Massage School Students are Nutty about Holistic Nutrition!

At Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands), our Faculty understands the importance of good nutrition and offers several classes on the topic.  Among these is Holistic Nutrition, taught by multi-course Instructor, Shana Lipner-Grover.   “The Holistic approach to health-care means taking all aspects of a person’s life into account when assessing their overall health”, said Shana.  “These include the physical, psychological, social, and Spiritual.  This course highlights how food provides the energy we need to move our bodies, and the nutrients essential for its growth, maintenance and repair.  If you want a positive attitude, healthy muscles and bones, and an abundance of energy, it is essential to understand Holistic Nutrition”, she added.

The goal of Holistic Nutrition is to help Students create healthy nutritional plans to build a strong foundation for long term health and wellness.  Students can use these plans for themselves, their families and their clients. In Shana’s course, students examine the basic nutrients in food including: vitamins, carbohydrates, fatty acids, enzymes, and amino acids. They explores how the energy of food ingested affects our own energy, and how food choices can impact the mind/body connection and over-all health. Students study the Digestive System and gain an understanding of how food is processed and utilized within the body. The course also includes the preparation and sharing of delicious, healthy recipes.  Upon completion Students will be equipped with the knowledge to customize the optimal nutrition program for themselves and their clients.

Holistic Nutrition is a 60-hour course that Shana teaches at all three Healing Hands classroom locations.  Her next course will be held at the Escondido campus (125 W Mission Ave #212) from 6pm to 10pm starting August 24th and running through October 12th.  The Registration deadline for Holistic Nutrition is August 10, 2018.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES

Student/Graduates need to pass their licensing state exam [MBLEx] so they may enter the field as a Professional Massage Therapist. Professional Practices enhances students’ testing skills by discussing test anxiety, teaching effective study habits, sharing learning tools, and suggesting testing strategies to prepare Students for optimal performance on the exam.

The course also reviews the benefits and contraindications of massage.  It explores how to communicate compassionately yet firmly with clients.  Ethics, Laws, and appropriate Client/Therapist boundaries pertaining to Massage Therapy sessions will also be covered.  

Business topics this course addresses include: career development, budgeting/money management, Operations, Documentation and security issues. Students review clinical terminology as well as Anatomy, Kinesiology and various Pathologies ensuring their preparedness for the challenging MBLEx exam.

BODY-READING

Body-Reading is based on the Traditional Eastern Yin/Yang and 5 Element Models. This course teaches the Massage Therapist how to initiate a health assessment for their clients.  It focuses on the development of the student’s intuition.  Areas of the body to be ‘read’ include: the face, back, abdomen and body structure.  This modality also looks at clients’ birth dates, mannerisms, attitudes, and hands. 

Body reading facilitates the client’s understanding of themselves and deepens their vitality in health, relationships, and their life’s journey. Physical (food and breathing exercises), Emotional (using feelings for healing) and Spiritual (subconscious healing) methods are all integrated in this course.  Intuitive applications are developed with the various maps presented. The Practitioner’s use of these body reading maps can help guide clients toward the necessary steps to fulfill their greatest potential.

DYNAMIC CUPPING

Dynamic Cupping’s is centuries old, dating back to ancient Egyptian, African and Asian cultures.  It uses suction to increase circulation and soften myo-facial and muscular structures of the body. Traditional Asian cupping uses fire to create the suction.  Other styles use hand held pumps, rubber cups, and silicone cups. The course covers the basics, the benefits, and specific contraindications of this modality. Students learn a dynamic cupping protocol to add to existing body work sessions or use as a stand-alone treatment plan.

The skills learned in Dynamic Cupping include how to apply, remove, and incorporate movement to achieve desired outcomes.  Cupping effectively increases circulation, helps with the breakdown of adhesion and muscle knots, and supports relaxation.

Holistic Massage School Offers Inspiration for Positive Change- Create a Customized Wellness Plan and Enjoy Optimal Health

Exercise: Do I get regular exercise that is aerobic and improves my cardio-vascular health.  Do I participate in exercises that build strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination or balance? What types of exercises do I like best?  What am I willing to do to ensure my body’s physical health?

Self-Care: Do I value and care for myself proactively, or put everyone else’s needs before my own? Do I avoid ingesting toxins such as drugs, alcohol, and tobacco that can harm my health?  Do I receive regular medical check-ups and follow through with treatments?  Do I practice safe-sex? Do I monitor my body for warning signs of disease? Do I practice forgiveness of myself & others?

Relaxation: Do I use relaxation strategies like Yoga, Tai Chi, or Massage, to regularly combat stress, relax and balance my body/mind? Do I practice any forms of meditation to help quiet my mind? Do I have a safe and quite place I can go for refuge when needed?  How can I create a special, personal space for tranquility and relaxation?

Rest: Do I maintain a regular sleep and wake cycle to avoid insomnia?  Do I create a dark, comfortable and cool sleep environment where I can rest undisturbed?   Do I get an average of seven hours of sleep each night? Do I avoid caffeine, blue light (from electronics & TV), and other pre-bed-time agitators like personal confrontations or spicy late-night snacks?

Massage Therapist Instructor, Denise Fultz, Promotes Benefits of Reflexology

We couldn’t be happier for Staff Instructor, Denise Fultz, whose article “Reflexology” was recently featured in the Spring 2018 Issue of California Current” said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands).  Denise is a dear friend and a talented, multi-subject Instructor who has been with us for more than 20 years.  To have her expertise recognized by the American Massage Therapy Association, is well-earned honor and an occasion to celebrate.  Congratulations Denise! The article Paula is referring to shares a brief history about Reflexology and specifics about how it works.  It outlines the general health benefits of the modality, like its effectiveness in reducing tension and inducing relaxation. Denise also shares anecdotal stories of her experiences using Reflexology in class, with students as well as with Hospice and Palliative Care patients.

Reflexology’s goal is to remove energy blockages in our body’s system, increasing circulation and re-establishing homeostasis (a state of balance within the body/mind).  It can be used as an integrative therapy, stand-alone therapy, and as an effective technique to soothe anxious clients.

A Certified Massage Therapist and talented Practitioner, while teaching for Healing Hands, Denise also worked as a Massage and Energy Therapist for Hospice in San Diego.  There, she was credited with developing, organizing and directing the first Massage Therapy Program for Hospice patients. Holistic Massage School Shares the Benefits of ‘Sun Salutation’ for Aspiring Massage Therapists

As a school of Massage and the Holistic Healing Arts, the Instructors at Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands) consider exercise as an essential holistic practice.  In fact, most of the 80+ classes include an exercise segment designed to warm up the student’s muscles in preparation for delivering Massage.  These segments may include Tai Chi, Yoga, Chi Gong, Therapeutic Stretching, and a variety of “flow” movement sequences.

Holistic Massage School Celebrates International Men’s Health Week

“Led by the Men’s Health Network, International Men’s Health Week, June 11-17, was created to increase awareness of male health issues, and develop policies and health services that meet their specific needs on a global scale”, said Paula Curtiss, Founding Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health (Healing Hands).  “In support of these endeavors, we are asking all Healing Hands students to encourage the men in their life to be more proactive about their holistic health”, she added.

In support of International Men’s Week, Healing Hands Faculty offers the following self-care strategies for men.  By adopting these 8 holistic health strategies, men can reduce their risk of cardio-vascular and other chronic diseases that can shorten their lives.

Holistic Self-Care Strategies for Men

#1 – Practice Safe Sex!  With HIV/Aids and so many Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) out there, ie: HPV, preventing sexually transmitted diseases is an essential self-care activity for men. Using a condom can greatly reduce chances of getting or spreading a STD.  Other risk reducing strategies include: a reduction in sex partners, mutual monogamy, and Hepatitis B & HPV vaccinations. Get treatment immediately If you suspect you may have contracted an STD.

#2 – Know Your Health Numbers! Keep track of important numbers such as your Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar levels, LDL & LDH Cholesterol, and Body Mass Index (BMI).  If any of these numbers are higher than normal, speak with your doctor for suggested life-style changes.  

#3 – Tune in to How You Feel!  Be sure to get regular health check-ups and any medical screening tests you feel may be needed.  Tune in to yourself and notice signs and symptoms of disease such as: pain in the chest, arms, shoulder, neck, jaw, or back.  Notice if you experience excessive thirst, shortness of breath, feeling light-headed or faint.  If you experience any of these signs or symptoms, don’t wait; seek help from your doctor or neighborhood urgent care facility right away. 

#4 – Say Nighty Night!  Adult men need a minimum of 7 to 8 hours of sleep nightly.  Simple strategies to help men get the sleep they need include: turning off computers and electronic gadgets that emit sleep inhibiting blue-light; adhere to the same bed-time and morning wake schedules; keep the bedroom dark, quiet, and temperature controlled; and avoid large meals or exercise right before bed-time.

#5 – Reduce Stress! – A prolonged bout of stress affects your health as well as your emotional wellbeing.  To keep your worries in perspective and reduce stress, make it a point to take good care of yourself.  Eat well, get plenty of sleep, exercise, laugh, play, and treat yourself to a Therapeutic Massage regularly.  Just one hour of Massage can substantially reduce stress hormones and increase happy hormones positively impacting mood.  

#6 – Let’s Get Physical!  At a minimum, adult men need 2.5 hours of moderate to intense aerobic activity each week.  In addition, muscle strengthening activities two or more days a week will help maintain strong, healthy and flexible muscles and joints.  Regular exercise can substantially reduce the risk of chronic or cardio-vascular diseases that cut a man’s life-span short.  Just a ½ hour walk daily can reduce one’s risk of obesity by 50 % and positively impact one’s physical health and sense of emotional wellbeing. 

#7 – Eat to Thrive!  A healthy diet is one that provides essential nutrients and contains food from all the basic food groups.  There should be a balance between calories-eaten with calories-burned, so daily activity is key to keeping your weight low.  You should also limit high sugar food items or those that are high in salt, fat, alcohol and calories.  Best choices are fresh, un-processed foods such as green leafy vegetables, whole grain products, colorful fruits, and lean protein such as Chicken, Fish, or Pork. Holistic Massage School Shares The History of Holistic Massage and Bodywork Therapies

Why are Massage and Bodywork Therapies so essential to Holistic Health? The oldest form of healing , the use of physical touch to express love, provide comfort and relieve pain is as old as human-kind itself.  An instinctive way of showing you care, massage and bodywork have been used in one form or another throughout history.  “Rubbing” as it was called, was mentioned in medical texts from the ancient Chinese as far back as 5,000 years ago. The practice was also widely known in 500 BC by the ancient Greeks, and written about by a famous Roman physician, Galen, in the second century AD.

One of the most influential figures in Massage & Bodywork therapies during the nineteenth century was Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish gymnast.  Ling’s study of the human body allowed him to develop a system of massage strokes for muscles and exercises for healthy joints.  These ‘strokes’ were based on ancient techniques and classified based on their effects.  His work formed the basis of what we now refer to as Swedish Massage.

During the 1960’s and 1970’s, Massage and Bodywork therapies became an important part of a holistic approach to health in the united States.  Personal growth and Wellness Centers began introducing massage as a means to release emotional issues. This began the trend of using massage to restore balance and overall (holistic) health as opposed to just easing sore muscles.  Massage as an essential part of Holistic self-care was later popularized by American Massage Therapist, George Downing, who was an early writer on the subject.

Today, the benefits of massage are well documented and its distinction as the most immediate way to positively affect another’s state of well-being continues.  Benefits of massage include relaxing the subject; reducing pain; and lowering anxiety levels, blood pressure, and even slowing brain cell deterioration. Massage also increases circulation, enhances focus, speeds healing and increases energy. Neuro-chemically, massage releases good feeling hormones which boosts mood and energy.

WIOA is a program that provides comprehensive retraining of the nation’s workforce development programs.   This includes people recently laid off.  It can also include adults over the 18 years of age who qualify as low-income.
