pregnancy. As the baby grows and the body changes, women can experience discomfort in their muscles and joints. Massage therapy stretches the muscles and decreases the levels of discomfort as it allows for more movement in the body. This is a natural pain-reliever that even carries into labor and delivery.

Better Sleep

Sleep is crucial for the health of both mom and baby. Getting the right amount of rest every night before the baby comes is crucial, as many women get less sleep once the baby is born. Pre-natal massage promotes good quality sleep, which strengthens the immune system. This bodywork induces calm feelings, allowing the recipient to rest. Giving the body a break through massage therapy helps moms refocus and develop good sleeping habits.

Every pregnancy experience varies, but massage therapy can benefit all. The feelings pregnant women experience may transfer to the baby, so taking care of their physical and mental state will positively affect those nine months of constant change and growth.

Want to serve pregnant women in your practice?

Our class, Pre-Natal Massage, focuses on how to work with the rapidly changing female body during the nine months of pregnancy. In this course, students will be given guidelines for positioning the pregnant client, and learn how to address contraindicated areas. Through lecture, demonstration and lots of hands-on practice, students will gain the knowledge to facilitate a completely safe and deeply therapeutic pregnancy massage.

We strive to give our students the education and experience needed to heal any type of client. Explore our variety of courses here

Healing Hands: A Unique School Experience

Becoming a massage therapist at Healing Hands means more than practicing bodywork and learning anatomy. We strive to make your time with us meaningful as you join our community of healers.

As a student here, you will be supported in every way possible on your journey towards getting your certification.

Our support reaches beyond the classroom and into the personal lives of our students. The holistic compassion each instructor possesses reflects our devotion to each student discovering their potential as professional healers.

CFO and Co-Director, Paula, explains what a student can expect as a result of beginning their journey with us:

“So when you become certified as a Massage Therapist, you go out into the field, and you make a living doing a job you love.”

“Waking up in the morning and thinking ‘I wonder who I’m going to work on today. I wonder if it’s going to be a day where I’m going to have a lot of bad left knees to work on. That pregnant woman I worked on last week- I wonder how she’s feeling today.”

Massage therapists experience something different every time they work. No days are ever the same, which is what makes the career so exciting. By implementing genuine care for each patient, the job holds great meaning and value for each person.

Paula adds, “And you have that care for the job you’re doing, but it’s because you actually care for the people that you’re working on. And that really starts here. It starts by the care that a person coming to Healing Hands who’s just looking at us for the first time- we always want to take care of you.”

By showing compassion to our students, we hope that they can provide that same care for their clients.

“You are our customer; you’re our student –but we’re going to be with you for a year. You’re going to be experiencing what it’s like for fellow students to work on your body, as well as listening to what’s going on in your challenges in your life. Your instructors have many, many years of experience guiding you through what it’s going to be like to be a student here at Healing Hands.”

Healing Hands offers a unique experience for students, a holistic approach to learning.

“And we hope that when you leave the school, you never really leave. You continue to come back.”

Our Healing Hands community does not just include our current students, but also alumni that have been involved as far back as when the school began 20+ years ago.

The support you receive from instructors and peers does not stop when you graduate. We are constantly helping one another by posting job openings and any other opportunities that someone could benefit from. It’s a lifelong relationship that is special to only our school.

Ways To Relieve Your Daily Stress

Every day we are faced with challenges that bring on stress. Too much stress can take a toll on your physical and mental wellbeing. When these pressures become repetitive, we begin to experience some real problems.

Our students are trained to understand their client’s stress through assessments and clear communication. Dealing with an extensive amount of tension and worry can cause insomnia, muscle tension, a weakened immune system and more. Mentally, stress increases feelings of depression and anger along with a lack of motivation.

While there are so many reasons to be stressing out, we need to learn how to overcome those mental blocks in order to sustain a well-rounded and healthy lifestyle. We can achieve this by making small mindful changes throughout our day.

Begin the day with yourself.

Mornings can be a hassle when you already have a long to-do list in your head the minute you wake up. Before you begin your hectic day, set the tone by taking 5-10 minutes to yourself. Try to think about circumstances in which you are thankful. Practicing gratitude can put your worries into perspective, helping you realize how small they actually are. Incorporating positive thinking will establish your mood and start you off feeling good.

De-clutter your space.

Waking up to a messy room affects your mindset more than you may think. Whether you begin in your house or at the office; cleaning the clutter in your physical spaces will help clear the clutter in your mind. Having an organized space to work or relax in gives your brain a break from focusing on too many things at once.

Drink water.

Hydration is one of the most important factors in having a healthy lifestyle. Not drinking enough water causes us not to think clearly and makes us feel drained. The amount of daily water intake depends on each person. But generally speaking, women should be drinking around 12 cups a day, while men need about 16 cups. Water will help give you the clarity and energy you need to thrive during your day.

Focus on one task at a time.

Many times when we find ourselves stressed out it is because we have too many tasks on our plate and not enough time in the day to complete them. Bring your attention to one need and let everything else go. Once that task is done, you can switch your attention to the next. Worrying about multiple duties at once serves no purpose other than stress. There will always be more to do, don’t let that cloud your mindset.

By creating small, healthy habits you can include in your life; you will see a noticeable difference in your mentality. Taking the time to practice positive thinking will help you see and feel better. Our Massage Therapy Program educates students on how to relieve stress in ways our clients cannot do on their own. Holistic Massage School Students Share – How Sound Makes Art!

“It’s nearing the end of the Winter Semester at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health, which means it’s time for students of our Anatomy for Bodyworkers class to take their finals and give their last, live team presentation” said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands – Laguna Hills.  “Our Anatomy class presentations are often the high-light for student practitioners.  It gives them an opportunity to show-case newly acquired knowledge in a creative, fun and interactive way.  In addition to team building, these group presentations provide students with an excellent public speaking opportunity which further develops their self-confidence and professionalism” she added.

This semester’s Anatomy for Bodyworkers class at the Laguna Hills campus, was taught by Staff Instructors Denise Fultz and Shaunna Avila-McClure. Students were separated into five groups and tasked with creating a group presentation on each of the five human senses.

One of the students’ presentations on ‘Hearing’ incorporated all the basics on how the human ear receives, and processes sound, then introduced an especially interesting pictures and new concepts.  One such concept came from a You-Tube video that demonstrated how vibration and frequency organize matter into geometric forms.

The ‘Resonance Experiment’ as students named it, showed the surface of a speaker topped with fine grains of sand.  As music played through it, its sound resonance vibrates.  As a result, the areas of maximum and minimum displacement are made visible, creating exquisite geometric shapes.  Different patterns emerged depending on the frequency of the sound.

The photos on the left show just a few of the geometric shapes resulting from the vibration and resonance of sound.

You can learn everything you need to know about Anatomy and the body’s five senses at Healing Hands. Considered a trail-blazer for Holistic Health education in Southern California, Healing Hands has a reputation for excellence among Massage Therapist employers in the SoCal area. To date, the school’s top-notch Faculty has prepared more than 7,000 students for successful careers in Massage Therapy and can do the same for you!

As I approach the top of the stairway at the entrance of Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands), I announce, “Hello,  my name’s Andrea, I’m here for a Massage in the Student Clinic.  The pretty young woman I’m looking at smiles, walks towards me and extends her hand warmly, “Hello I’m Heidi, I’ll be your Massage Therapist today”, she said.

After shaking hands, she invites me to sit down, reaches for a clipboard with a two-sided form, and politely asks for me to complete the front side.  The form asks for my name and any health conditions I have that may be contraindicated for therapeutic massage. Once completed, she leads me into one of two private Massage Therapy treatment rooms, closes the door and a brief discussion ensues. “Where are you holding tension in your body… are there specific areas of your body you would like me to focus on today….”, Heidi asked.  I relayed my problem areas as she listened carefully, then she excused herself so I could undress and get on the massage table.

Get your Buy One Get One Free Massage!!!

Moments later, I hear a tap at the door and Heidi’s soft voice asking if I’m ready. I reply yes, she enters the room and the lights are dimmed as soft Spa music begins playing.  Heidi arranges and smoothes the sheet and blankets covering me, then starts palpating my shoulders, neck, back, thighs, etc.  I feel her applying soft compressions and stretches across my entire back to loosen things up before taking aim at my right shoulder.

I can feel Heidi’s pressure adjusting intuitively as it encounters taught muscles, allowing my body a chance to respond to her touch rather than repel it.  I can tell she already has a good understanding of Anatomy as evidenced by her ability to follow a line of tension and feel her way around my body.  Her pace is slow and steady as she methodically moves down my neck and back applying the perfect pressure and following through to the end of each muscle or muscle group.

About 20 minutes into the massage now, I find my need to chat diminishing as my mind starts to unwind in response to Heidi’s therapeutic touch.  She’s moved on to my legs, and I’m feeling muscle tightness I didn’t know I had.  As I focus on her touch, I become increasingly conscious of all bodily sensations.   The softness of her palms, the release of tension from a specific muscle, the urge to take deep breaths and long exhalations in concert with Heidi’s muscle work…releasing layers and layers of tension, and lulling me into a deep sense of relaxation.

I’m 40 minutes into the massage now and drifting into that ‘in-between awake and sleep’ state…feeling more relaxed than I have in weeks.  Her steady, rhythmic strokes are releasing tension in my arms and shoulders now…. and I’m feeling a sense of gratitude for her kindness and expertise.  Just when I think it can’t get any better, I feel her soothing the tight muscles in my neck and then those that run across my head.  Wow, I’m always amazed by how much tension my head can hold!

Ultimately, that dreaded soft touch on the shoulders came… and Heidi leaned over and in a gentle Spa voice informed me …”Well  Andrea, thank you for receiving for me today. I hope I have restored some rejuvenation to your body.  Here is a cup of water before you get up.  Thanks for the valuable feedback. I’ll step out of the room to allow you some privacy while you get dressed and meet you back outside”, she then turned and quietly left the room.

I lay there dazed, feeling all the benefits of relaxation and the release of positive neuro-chemicals in my brain and body.  As I rise from the table I’m feeling completely relaxed, my body feeling lighter, pain-free, nurtured, grateful and happy! Heidi greets me as I leave the Massage Room,  graciously accepts my deluge of verbal appreciation, then  directs me to the desk where the clipboard and questionnaire await. I record my positive feedback on Heidi’s technical and interactive skills and hand Heidi a $20 tip, to underscore my appreciation.

Holistic Massage School Supports National Sleep Awareness Week

“Sleep is essential to feeling rested and refreshed, and is an crucial contributor to holistic wellness”, said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands) – Laguna Hills.  “The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report that “insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic conditions and diseases ranging from Obesity and Depression to Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease”. With more than 10% of our population experiencing Insomnia and over 25% falling short of the recommended 7 to 8 hours, we’re happy to educate students about natural, holistic remedies that can make all the difference!  In honor of National Sleep Awareness Week (March 11 to 17) we’re offering the followingWellness Reminder’ for our students, Alumni and our Healing Arts community”, she added.

HOLISTIC STRATEGIES TO GET THE SLEEP YOU NEED!

Use your body a couple hours before bed

(and Enjoy it’s Many Healthful Benefits)

Move Your Body! –Multiple clinical studies have confirmed what active folks have known for years, people who are physically active during the day fall asleep faster and experience a better quality of sleep than those who remain sedentary.  So, whether you choose a 30 minute nature walk, or a challenging 60minute Aerobics or Zumba class, getting your body moving every day is one of the best ways to ensure a better night’s sleep.  So get out and exercise, daily!

Reduce Your Intake of Caffeine – Avoid caffeine boosted energy or sports drinks, and coffee especially after 5pm.  Substitute herbal teas such as Siberian Ginseng, Chamomile, Hawthorne, or Passionflower, which are known to help the body relax.

Be comfortable!

Get Comfy – An old, uncomfortable bed or pillow can hinder a good night’s sleep so be sure your mattress isn’t too hard, soft or lumpy, and replace your pillows annually or as soon as they lose their shape.

Treat Your-self to a Therapeutic Massage – After just one hour of massage, the Cortisol (stress) hormones that keep us awake are reduced by 30-40%, while raising Serotonin by 30-40% which supports a better night’s sleep.  Effects of therapeutic massage have also been found to be cumulative, meaning that the more you receive massage, the more it can positively effects your mind/body.

Create a Nurturing Bed-Time Routine – Try sipping a cup of calming Herbal tea while relaxing in a hot bath with Epsom Salt to promote muscle relaxation.

Drink some relaxing tea!

Try Sleep-Friendly Herbs – Natural sleep aids like Valerian and Melatonin are available in most health food stores,  and pharmacies.  Taking 1-2 capsules of the sedative herb, Valerian, plus .3 mg of the sleep-regulating hormone Melatonin, a half hour before bedtime, has been used effectively to improve sleep for centuries.  And of course, always check with your doctor if you are unsure about an herb.

Learn and Use Relaxation Techniques – Bio-feedback, Yoga, Tai Chi and many forms of meditation are helpful in reducing stress and anxiety and promoting a better night’s sleep.

Holistic Massage School Hosts TuiNa (Acupressure) Public Day For Massage Enthusiasts

Welcome to Public Day!!!

“At Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands), our nationally accredited programs ensure students are given a strong foundation in Anatomy and physiology, plus access to a variety of massage modalities and complementary holistic health courses” said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director.  “Our 100 hour TuiNa (Acupressure) class teaches a massage modality based on Traditional Chinese Medicine. This modality involves stimulation of acupressure points to affect the flow and balance of “chi”, (life energy) through “meridians” or pathways in the body”, she explained.

On February 5th, Healing Hands Escondido campus hosted “TuiNa Public Day”,

Practicing the Tui Na Technique of Rolling

directed by Staff Instructor, Raina Colvin.  Public Day is part of Healing Hands student evaluation process and is mandatory for a passing grade in any massage class.  On TuiNa Public Day, students were required to perform TuiNa massage on several public volunteers tasked with evaluating the student’s therapeutic performance and communication skills.

In Raina’s class students learned dozens of manipulation techniques to move chi through ill and injured areas of the body where blockages tend to occur. They practiced specific treatments to address chronic pain and disorders of the spine and joints, such as Rotator Cuff problems of the shoulder or Sciatica which can send pain across the hip and down the leg. Through hands-on demonstration and hours of practice, students learned to  master oscillating techniques to increase energy, as well as the traditional compressions and pulls characteristic of Tui Na. Benefits of this traditional modality include:

  • Chair Massage basics

Increased blood flow thru the body.
  • Reduces muscle stiffness and pain.
  • The warming of stiff muscles, tendons & ligaments which greatly reduce the potential for injury.
  • Increases range of motion and flexibility.
  • Positively impacts the nervous system by reducing stress hormones (Cortisol) and increasing pleasure hormones (Endorphins).
  • Helps speed healing of injured muscles and body tissues.
  • Speeds muscle recovery from over-use.
  • Calms the nervous systems and encourages relaxation.
  • Improves circulation of blood and lymph flow to the massaged area.
