Massage Therapist Training Empowers Natural Healing of Chronic Pain and Inflammation

“Did you know, one of the primary benefits of Massage is its positive affect on inflammation? said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health – Laguna Hills (Healing Hands).  “Our bodies either resist pain, which takes energy, or heals itself. When Massage Therapists apply therapeutic touch, they free up energy and stimulate blood-flow.  When directed toward the area of imbalance, inflammation is reduced and healing occurs”, she added.

As medical studies uncover mounting evidence, Massage’s curative impact on disease is no longer just anecdotal.  We now know that chronic and uncontrolled inflammation greatly contributes to the development of chronic illnesses.  These include cardiovascular disease, asthma and autoimmune deficiencies.

Fortunately, the emotional and physical benefits of massage can substantially impact Inflammation without the negative side-effects of pain medications.   Studies show that even just one hour of massage may decrease heart rate, create a drop in the body’s nerve impulses (relaxation response), reduce anxiety and provide relief from physical pain. Clients also experience a sense of emotional validation as their pain is acknowledged by the Practitioner.

Just as notable, therapeutic touch encourages positive neuro-chemical changes that affect the body and mind.  Most massage modalities cause a release of Oxytocin, Dopamine and Serotonin. These powerful hormones can reduce depressed feelings and enhance mood, making it possible for natural healing to occur.

What Massage Therapists must take into consideration when treating inflammation is that aggressive pressure techniques can exacerbate chronic pain conditions.  That’s why Students are taught multiple modalities and encouraged to remain present and focused on their client throughout the massage session.  By observing their client’s reactions to touch, and encouraging open communication, Students are more consistently able to apply the appropriate pressure for their client’s unique health condition.

Most people think of massageas pushing tissue. However, the masters of the craft know we manipulate tissue to help fibers move freely and to help create a softer gel-like state.

Here are three:

  • Dynamic Cupping: we learn to use suction to lift and pull tissue.
  • Body Reading: we welcome our guest world-renowned Zen Shiatsu practitioner, author and teacher, Seymour Koblin.
  • Chris Morgan and Harmony Curtiss’ Professional Practices course, we refine and hone our academic information to prepare us for the state board exam in Massage Therapy.

Holistic Massage School Spotlights The Benefits of Meditation

“Studies have shown that meditating for just 20 minutes daily is enough to  experience the many benefits Meditation provides” said Harmony Curtiss, Director for Healing Hands School of Holistic Health – Laguna Hills (Healing Hands).  “Thanks to new technologies such as MRIs and EEGs, researchers now know that daily meditation creates positive changes in  our physical bodies and brains.  As Holistic Health Advocates and Professional Massage Therapists, we want everyone to understand that daily Meditation is easy, instantly available, and an essential strategy for holistic self-care,” she added.

meditationThe effects of Meditation have been studied so frequently it has become a growing sub-field of neurological research.  New technologies enable Scientists to measure a variety of immediate and long-term benefits.  Research showed that regardless of the Meditation method used, daily can dramatically enhance one’s quality of life.  Meditation facilitates a sense of calm and balance that benefits overall health.  Studies also found that these benefits are cumulative and continue long after your meditation session has ended.

By clearing away the information overload that contributes to daily stress, Meditation increases self-awareness, and helps one gain a new perspective. It also reduces negative emotions, increases patience and tolerance and helps one develop coping skills for dealing with stress. Daily meditation has also been found to boost imagination, creativity, energy and inspiration.

Meditation has been shown to help people manage chronic symptoms and conditions such as: Insomnia, Anxiety, Depression, Headaches, and Asthma.  Research also suggests that regular meditation can positively impact Cancer, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, lower blood pressure and reduce risk factors of Heart disease.
